I recently returned from a birding trip arranged by Cheepers, Birding on a Budget. We had a group of 10 total people which included Cindy and Jim Beckman, the owners of the company. Cindy and Jim have known Janet and Glenn Lee for a number of years. The Lees own and operate Cielito Sur Bed and Breakfast Inn located in Bambito, Panama. Our group was small so Cindy and Jim could book the whole lodge for us. Each room has different decorations. Each is decorated with items from the various native tribes of Panama. Our room had 3 single beds plus a kitchenette and was decorated with clothing from the Ngobe-Bugle people. Other rooms had baskets or artwork from their various tribes. Our room was spacious with a wardrobe, small table and chairs and easy chair. The shower was adequate with plenty of hot water. Cielito Sur uses reverse osmosis to purify the water so it is safe to drink. The property is a bird refuge with many colors of hibiscus and bird friendly plants. There are hummingbird feeders and fruit platform feeders throughout. A female scintillant hummingbird has a nest in the ficus plant located in the patio common are. There is a large common area with wi-fi, board games, books and maps for guests to use. Each day we had the choice of a continental style breakfast or a delicious dish cooked up per order. The food and coffee are a great start for the day. If you enjoy a small family run business with all the comforts of home the Cielito Sur should be your place to stay.

We enjoyed our stay at Cielito Sur. The room was clean with a comfortable bed and considerate touches such as a bathtub, kichenette, easy chair, and hooks to hang gear. The grounds reflects many years of cultivation with 50 types of hibiscus, a working garden, coffee plants, and chickens which contribute to tasty breakfasts which varied each day. Trails go up the forested hillside along a small stream. Busy birdfeeders provided entertainment with our morning coffee. Glen, Janet, Sean and Amanda are charming hosts knowledgeable about local attractions, wildlife, culture and history.

Owners Glenn and Janet were GREAT!!! Beautiful property with trails and bird feeders. Glenn and Janet were so helpful arranging bird guides and transportation. The breakfasts were delicious. Rooms were very comfortable - we loved it. We spent our days birding nearby. If we had more time, we would have gone to nearby Guadalupe. We would definitely come back!!

My wife and I enjoyed an abbreviated trip the the Chiriqui Highlands during April and were lucky enough to call "Cielito Sur Bed and Breakfast" our home away from home. This wonderful B & B has everything you need for a relaxing stay in the cool mountains of the Volcan region of Panama. Cielito Sur is situated on approximately 7 acres of beautiful forested land with informal gardens and landscaping surrounding the Hostal.
The owners, Glenn and Janet Lee have done a magnificent job creating a perfectly tranquil setting in which you may truly relax and enjoy your stay. The Hostal consists of four rooms, each named after an indigenous Iindian tribe and each with it's own unique decorations. We stayed in the Teribe and found it to be CLEAN, comfortable and large enough for the two of us. The room had a King sized bed, desk and chair, couch, lounge chair, dresser, table and night stand yet still felt uncluttered and roomy. Centrally located between the four rooms is a very nice common living room complete with a small library, fireplace, TV, VCR, DVD player and a computer on which you may check your email. There are a ton of movies available on DVD and quite a selection of music CD's as well. Outside of the Living room you will find a very large and accommodating covered porch with high ceilings which allow for an unobstructed view of the beautiful forest behind the Hostal. Birds of many varieties frequent the grounds and hummingbirds abound; their swooping and chatter can be observed almost anywhere on the estate. In the morning Janet cooks up a varied menu which includes fresh fruits, juices, breads and cereals as well as a couple of choices of delightful hearty fare, i.e., egg dishes, pancakes or waffles (depending on the day). Much of the produce, fruit and eggs served, are grown on the estate. Glenn also grows, processes and roasts the coffee which is served for breakfast and you may purchase coffee to take home with you. Delicious!
Both Glenn and Janet are consummate hosts and a couple of the nicest people you will ever have the pleasure to meet. They can provide you with information about the area including enjoyable places to hike, bird and sight-see as well as various restaurants and shops nearby. All in all and without reservation my wife and I highly recommend the Hostal Cielito Sur as a fantastic place to call home when you are in the beautiful highlands of Panama.

Cielito Sur Bed and Breakfast is fabulous -- beautiful, spotlessly clean, well run, wonderful attentive hosts (with perfect English), every convenience (including having your personal laundry washed and folded for a very nominal charge), a wonderful living room with a fireplace, tons of movies and a free computer to check your email. Virtually nothing (except the nominal charge for laundry) was extra. The breakfast was the best in Panama – with lots of choices. The gardens are wonderful and there are birds everywhere – including many different kinds of hummingbirds.
The area is beautiful. We were there several days and never ran out of activities. We saw a beautiful horse farm, a coffee plantation, an orchid farm and hiked in the Friendship International Park (Las Amistad National Park). There is more than one spa in the area and white river rafting. Staying busy everyday is no problem, but just sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine admiring the view is very relaxing.
Glen and Jan (your hosts) have been in the area many years and can guide you.
This place deserves every star and more.

Located on the road that connects Volcan to Cerro Punta and follows the Viejo river, the Celito Sur B&B is a treasure. Glenn and Janet Lee are wonderful hosts who have built a four room B&B on property owned by Janet's family for over 50 years.
This area, often called Little Switzerland, is a major farming area of Panama. The mountain slopes are planted and grazed, and I was astounded by how, they being so steep, they could be cultivated.
The accomodations are "A" One. A central living room off a veranda is flanked on each side by two bed rooms which also are entered from the veranda. The view from this porch is of the property's gardens and stream and extends up the mountainside behind. The rooms are large, and the shared living room is spectacular. It has a fireplace which we made use of on a cool evening, a TV that is used to view a wouderful collection of movies, a small library, and a free computer to catch up with email and the outside world.
We were very comfortable inside while it rained on the first day and one half of our visit, but enjoyed the porch for a glass of wine in the late afternoon before venturing out for dinner.
Celito Sur provides breakfast only, but that is worth arising for. Coffee, juice, fruit, rolls, and cheese are set out to start on before enjoying a selection of main courses (vegitarian fare included) all while being amazed by the variety of hummingbirds that gather at several of the feeders located right outside the windows. It is feast not famine.
Would We return? In a heart beat. We look forward to visiting Glenn and Janet in 2007.
The Kellys

Janet and Glenn Lee, owners and operators of Cielito Sur B & B, are the perfect hosts in a perfect little piece of paradise. Their home and accommodations are warm, comforting and relaxing; their breakfasts are creative, filling and scrumptious; their knowledge of the country, the wildlife (especially the birds) and their willingness to share are second to none; their property, with it's diversity of habitats and hummingbird feeders can keep birders and non-birders entertained for days. We stayed 6 nights and we wish we were still there. Believe me, we will be back again.

What can I say about this wonderful, family-run B&B? This was my first time visiting Panama and all I can say is that they made me feel as if we were part of the family.  First off, our party of four was greeted by the proprietors: Glenn, Janet and, their son, Shawn Lee.

My mother and I were shown to the Woonan-Embera Room, named after one of the Indian tribes found in Panama. Our room included a kitchenette and is decorated by local Indian arts and crafts particular to this tribe. The room was quite airy, roomy and comfortable. We slept like babes in the King size bed. We did not require any alarms to wake us in the morning as the birds promptly started chirping and doing their morning rituals to gently wake us. Every evening, when we went back to our room, the bed was crisply made and the housekeeper always left us a little surprise on our pillows (hibiscus flower picked from the garden with a little chocolate hidden away in the leaves).

The remaining two members in our party had reserved the Casita Margarita, which is a self-catered independent house.  This little house has two bedrooms, one bathroom, a beautiful working fireplace, and a wonderful kitchen. The Casita is airy, well-lit with lots of natural lighting, and quite spacious. House cleaning is not included with the Casita, however, Glenn and Shawn made sure that we were fully equipped. Shawn had also ensured that the satellite was up and running in the Casita and we were not only able to watch some television in Spanish but also able to catch some English stations as well.

Overall, all of us were quite content with our accommodations.

The estate in itself is just beautiful. There’s lots of work to do around the estate, but as a guest, all you see is the well-maintained, lush greenery. The Hibiscus flowers, orchids, many various fruit trees, bamboo and coffee plants could be found on the estate. In exploring the grounds, we came across Janet’s birds (parrots, lovebirds and quails) and her wonderful garden filled with lettuce, berries, chives, herbs, tomatoes, strawberries, etc.

The gardener lives on the estate and you can see that he really takes pride in his work. Everything is very well maintained and all the plants are well taken care of. The landscaping is just breath-taking. There’s at least 4 natural springs running through the property. If you are looking for a bit of solitude, but do not want to venture too far, there are little hidden alcoves on the property, with a little bench, that you can just go and sit hidden in the trees and listen to the birds chirp and the little waterfall that’s on the property. Follow the paths and you will see the natural spring and nature at her best.  If not there is a common room where guests can converge, watch an array of movies, books and access to a computer, although there is WiFi available around the living quarters. There is also the beautiful porch just in front of the common room with some rocking chairs that permits you to sit and relax all the while you can watch the hummingbirds zip past you to go to the feeders.

The B&B is a fenced-in property which has its own private gate whereby we could access to park our vehicle on the premises. In addition, there is the neighborhood watch BUT I must say that all of the locals were quite friendly and helpful. We also took the local bus, which comes every 15minutes and stops right in front of the property, to go into town.

If you are looking for Janet, here’s a hint… look for the chihuahuas. They are always following Janet around the premises. If not, you can always find Janet in the kitchen every morning, as she takes on the role of breakfast chef. Shawn acts as the sous-chef, while Glenn is in the dining area entertaining the guests with some interesting stories and answering our numerous questions. Glenn really has a wonderful sense of humor! So you start your day off on the right foot. If you have a question about the local fruits, things to do, or the birds, there’s a book close by that he could either show the picture or he’s opening one of the many books stored in his memory. Let’s just say he’s quite knowledgeable. He will make suggestions and give you ideas about places to visit during your stay. Finca Dracula is a popular suggestion if you love orchids.  If you are lucky, you might be able to get Glenn to show you how he processes his home grown coffee and then you can compare by doing the Janson’s Coffee farm tour which provides history and adds a whole different perspective for the coffee lovers who are interested in the processing of coffee. After a week in the area, all I can say is the Lee family has a well established reputation in the area and is very well respected!

Back to breakfast now!!! I just love my breakfast in the mornings! Janet offers 2 choices and you do not eat the same thing twice while you are there. Most of the supplies for breakfast come straight from the estate. You are offered two choices of freshly squeezed exotic fruit juices, 4 different types of cheeses, an assortment of homemade bread, a selection of fresh fruits, homemade jams, cereals. For the main meal, Janet had served fresh eggs loaded with herbs from her garden. If you are lucky to have the opportunity to eat her baked French toast, it’s to die for!!! My mouth is still watering just at the thought of that French toast….While your taste buds and senses are enjoying the meal, you can listen to the conversations going around the room or just enjoy the hummingbirds that are fluttering about just in front of your eyes. Did I mention that there are a lot of humming birds? For the avid bird watcher, there are at least 10+ species that are known to be on the estate.

The whole family was just so sweet and friendly. They found out it was my birthday and they just went out of their way to get a cake and celebrate with me.They will accommodate you in any way they can to make your stay memorable and enjoyable. Even the dogs are quite friendly. Don’t worry they do not disturb you. They go about their merry way but they do look forward to you saying “hello”.

All in all, you cannot go wrong with your decision to stay at Ceilito Sur B&B Inn. All in our party were extremely happy and the reception and service received by all on the estate was just exceptional!! I will definitely go back again!

Cielito Sur is a lovely place with sparkling streams, lovely flowers, fruit trees and beautiful birds flitting about everywhere. My husband and I are birders and at Cielito Sur we truly found a small heaven of birds. We stayed at the self-catering Casita for 2 weeks and we enjoyed the peace and quiet of our stay. We suspect that we would have enjoyed staying in any of the other rooms as well with the daily breakfasts provided. The hosts, Janet and Glenn, bird enthusiasts themselves, are most attentive and friendly with helpful advice and information. They grow their own coffee and gather fresh eggs daily from the hen house. We felt very welcome and it was like visiting family. We look forward to staying there again in the future..

Spaciously roomed B&B with good common areas located in pretty gardens. Good breakfast with many hummingbirds outside windows. Can be cold at night although heaters are provided. However, it is overpriced in our view and the pillows could with renewing. A car is essential.
