Stayed here for 5 nights with my husband. It was exactly what we wanted from our Corn Islands trip, it is in the middle of nowhere, very basic, quiet & beautiful. The owner Mathew & his family are lovely and cook really good & well priced meals for you there if you ask. He also rents snorkelling equipment. The property is only 1 minute walk from one of the islands prettiest beaches & good snorkelling spot.

The only down point for us which is not the property's fault at all but I think worth noting is that the property is a good 20 minute walk from the town and this is down a dirt track. This was ok for our first few days but following a days heavy rain (which I believe is not too uncommon on the Corn Islands) the path became a mud bath, the mud was well over our ankles in several places! Trying to walk 20 minutes in this, slipping & sliding around on your way to town for a nice dinner in an evening is not exactly ideal. The dirt track obviously has no lights so it is a 20minute walk by torch light some of which is through forest area which was ok with my husband but on my own I would have found quite spooky.

As long as you don't mind the above this is perfect. We really enjoyed our stay.

Really impressed with the owners of this facility. They have slowly carved paradise out of the jungle. It has become a bi annual trip for me so I have noticed the hard work being done too.
Best beach on the island, nice and quite and away from the noise of the marina but still within close walking distance.

From the flight to Big Corn from Managua, followed by a panga boat to Little Corn I could tell this trip was going to be a memorable adventure. Making my way through the 'downtown' and across the baseball field I found my way to Dobedo. The place was a little rustic paradise set on the quiet side of the island. When I arrived the owner was pumping fresh water from the well and assured me there were no worries about drinking the water. I was given a quick snapshot of what to expect and do while visiting the island and then made my way down to the beach where I spent a good chunk of my time. The beach was surprisingly private and the reefs made for unbelievable snorkeling. Walks around the island and into town for some nightlife always made me appreciate the walk back to my quiet room. I left with feeling that I had made some really good new friends and look forward to getting back there again soon.

I’m basing my 3 star review on an average of two things: 4.5 stars for the grounds and staff and 2 stars for the Zendo Cabana specifically. I’ll elaborate on these. The grounds for Dobedo is clean. Debris was raked and the grass was maintained short. The kitchen was basic, but a nice edition for for boiling water for coffee etc. There were 2 basic cooler so you had an option to store things, but they also allowed us to keep our beers in their personal fridge. That being said the staff there is awesome! They are 5 stars! The owners weren’t there during our stay, but the owner’s brother-in-law and other family and friends were there managing the place. They were super helpful, friendly, and chill. Anything you needed or asked, they were there to help. They were the best part of Dobedo after we had stayed a couple nights at Elsa’s Place on the eastside and the staff was completely indifferent and basically looked like they hated life.

Now on to the Zendo Cabana. We only chose this cabana because it was all they had left for the dates we wanted and according to the website it listed specifically private outdoor bathroom and hammocks. We stayed in 2 other areas on Little Corn and wanted to see what it was like on the north end. When we saw private outdoor bathroom we assumed it was right next to the cabana and everything was private: toilet, shower, sink. Well that is not the case. First of all the outdoor bathroom is about 50-60 away, which isn’t really that far, but annoying when it’s raining and you have to use the toilet in the middle of the night. The only thing that is private was the toilet, which seemed strange. The shower and sink were communal. There were 2 communal showers, but only one had a shower head, so everyone was using that one shower. Also at the time, the little drain hole appeared to not drain fast enough or was clogged because all the grey water from showering was flowing out the shower entrance and basically pooling around the shower building which was kind of gross since it’s various people’s grey water just pooling in the grass. As for the Zendo Cabana it self. The website describes it as “Revel in our largest cabina/meditation space. Pura Nicaraguense, honed with a machete, on the outside. Pure Japanese, with Tatami mats, on the inside.” This place is absolutely not a meditation space and there is nothing Japanese about it. The staw mats on the floor and walls appeared to only be there to cover up the gaps in the wooden boards and are likely not cleaned often. Also the spare bed, even though we didn’t use it, in Zendo had no sheets on it and it was dirty with random dirt, leaves, debris. In the simplest language, Zendo Cabana was ghetto for what it cost. I bet the other building were nicer on the inside as some friends we made were in the bigger 2 floor cabana looked like they had actual newer walls and never felt gross out staying there. I think Zendo cabin is old and shows it and maybe they need to do a bit remodeling on that one. Basically what I’m trying to say is their website needs to be updated badly. It says there is free WiFi, there is not! The description for Zendo was completely misleading. I feel like the website should be more specific and realistic about the ‘private outdoor bathroom’.

Response from Dobedos, Manager at Dobedo
Responded 1 Feb 2018
Hola Lala. I am happy to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us and that you nada good experience with our staff. I apologize that I wasn't there to tend to you personally. While I must also apologize for the state of the Zendo when you stayed there (We were waiting on materials to seal the gap between walls and roof so Nancita leaves couldn't blow in (i.e.. dirt/debris you describe) on windy days), I can assure you that the description/photos of the Zendo on the website are apt. It is our most rustic and largest cabina, purposely made in a Campesino Nicaraguense style with siding shaped by machete and set into place. The Tatami matting and Bamboo shell lamp also connote a Japanese aesthetic as the hundreds who have stayed and meditated here would attest to. Most would acknowledge that the two Queen size beds (4 person capacity) for a rate of $50/night or $12.50 each is of exemplary value and taste. I regret however that the Wifi was down in the Stormy season that you were here and also the shower issuer you experienced with one shower head broken and the drain clogged. Unfortunately I was not there to perform the necessary maintenance. The issue has now been resolved as has the repair of the Zendo and we would love to have you back in the future to offer you an improved experience. Gracias

Little Corn Island is very nice and the location of Dobedo is nice too BUT... it's first of all to far away from the village. There's nothing to do here. OK you can go to the beach off course and it's really nice, but if it's raining or has rained, then you have a problem. The path from the village to Dobedo is very muddy and slippery. There's no other way you can go to the village then taking this path. When it's dark you really don't want to walk here because it will take you 30 minutes to get to the village where you can eat, drink, dive or having a party.

If this was the only bad thing I would consider to go here BUT the biggest reason I will not recommend this place is the owner. We have some very bad experience with him. If you book on Booking.com he will send you an email that you have to pay in advance for your entire stay or for a few days. Normally it's not like that if you book by Booking.com but I really wanted to go to Little Corn Island so I paid the first 3 days and we wanted to stay for 6 days.

The evening we arrived there was a man at the small harbour to pick us up. He had a sign with our names on it and from two others guests. We followed him with our heavy backpacks and other stuff into this muddy jungle for 45 minutes. The whole path to Dobedo there are signs in the trees how to get to Dobedo. The other guests who came with us did a reservation by Booking.com and he didn't had a room for them because they didn't paid in advance. The guy who lead us to Dobedo "asked" all of us $10,- each to lead us to Dobedo. I really didn't felt right because there were six of us so he wanted $60,- for a walk to Dobedo that we could do all by ourselves and we had to carry our luggage too. I didn't paid for it because I went to the owner and he told me it's normal that they charge this. I said I didn't had any money on me because it was ridiculous to pay so much. He said that I will fixed this for us later.

After diner we went to bed because I felt sick and tired. There are cabins where you can sleep. It's really easy to see from the outside if the lights are on or off. I told the owner that we are going to sleep. When I was sleeping for almost 30 minutes I heard someone yelling my name outside the cabin. It was the owner! I said to him that I was sleeping. He told me he had my passport and if I can go with him to his office. So I dressed up and went to his office. In his office he said that he want me to pay for the entire stay. I didn't want to do that at that time because I didn't could see how Dobedo looks because it was already dark when we arrived. I said to him that I already paid for 3 days and that I will come back to him the next day.

When we arrive the owner told us that we had a private shower and toilet outside. Well after 2 days we discovered that everybody on Dobedo used our "private" shower and toilet because they didn't clean it. He told us to close the door with the key, so we did. Later that day I wanted to go to the toilet and the door was open. I asked the other guest about their "private" toilet and shower and they told me that they had the same "private" toilet and shower that we used. There was even one day that we saw his children were playing in our toilet.

The owner lives on Dobedo with his wife and children. Of course that's no problem at all but during the day and evening the play really loud music all the time. You can hear this music in your cabin just as hard as outside. Some guests had to ask him and his children to turn off the music because they couldn't relaxed! I even recorded this music when I was in my cabin because it was really unbelievable!

We left after 3 days because storm was coming and that's not something rare on the Corn Islands. We wanted catch our plain that left a few days later. And if there is storm there are no boats going from Little Corn Island to Big Corn Island. So we told the owner that we wanted to leave a day before we left. He was not amused and he wanted us to pay for the other days. We told him that nowhere we've been in Nicaragua, Indonesia, Sri Lanka etc that we have to pay for days that we didn't stay. It was a long discussion but at the end we didn't paid for it but the other guests did unfortunately for them.

The day we left we only had to pay for the dinner we had the first day. He and his wife weren't there so his son helped us. The owner made a bill for two lobsters $15,- each what is OK but my girlfriend didn't had lobster because she's a vegetarian. His son tried to call his father but he could reach him. We heard later that he went to Big Corn Island with his wife the day before. So he left the guests with his children. Finally his son could reach his father and we had a discussion about this too.

It's not about to money but the way he's doing his business. I think it not fair if you are advertising on Booking.com and make you own rules for booking. I think it's also not fair to charge people the first moment when they just arrived and you know that people can't leave the island when storm is coming and they want to leave earlier.

I really would recommend you to go somewhere in the village and go to beach at Yemaya!

Response from Dobedos, Owner at Dobedo
Responded 7 Feb 2017
For most, Dobedo is a destination, next to the nicest beach on the island and rather than paying $400/night that one shells out for Yemaya next door, guests are well accommodated here for $40/night. Depending on the Season and Weather, things that are out of my control, the Path can be muddy, and yes, One must decide on which they would rather- the Peace and Tranquility of the Northern beach or the hustle and bustle of the Village. We do have a Restaurant on site as well as amusements like Billiards, Foosball, Volleyball, and Cards as well as the obvious Snorkelling, Fishing, Swimming, Reading, and relaxing on our beach so there are "Things to do" here. And Yes, Chamberos expect to get paid for bringing you to us and carrying your bags, which Donovan did. This is the same for any Hotel on the island and I in turn had to pay your portion. Check-in, Entitlement, and A Skewed Sense of Reality After dinner, I asked if I could sign you in and you gave me your passport and told me you would be back in a minute. After a time, when I saw that you had gone to your room, I came to inform you that you had left your passport with me. There was no "yelling" and most people don't like having their passports out of their possession. Like any hotel, I asked you to pay for your reservation upon check-in to which you told me you were feeling sick and could you do it in the morning. There was no talk of deposit or wanting to see the place first. Upon waking the next day and the day after that, you disappeared most of the time, evading me and telling me you would settle up later. When I was finally able to talk with you (48 hours after arrival), you informed me that you would be leaving and that you and your girlfriend had paid your deposit for the 3 nights you stayed. I explained that the possible storm was not coming for 2-3 days but even then there would be a freight boat (the same one you arrived on) going back to the Big Island. I said that if they wanted to leave 3 days early, even though I'm not responsible for the Weather or muddy trails due to it, that perhaps we could find a compromise. Other guests would have reserved in their place, and we could split the cost of those three nights. When I said that normally guests pay for their entire stay upon arrival and that I'd been trying to check them in for 2 days, they informed me that "no Hotel in the world had ever charged them for their room upon arrival" and that they'd left several places early and without notice. Really! Not in mine or Dear reader's experience. Your girlfriend told me "That's Travelling!" So, "That's Travelling" means that the places you blow through must suffer through your unwillingness to pay. "That's Travelling" when you leave a mess for the next guests in the communal kitchen you used every day. "That's Travelling" when after being requested to wash your feet when coming from the beach or town that you blatantly disregard this and tramp mud into your room or shower. "That's Travelling" when you leave your bathroom door open to get dirty even though you've been asked to lock it. Every cabina has a private toilet inside except yours which had a private toilet outside and my children were never in it. In fact, everyday I locked your toilet for you as, like with everything else, you chose to ignore me. "That"s Travelling" when you dislike the music, culture, and children of the places you visit so you spend all your time with other "travelers" of the same ilk and colour as evident through the hateful attitude and disregard shown to my wife and children. THAT and THESE things are NOT Travelling. They are disrespectful, ethnocentric, and the irresponsible, childish actions that give Tourists a bad reputation. Lastly, you comment upon a Booking site that you didn't even book through. We request a deposit, as allowed through Booking.com's policies, as we've had other guests like you, without conscience, who have neglected to honor their reservation and have simply chosen to not show up, thus leaving us with empty rooms and lost income. The "Other Guests" you refer to as we not having room for, you neglect to mention that we did in fact accomodate them, by moving our family (with 5 children at 9pm) out of the Casa Grande and sleeping in the kitchen and storage rooms. Though you neglect to mention it, anyone can see these "other guests" review and what they had to say about the experience on Trip Advisor- jvilcius "Best Beach Hands Down!" Please in future travels, try and tread a little more gently on the earth...

Beautiful place, incredible family who runs it! Our reservation got messed up, and they bent over backwards to make sure we got looked after.

Great food, great accomodation! The beach is simply spectacular!

Here's the catch: it's a 45 minute hike through the jungle to get there. If you take the late boat to Little Corn, you'll be hiking in the pitch black!

Don't use booking.com for this either! Good chance the reservation won't work through that site.

It was an adventure, but worth it!

It's off the grid, secluded, quiet, and all the other guests we met there were great!

We enjoyed our 4 nights at Dobedo. Our arrival here was the beginning of a 16-day Nicaraguan adventure, which took us to Little Corn Island, Leon, Maderas Beach (at San Juan del Sur), Ometepe and Laguna de Apoyo.
Owner/operator Matthew has literally carved this special place out of the jungle, creating rustic, yet clean and comfortable cabins on the site. The property is set back perhaps 100 feet from the water, but this actually provided a nice buffer from strong winds that prevail on the windward sides of Little Corn. Although it lacks views to the sea, it provides an oasis of tranquility as one walks through the mossy soft grass between the guest gazebo, private cabins and outdoor showers.
Another nice Dobedo bonus is that there is a freshwater well on site, providing great tasting drinking water for refilling of travel bottles. Our accommodations were very clean, and surprisingly bug free, so we found no need for the fancy mosquito netting that draped our bed upon arrival. Our host Matthew went out of his way to prepare a delicious fish dinner on the night of our late arrival, but generally we found ourselves using Dobedo as a home base for island hikes, beach explorations and breakfast and dinner excursions in the many restaurants in the town harbor of Little Corn.
Visitors should be aware that they are in for a 25 minute walk from the harbor to Dobedo. Most of this walk however is on solid sidewalk that serves as a roadway on this car-less island. The remainder of the path is well defined, but not well lit, so a flashlight is pretty much essential. After a few nightly treks, to and from town, we felt entirely safe on this trail and came to enjoy these day and evening walks.
Dobedo is a great value priced hotel, but also sits right beside the island's most expensive resort, which was great, as we could enjoy the convenience of the neighbouring beach bar during happy hour, as we watched the sun set on the most secluded and swimmable beach on the island.
We liked our time here and say thank you to Matthew and his wife and staff who made us feel very welcome and comfortable.

An ideal location for the cost conscious traveler. Dobedo on Little Corn Island, Nicaragua provides a rustic, if not romantic spot to enjoy the beauty of this island paradise without breaking the bank. Surrounded by Mango and Noni trees their ripe fruit is there for the picking, coconut trees and banana trees add an exotic ambiance to the landscape, while free range chickens provide never ending entertainment. Kevin, Dobedo’s manager, is friendly and knowledgeable and always ready to show a traveler around. This property shares a beach with the up-scale Yemaya Island Hideaway and Spa. I slept comfortably in a cabin next to the kitchen which has a bathroom. Facilities are clean, shower and commodes are located in a nearby hut showers on one side and toilets on the other, the sink is outside, next to a group of banana trees. If you enjoy the outdoors and a back to nature vacation give this place a try, I truly enjoyed Dobedo

Dobedo (pronounced by locals as "doo-be-doo") is a 15 min walk from the warf on Little Corn Island. You follow the signs through the jungle, past the baseball field. Its on the north/east area of the island with an amazingly private beach area.

You can choose from casita's (either private or joined) or the big house. We stayed in a casita and it was everything that we needed on little corn. Although it lacks some of the amenities of other places, it provides a rustic charm that matches the setting exactly. The caretaker Kevin made us breakfast one day which was simple and delicious. Just let them know a day in advance if you want food prepared.

**bring a flashlight with you, and some food so you don't need to keep going back to the town**

cons:
small sized beds are not great for tall people
fair distance away from the town/ferry
no lights outside at night

pros:
very private
amazing beach
snorkelling spots are right out front
nice communal area for relaxing with rocking chairs & hammock

I've stayed at Dobedo for three years in a row and had a wonderful time on each occasion. We have watched the property be developed by the owner and have enjoyed each new addition. We travelled as a couple and then with our toddler and really experienced Nicaraguan culture. The owner was very accomodating and taught us tons about the local flaura and fauna. The fruit he gave us from his yard was an awesome bonus. I'm even getting pretty good at chipping coconuts! This is a place where you can really chill out and live Nica style. The accommodations are basic but more than adequate and the beach is the best on the island.
