How much more you want if you stay at a paradise- like caribean tiny little island, at a place, far away from crowds, loud noises and civilization?? This is Dereks Place on Little Corn Island! I was there when the world shut down for the second time in the Corona crisis. Ana and Derek, the hosts, and their two children treated me like a member of their family! So sweet and warmhearted welcoming! The huts are so beautiful, Robinson-styled, very clean and creative. The food they cook (every night cooked another family member) is just super delicious. And they produce their own gasoline and diesel made of plastic garbage. And the best part was, that I got certified as a PADI-diver with Dana Rae Castoro, a great, passionate and amazing dive instructor! She has just such good and positive vibes that you feel comfortable and trustful with her from the first moment on! I highly recommend her if you want to learn to dive or just to go out to dive and explore. She takes you through the course with good knowledge, a radiant smile and good vibrations! After the course I continued diving with her, even an incredible night dive! Thanks so much for everything, Ana, Derek and Dana, I certainly will be back soon!

Stayed here for 4 nights and loved it! It’s secluded in a jungle right beside the beach and an easy walk to town or around the island to some other amazing spots. Bungalows are cozy and unique and the hosts were friendly, had great food and were super environmentally conscious. Also did my scuba diver certification last minute and had a great experience at their dive shop, instructor Alejandro was friendly, helpful and super awesome for my first time diving. Highly recommend the place !

We were a group of 13 people, adults and kids, traveling to Little Corn. We ranged in age from 8-74, and everyone was stunned at the experience. Anna greeted us on arrival and was the most hospitable host. We stayed in 4 of the five cabins, each one unique, and immaculately clean. We had such an amazing time we stayed an extra night. The food was served family style and delicious; the location, the most beautiful. The village is a 25ish minute walk. The experience alone was enough to entice us to return again another time.

ALERT
I was walking around Corn Island and they recommended this diving center to me. From the day before, they coordinated to do the dive, telling me that there was only one place available. When I arrived at the island I made the deposit payment at 10:16 am to diving at 1pm, they themselves recommended a water taxi, which at first charged a price and since according to him there was a misunderstanding, he charged me 10 times more going and 10 times more returning. This happened with one hour left for the dive, I reported this situation to the diving company and their response was that there is no refund.
Be CAREFUL so you don't keep repeating the same thing.

We had breakfast twice. Comfortable and remarkably clean place with a beautiful view out to sea. The dining room is particularly bright for a traditional construction. I particularly enjoyed the granola with fresh fruit.

Derek and Anna were great hosts and very helpful. We loved their huts and the great little extra touches. The food was very good as well. The hammocks and the nice breeze made it a great place relax and read your book. We also did a dive there and it was beautiful!

We spent a fair share of time researching places to stay on Little Corn and made the decision on Derek's Place. We booked the Bottle House as we are a family of four. Our kids are 8 and 10 and were really looking forward to our holiday.
We took the 10am panga from Big Corn and when we arrived at the dock on Little Corn there was someone waiting with a wheel barrow for our luggage. There were two other couples as well and the walk was horrendous it was more then a 20 minute walk and I've never been covered in as much mud as that day. People were slipping and falling in the mud, it was horrible.
When we finally got there we were shown our cabana by Anna and was informed not to put anything in the safe attached to the back of the door as any key worked in it and one if her cleaning staff had stolen the previous day. She said she dealt with it, but still not to put anything in there. I asked her about getting something to eat as my husband is diabetic and she sounded annoyed and said that there maybe some granola and yogurt, but lunch was being prepared. I must admit lunch was good but do agree with a couple of the other write ups that the meals were over priced. As for dinner they serve it at 8pm??? I'm sorry but like I said my husband is diabetic and we have kids who are in bed at that time, I can't eat a meal at 8pm myself. Turns out that our kids weren't even allowed to eat with us they had to eat with Derek and Anna's kids and were feed Mac n cheese my kids said was kraft dinner which they don't even eat at home.
We got up early and attempted to walk into town along the beach but only got maybe a quarter of the way by beach then had to go back up to the trail. Once in town we realized how much was actually in town food wise and accommodation wise for a fraction of what the food and accommodations where at Dereks so after a good breakfast at The Shack By The Sea great pancakes and French toast made from coconut bread we made the trek back to Derek's packed up our stuff went and squared away for our food and drinks for the one day. Anna seemed annoyed but they got our money for ten nights and we only stayed one. We just wanted out, we ended up getting a room at Los Delphine's hotel right in town and found some great deals at restaurants for meals. Rosas for breakfast 3.00 US dollars for a full breakfast including coffee or tea and fruit.
Take our advice along with the other reviews to stay away. The locals on the island are super friendly. Derek and Anna are not locals and don't make you feel welcome at all and you have no say in anything it's their way or no way. Don't do it it's your vacation not theirs! If you do want seclusion you can walk to any beach on the island you don't need to be under someone else's rules for your holiday.

Really mixed feelings about this place, but ultimately would not recommend it.
The bungalows are adorable, loved the rustic charm, location is super with a cool onshore breeze, the food is fine, not fabulous but fine. Missy, the dive instructor, is terrific.
Honestly the only problem with this place are the hosts. Specifically Anna, who is simply not hospitable.
Classic scenario:
Me: "Hi Anna, the bulbs are out in our bungalow, would you mind replacing them? No rush".
Anna: "You have to talk to Derek. That's his department".
My favorite example was the day they refused to feed us because we had forgotten to order lunch and there "was not enough food".
We had just spent the morning diving with their instructor (who is fabulous). We came off the water after four hours, tired and hungry, to be told that we should have ordered in advance and there was not enough food.
We offered to eat whatever was available, leftovers, a sandwich, anything.... The other guests, already gathered for lunch, were embarrassed and startled as Anna reacted with completed indignation and stormed away from the table, "how can you put me in this position?".
The server in the kitchen refused to give us plates to eat leftovers and we had to walk 20 minutes to the village at 2pm to get some lunch.
And this with a child? I was traveling with my 13 year old son. We were staying for six nights, and both of us were taking dive courses, ie good guests to have.
Some other classic moments were when we saw fresh milk being delivered (a rarity on the island) and I asked if my son could have a glass. He had been five days without fresh milk and was very excited at the prospect. "No, I need it all to make the cheese" was the reply.
Next day, Anna was eating the homemade cheese at breakfast. "How did the cheese work out?", I asked, knowing it was her first time to make it. "You can't have any. It's just for us. I can not give it to everybody". I am not kidding. That's verbatim.
Honestly, we are laughing now and even at the time, because it was so comical. "No, there is not enough food!!@#$" my son would mimic Anna. But really, this is no way to treat guests.
My son initially described staying there as being like house guests, because you had to fend for yourself and not expect to be waited on. But later he revised his opinion, "If we were house guests, they would give us plates to eat leftovers."

We immediately felt misled by all the positive reviews upon arrival. We'd read a lot about Little Corn and excitedly booked the two story house (which is really a one story house with a sweltering attic where people hit their heads on the low ceilings and lie in their beds awake) at Derek's place for a few nights. The walk is as advertised—a long way from most of what's on the island. The little beach there is nice. But basically nothing else was as the other reviews suggested. Maybe this place is good for diving? We heard it had the least expensive dive set-up on the island. We didn't stay to find out.
Anyway, to flesh out our experience: When we arrived, Anna hurriedly showed us the house, the lengthiest part of our welcome being a demonstration of the tedious door-barring security system and an admonition to hide our valuables, because otherwise someone would see them and break in and steal them. She also told us to open the upstairs windows, which would help with the bugs at night. Additionally, she told us that many of the lights were out, but she'd send Derek back to fix them (why this hadn't been done before we arrived was a mystery.) We unpacked and waited for the communal dinner at eight, since we didn't want to hike back to town in the dark and we were tired from the day of traveling. Derek eventually came by and fixed some but not all of the lights. We took "showers"—which involved scooping harvested rainwater from a bucket over our heads with a bowl.
At about 7:30 we went over to the "living room," which is a covered area by the kitchen. Derek was on his computer. His parents were visiting, on their computer and reading. His brother was there, too, sleeping in a hammock. We had brought books with us but expected some kind of greeting, or invitation to have some water or buy a beer, or anything in the way of salutation. No such thing was forthcoming. Eventually we just sat down and read. After a little while I stood up and asked Anna about water. She pointed to a cooler in the corner. Then I asked about other drinks. She explained how all that worked as if the question were an annoyance.
The communal dinner was awkward and far too expensively priced for what it was. We retreated to our accommodations and suffered, sweating on the old spring-loaded bed, bugs swirling around our inadequate mosquito net set-up for a number of fitful hours. We made it through just one night before having a difficult conversation with Anna about our unpleasant experience, at the conclusion of which she required us to pay for all three nights although we were only going to stay for one—my wife had made up her mind that we would leave the island if Derek's was the only place available to stay.
In any case, I'm not inclined to write negative reviews, but based on our night's experience, I really couldn't recommend this place to anyone. Your money will be better and more pleasantly spent at Little Corn Beach and Bungalow or Casa Iguana, in my opinion.

Derek's Place was recommended to us by a friend. As far as location it is a lovely, rustic place. The grounds and huts were very pretty. While we were there it was fairly breezy (end of Feb) so the huts were cool and shady and we didn't miss a fan.
There were a couple of issues however. First of all, without a kitchen and a good 20 minute walk from the restaurants you don't have much freedom for food. The food Derek and his wife prepared was good but you had to eat it at the times they served it, you also had to share it with several other hungry guests. There was a VERY LONG stretch in between breakfast lunch and dinner. I was always starving. Also the food was just way way too expensive for people staying there relying on it. There was nowhere for guests to store food and drinks (unless you want to pay to use their fridge which is ridiculous) so you had to BUY everything from Derek and Ana and it is NOT cheap including glasses and lemons! Furthermore the owners and the staff all seemed annoyed any time you asked them for anything even things you were buying! I did not feel welcome there at all. I dreaded asking for anything. I felt like my whole vacation had to revolve around the life the owners, if they were busy and no around tough luck! The SCUBA instructor seemed nice though.
Also be prepared if you want to pay your balance while there that they demanded cash as there is not an ATM on the island and it was more convenient for them. This was a problem as we had to spend an entire day of our vacation taking a crappy panga ride to and from Big Corn Island to get them $100s of dollars in cash because they didn't want to go themselves.
All in all we spent as much time away from where we were staying as possible as the rest of the island was far friendlier. There is not a very nice beach in front of the place as it's very rocky. Walking down the beach a bit further places like Peace and Ensuenos looked much nicer and were flanking the nicer bits of beach with reefs right out front.

There is a communal bucket shower, which is a big barrel and you have a bucket to scoop the water out and over you. Our kids thought it was really neat. You do get towels in your cabana. We stayed in the Bottle House which has its own private bucket shower and the Beach House has it's own private one as well.
