There are plenty of restaurants and food stalls along the street. Best bet from my experience is to try the hawker centre (Long Beach) nearby. The plastic chairs and tables might put you off a bit if you’ve not eaten in a similar venue before, but be brave and try it out, a lot of the dishes in there are way better than restaurant food, and for a fraction of the price.
As for shopping, there is the night market along the road outside the hotel, and both the Rasa Sayang and the Holden Sands offer free coaches to George Town and Gurney Plaza several times a day. Both to and from. It’s about a 30 minute drive on an air conditioned coach, so it’s not a bad journey. Gurney plaza and gurney drive are very big shopping malls with mainstream brands (and prices most of the time). George Town has around 3 shopping centres where the coach drops you.
