2023 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best
A new experience awaits guests at this beautiful all-inclusive beach hotel in Mauritius, located in Bel Ombre, on the island's south-west coast. Tamassa, a 4-star beach hotel, stands at the end of a long avenue of mature coconut palms towering skywards. A picture postcard landscape stretches across sugarcane fields to the mountains beyond. The south-west is a beautiful part of Mauritius, with spectacular walks and drives through lush, tropical hillsides and a range of open-air activities in beautiful countryside. In front of the beach hotel, beyond the sandy beach, lies a turquoise lagoon that almost blends into the skyline. The sea air is invigorating and the ripples of the waves gently calming. Beyond, lie thousands of miles of open sea. The traditional style architecture ideally suits the tropical setting, with beautifully landscaped gardens. The buildings seem at one with the environment. The decor is breathtakingly contemporary, with clean lines and bold use of colour. The atmosphere is one of eternal youth, friendly, cheerful and enthusiastic. Tamassa is a new Mauritian experience!

Omg! I don't know where to start! The list is too long. We came to Tamassa with some friends from Liverpool. I was giving them an ear ache, lol talking about the people and the resort, how beautiful the people are, and everyone was so accommodating and could not do enough for us, my husband and I are completely in love with this resort, the staff take great pride creating a welcoming atmosphere with there beautiful smiles and kindness were exceptional, nothing was to much trouble, they went out of there way to make our Aniverssary very special and memorable they treated us like family. We were truly grateful for the attention to detail they provided us on our Aniverssary: sun-kissed breakfast, romantic dinner at the Playa restaurant, 1 honeymoon cake with sparkles,A wish ritual at the garden of wishes, 30 min photo shoot, romantic bath with sparkling wine and chocolate dipped with fruit skewers, wow! We were made to feel like celebrities.. we are coming back in 2025 to renew our wedding vows! We can not fault this hotel. The food was excellent. there were lots of choices, burger van to die for, it was soooooo yummy 😋 there is a list of beautiful people I would like to mention below, thank you so much for showing us your kindness and love, you are our new family, can wait to see you guys next two years! Nishad deputy manger Mr Ram Altaaf buffet + restaurant Sterna Sharon Deviance Edinno, chief Baker Davina, cleaner Manvu, beach drink Aylash, drinks playa Jeshna Sarvesh, Avi, kersley, Sabrina,Ruben, luvnn, sanjana Baby doll, Lady in Red leana.. if we have forgotten anyone, a big thank you for all your kindness and for making of experience at Tamassa very memorable and special..love you guys,

Trip – 3rd November 2023 to 18th November 2023 from Gatwick London – arrival Mauritius 07.30 hrs local time. Collected from the airport by Tomassa’s driver who was both charming and informative and took exactly the expected 55 minutes to reach the resort at around 09.15 hrs. Arrival; The reception staff were very welcoming and efficient, and we were quickly checked in. We were very tired after our 12 hour flight. However, our room wasn’t available until the 14.00 hr check in time and although this was disappointing (as we were desperate to get some proper sleep) all was not lost. After being given a brief outline of the resort by the reception staff we were escorted to the dining room where we had a most delicious and welcoming breakfast. TOP TIP NO.1 – If you – like us - are on a flight that gets you to the resort early – don’t worry. Be sure to pack a bathing suit and sunscreen in your hand luggage or make sure its easily accessible in your main case and simply take up a spot on the beach or around one of the three swimming pools. The staff will show you where you can change and freshen up – beach towels will be provided. You can have access to your luggage. This will allow you to enjoy your first day in the sun with minimal hassle. Your luggage will be taken to your room as soon as it is ready, and you will be contacted to tell you when. Note; the sunbeds around the pools are more comfortable than those at the beach and more conducive to sleep. The Location; Tomassa is situated on the South coast of the island and it undoubtedly best suited to those who prefer a quieter – more relaxing holiday. The resort beach is uncrowded, pristine, and beautiful as are the many beaches along the South coast. There are ample sunbeds and plenty shade if you prefer. Bar boys attend the beaches and pools in the afternoon – taking drinks orders. There is almost nothing to see in the local area other than Bel Hombre plantation house and garden (and restaurant) and the remains of the sugar mill – they are both about a 15 minute walk. The South of the Island excursion is well worth the expense to see most of what is with seeing on the South of the Island. It should be noted that because it is on the South coast, there is a constant summer breeze or light wind. This is most notable when sitting at the beach but is barely noticeable when sitting next to the swimming pools. It is not unpleasant and in fact it is very welcome, but sun worshipers could be caught off guard by its pleasantly cooling effect. Top Tip No. 2 – Swimming – If you like to swim in the sea then swimming shoes are a must. The seabed and much of the shore line is covered in coral both dead and living and it can be quite hard on bare feet – swimming shoes make such a difference. The sea is clear bluish-green and a perfect temperature as you would expect and because it is a lagoon it remains quite shallow for quite a distance from the shore. However, there is quite a strong persistent current that takes you down the shoreline (west to east) quite quickly and is quite tough to swim against. This is never too dangerous as all one needs to do is stand up as the current is never too strong to walk against. Snorkelling can be recommended as there are numerous and diverse fish to be seen quite close to shore. The swimming pools are beautiful and perfect for families with small children as their depth increase is gradual. If as an adult, you are a ‘lane swimmer’ you will be disappointed but they are perfect for relaxing dips to cool off. The rooms – can be described as good quality; quiet and comfortable and well-appointed rather than luxurious – the beds are very comfortable, there is ample storage space and his and hers washbasins were a boon. A fridge, TV and kettle were also provided. WI-FI – seemed to be reliable and reasonably fast – in fact I was getting 30mbps to my phone while sitting by the pool and almost the same on the beach. Note: electric sockets are UK three pin type and most of them (at least bedside) have two USB sockets. Food and Dining: The dining experience could be described as relaxing and easy going as even though the dining room is large – it never seemed crowded or rushed. The choice of food excellent – vast and varied – though the main choices of dishes could be described as veering towards the spicy there was in fact always none spiced options available, and they were always piping hot and cooked to perfection. Of particular note (for me) was the bread; a huge variety all baked fresh on the premises – top notch. There was also an excellent choice of salads and fresh fruit on offer. The burger van is also worth a visit if an easier going lunch is preferred as they can be ‘eaten in’ or ‘take away’. I normally don’t like burgers, but these were first class, and a choice of beef, chicken or veggie were always available. Top Tip No.3 – it pays to make an initial ‘scouting tip’ around the food before making your choice as many people seemed to ‘go for it’ – picking up a plate and piling it up with foods as they went - that didn’t really go together only to leave most of it. It pays to be choosy – take a small selection at time and go back if you want to try something else. The Spar, Gym, and Games facilities – The Spar is a nice relaxing area with a Steam Room and Sauna and a relaxing but small swimming pool available to the standard ‘all inclusive package holder’. Treatments are extra and require booking and surprisingly a small jacuzzi is also extra. The whole area is quiet and relaxing and though it doesn’t have the feeling of ‘exclusivity’ that other Spars may have it was a perfectly lovely addition. The gym is reasonably well equipped with two running machines, a rowing machine, and a stepper. It also has a weights machine of reasonable quality and a good selection of dumbbells. Booking is not required, and I never had to wait more than a few minutes to use the weights machine. You must sign in to use the gym and by scanning the book I could work out the quiet times to use the gym. There are also good tennis facilities, table tennis and pool as well as a small five-aside pitch. Staff: The Staff were by far the biggest asset to the resort. Always pleasant and courteous they seemed to be always available a ready to help. I cannot praise them highly enough – from the housekeeping staff to the bar and restaurant staff to the reception staff – all were first class. Note: If you go out and about in Mauritius – particularly if you are walking locally – be prepared for local people to stop and chat to you. They are universally friendly and pleasant and seemed to be desperate to know if you are enjoying your time in Mauritius – they are a joy to engage with. Mauritius is a model of how good a genuine multicultural society can be. Check Out – was basically a reverse of the fist day. We had an early evening flight but had to vacate our room by 11am (which is quite normal). However, this was not a problem as we simply packed and left our traveling home clothes at the top of our suitcase – checked out wearing casual attire, carrying our sunbathing/swimming gear and then retired to a final day sunbathing and swimming. An hour before our pickup was due, we collected our cases – went to the gym, where we were provided with clean towels (and a hair dryer) and the opportunity to shower and change in comfort. Our driver arrived exactly on time, and he took exactly 55 minutes to get us to the airport. Conclusion – All in all an excellent holiday in a beautiful, quiet, and relaxing resort with great facilities and an outstanding staff.

What a gorgeous hotel. 1st our thanks - the staff we'd compliment in particular would be Naomie in the fitness studio - so smiley and friendly. Anastazia for the wonderful guided walk to the plantation chateau & all the nature facts (giant snails!). Chef Jean Edinho for his mouthwatering pastries (best pain au raisin of my life). The lovely ladies on the Burger Truck. Kevin the reception manager for sorting out our Expedia mix up (don't use expedia people!) and Justin our favourite waiter, so funny and charismatic. Tips for future guests - the hotel is so cleverly laid out, it never felt crowded. You don't need to save a sun bed, you can move around from one pool to another, to the beach and back, as you wish. The all included facilites are amazing - glass bottom boat ride, kayak, pedalo, spa, burger truck, rum truck! Chat with the staff and they'll happily fill you in on everything. Check out the activity schedule, as some things are tucked away, like the lovely tree of wishes ceremony and ringing the bell of happiness. And you can use the sauna, steam and elegant spa pool for free without booking a treatment! Check your small print before you book about whether you can eat at Playa. Some room categories get it and others don't, and it's well worth having that. If you're eating at the main buffet restaurant, grab an outside table and you'll feel like you're in a v high end restaurant not a buffet, with a lovely calm view over the floodlit pool! Tips for management - please untangle the complexity of different contracts with different providers, it was soooo confusing about our Playa entitlement, although Kevin sorted it out beautifully in the end. Also perhaps give every guest a copy of the activity schedule for the week on arrival - fitness, spa events and evening shows, as lots of folk we chatted to had no idea there was so much going on. Thanks for a wonderful stay, we'll be back for sure! Angie & Grant, UK.
