Castle Durrow is located in the heart of the village. A fully restored, magnificent 300 year old Mansion with luxurious bedrooms each with their own atmosphere. Our restaurant is located in stunning south-facing rooms, decorated with mirrors and hand blocked wallpaper, our head chef creates delicious seasonal menus, popular with visitors and locals alike. We are a terrific place to relax and let romance and Guinness de-stress the mind and body in our cosy bar and reception rooms. In the Magnificent garden, with fabulous scented borders and a walled garden, from where our chefs pick their daily produce, you can stroll around for hours or have a more vigorous walk by the river and in the hills adjoining the castle. A stay at the castle with Dinner and some romance would not be complete without a beauty treatment in our salon , aptly named the Powder box !

We enjoyed a night in the Lady Hannah room and dined in the excellent restaurant at Castle Durrow. The room was one of first floor front facing suites that attracted a slightly higher rate but we felt it was worth it. Everything was superb from the magnificat soup for lunch to the friendliness of the entire staff throughout our stay. We had a blue book package that included dinner but saw that the set menu represented good value for the food quality. The menu appealed to me and i could have selected many items. In the end I had tempura sole and an asian peking duck that was served with wok vegetables and fried rice. Very tasty my husband had a crab spring roll ( not sure about combining it with avocado ) and a perfect steak. Wines were also interesting and fairly priced. We slept well and enjoyed some freshly made pancakes for breakfast along with a selection from the ample buffet. The fresh orange juice and good quality smoked salmon up for particular mention. All in all a most enjoyable experience.

We’ve just returned from my daughter’s wedding at this wonderful hotel. I don’t have enough superlatives to describe how wonderful it was; above and beyond any of our expectations!

From the champagne and breakfast in the bridal suite as we were getting ready, to the beautifully cooked rack of lamb for 135 people for the wedding breakfast, to the building, decorations, the ambience and atmosphere, to the quality of everything we encountered, it was all just sublime!

Nothing was too much trouble for any staff member; the receptionist took my bag upstairs to my room and remembered what my bag looked like when I then moved room.*

The owner, Robin, is really “hands-on” and even worked as a waiter at the wedding breakfast. This meant he could take the children’s food order, answer any questions and make sure everything went to plan. Other owners should take note, it’s a wonderful way to make sure your guests are happy.

I would definitely recommend Castle Durrow as a wedding venue to anyone - just perfect in every way!

* There was nothing wrong with the room, I was changing to spend the night with my grandchildren to give their mum and dad a night off!

Myself and my wife celebrated our wedding Anniversary in Castle Durrow. Check in was prompt at the approx time given at 15.00. We were greeted by a lovely lady at reception, and checked us into the Captain Grant suite. The Castle Manor was built in the 1700's and has amazing features. We were taken back in time to a period of grandure. All newly renovated to a very high standard by the Stoke family.

The bedroom had a feeling of aristocratic and nobility to it. Large celings, four poster bed, large rosewood furinture, Sash windows, preserved timber floors, large black fireplace, Long flowing drapes. Elegant Bathroom with large free standing mirror, bath/shower/Toilet and decorative panelling. Modern LCD Tv, with round table and comfy chairs.

Wonderful mature spacious gardens with an array of pots, flowers, shrubs, plants, trees, and decorative water features all well maintained. The walk is amazing around the grounds. An adventure in itself which leads to a secret garden.

Breakfeast was wonderful with an array of fruits, pastries, cereals, fresh orange juice. Coffee and freshly made hot irish b'feast.

We availed of evening dinner in Coopers restaurant, the staff are all very attentive, friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious, all freshly prepared and we had loads to eat.

We would love to return to Castle Durrow in the Future, thanks to all the Stoke Family & Staff for our wonderful stay.

Paddy & Emily 🥂

"Disappointing Stay at this hotel.
Musty Rooms and Lack of Basic Amenities"

I had a one-night stay at this castle last August and due to unforeseen circumstances did not have a chance to write this review earlier.
To be honest, it was quite a letdown. The room I was initially assigned (one of the garden rooms, not in the castle) was musty and damp, not the fresh and inviting atmosphere I was hoping for. To make matters worse, there was a noticeable stain on the bed and no TV in the room. The rugby World Cup was on and I wanted to watch a match. Staff were not aware, there was no TV in my room. Dust seemed to be everywhere, which made me question the cleanliness of the place.

After expressing my concerns to the bar man he spoke to the receptionist, about the missing TV, I was moved to another room. While it was a slight improvement, it still had that musty and damp smell, along with a generous amount of dust. To add to the disappointment, there was no hot water during my stay, and I was woken up in the early hours of the morning by the banging of pipes behind the wall of my bed

When I brought the lack of hot water to the attention of the receptionist at check out, I barely received an apology, let alone any offer to reduce our bill for the inconvenience caused. This lack of accountability and customer service was disheartening, especially considering that castle Darrow claims to be a reputable establishment.

In conclusion, I cannot recommend this hotel, certainly not a garden room and for the cost of a stay here based on my experience. The musty rooms, stains on the bed, lack of basic amenities like a TV, and overall cleanliness issues were unacceptable. It's disappointing when a hotel falls short of expectations, and the lack of proper response from the staff only added to the frustration. I hope this review serves as constructive feedback for the hotel management to address these issues and improve their services.
One good aspect was the friendly bar man and the food was nice in the restaurant.

Not wheelchair friendly. I attended a wedding with my husband who is a wheelchair user. On arrival I went to get directions for wheelchair access. I met with a member of staff who showed and advised me that this was the wheelchair entrance. Inside was a very deep slope to get to the wedding party upstairs and I had to get assistance from my family. When we were called to the wedding reception downstairs we discovered there were steps so I asked a member of staff who didn’t or couldn’t give me information on how to get down so family members had to lift the wheelchair down and finally a male member of staff came and rudely told us we should have gone outside and around the building to get to the function room and he led us to it and even compared the wheelchair to a wheelbarrow. He seemed to find this amusing that family members were doing their best to avoid any further distress to my husband. Moving on we were appalled at the wheelchair toilet in that function room. The access was through the corridor of the ladies toilet. It was small enough to accommodate a toilet and cistern with one wall grab rail. A folding door which would not accommodate the wheelchair as the absence of rails meant he had to have the wheelchair in front of him to hold on to because of balance issues. The only way he could use the toilet was to arrange for family members to stand in front of him to block the view of ladies going into the ladies bathroom. To top it off there was no hand basin to wash his hands . There was a hand dryer behind the door. The upset and humiliation for my husband was dreadful. He has been in a wheelchair for 22 years and we never experienced such insensitivity by a staff member in any premesis. I had previously cancelled a booking in this hotel as I had asked for an extra lift up grab rail in the bathroom in the bedroom that we had booked and I was advised that no it would be staying as it is .
So to that young man and management maybe you might think of others next time you have a guest with a disability.
Please be honest and say when asked at bookings that facilities are very limited for wheelchair users or better still upgrade the wheelchair facilities and signage and better staff awareness of the needs of people with disability. After all it is 2024. A little kindness shown goes a long way to some of us .

Went for dinner to the restaurant. In a nutshell, the food was very good but the service was way below what one would expect from a restaurant charging 39.50 Euros for just two courses. There is no Maitre’d in the restaurant so the greeting was desultory, there was no wine waiter and the staff had a very imperfect understanding of drinks. So a request for a Bloody Mary was met with “we don’t have that” which I discovered later simply want true. They just wanted to take the order for food. We all ordered monkfish as a main and it was perfectly cooked, the starters were fine. A request for bread was ignored, herbal tea caused consternation but yes, they had fresh mint tea. Except it wasn’t fresh it was peppermint tea in teabags. So overall the service dragged down the overall experience. The place needs much better management and improved training for the waiting staff. Beyond that, the building is magnificent with enormous potential but clearly needs investment to upgrade the furnishings and decorations.

Overall we had a nice stay in Durrow Castle. The dinner & breakfast was delicious & served by very friendly and polite staff. However we had booked a room for three ladies and had requested three beds! When we arrived we got the key to a room with a large four poster & a single bed which meant two people needed to share! When we spoke to Ailish on reception she gave us a family room which consisted of a four poster, bunk beds and a single small bed for a child? This we found very disrespectful as all three of us are over sixty years of age! We felt lack of caring at front desk and we’re not asked when checking out if we enjoyed our stay!

It's said 'One hasn't truly lived until they have loved'.. Well this week as we steered up the driveway to Castle Durrow as guests to a wedding, I couldn't help but wonder with anticipation what beauty this remarkable building would hold within. From the moment we entered we were in awe at the character, high pillars, magnificent stained glass, then the warm and friendly welcoming smile. Having travelled from Donegal we were looking forward to being shown, firstly to our room and then to the restaurant. When the door opened to our suite "Lady Sara" we were even more amazed at the grandeur and beautifully finished design and of course the fabulous 4 poster bed. I can honestly say I can't recall when I last slept as well as I did here!!! The food in the restaurant was exceptional, with such a mouth watering taste that it revived us!! The wedding venue was excellent, plenty of staff attending to every need, and I was delighted to have spoken to some of the staff to gather information on its history. We really enjoyed our stay here so much so we intend coming back. Castle Durrow is truly a remarkable gem, with very friendly and professional staff with such a homely feel you'd forget you were in the centre of an iconic and listed 300 odd year old Castle. Thank you everyone here for making us feel that little bit special, you've certainly won us over. Gary and Sarah Doherty Donegal.

Our bedroom in Castle Durrow was in the Heritage wing, it was large , complete with 4 poster bed and extra single bed. Utterly comfortable .
Everything about Castle Durrow is stylish, but warm and welcoming. The friendly Barman explained how the bar used to be his old school classroom- now it is an elegant bar with soft lighting and great atmosphere.
Dinner was served with friendly efficient service and was excellent. So too breakfast. We completed our stay with a lovely walk in the beautiful gardens.

Terrible experience, stayed in a damp mouldy garden room. The smell in the room as soon as you opened the door was over powering. Mentioned the dampness to the receptionist she just said she'd pass it on. The bed appeared wet it was so damp, and the smell from the bed linen was rotten. The only thing I took away from the hotel was a bad cold. The breakfast was heated in a bambere served with out of date yogurts.

Hi Cliona , We designed Castle Durrow as a place for relaxation , our good food and walks around the gardens , to chill out and spend time with family or friends . Our Powder Box Salon offers very good value massages and facial treatments. We are a part of the loop walks , you can do a 6 km hike from the hotel . Durrow is a very pretty small village and Kilkenny City is 25 minutes away . I hope you will come and experience the Castle and love it like we do , Shell

Oh my goodness I never saw your question!! At this moment I am not yet , however I am working on it! I love dogs, I am just not sure how to go about making the hotel dog friendly. It is a difficult one as dogs are not allowed where food is being served. I will post on FB as soon as I am dog friendly!!!!

Hi Bernard , Are you attending a wedding with us ? They roseyard rooms are really lovely . They are not in the main structure of the house , but you don't have to go outside as they are connected . If you come here in spring and summer , just outside is the most beautiful rose filled courtyard ! The rooms are close to the banqueting room . I hope you will come and stay with us , Kindest Regards, Shelly

Hi , You can always explore the gardens on your own . During the week our gardeners are there from 8-5 and they'll always make time to chat to our guests . Or you can ask if Bart can meet up with you. I'm looking forward to welcome you to the castle. If you come at the weekend I would be delighted to show you the gardens myself if I'm around ! Kindest Regards, Shelly
