After waiting 3 years due to Covid I had very high expectations for my belated 50th Birthday celebrations at Wakatobi. The staff managed to exceed these on every level and included a complementary private dinner on the beach for our anniversary. The diving is stunning with some of the most amazing sites and critters I have ever seen: hairy octopus, blue ringed octopus, wanderpus, ornate cuttlefish, bargibanti & pontoh’s pygmy seahorse, ornate, robust & halimeda ghost pipefish plus a painted frog fish orgy to pick out a few… The highlight of our 2 week trip was without doubt spending a week onboard the Pelagian live aboard for a tour of the Wakatobi national park and Buton Island. Even my non diving wife preferred the Pelagian to the main island and was made to feel very welcome by all the staff and fellow divers. Safety is taken very seriously and as we were diving in remote locations all divers were issued with their own Nautilus GPS personal locator beacon on day 1. The service and attention to detail is even better than at the resort and all the meals and snacks provided by chef Hadi were simply divine. Ramon & Judith the cruise directors were absolutely amazing as was Christian and all the staff on board. I completed all 24 dives during the week and was blown away by the muck diving at Pasarwajo. Unfortunately my smb and ratchet reel became dislodged when I rolled in off the zodiac for a dive. We conducted a quick search at the end of the dive but alas it couldn’t be found. This didn’t deter the team as they managed to find it on the following week and a delighted Judith returned it to me in time for our return flight - What a legend! Ramon your energy and love for the natural world is exemplary and I loved diving with you. Thanks for making our trip special and for all the amazing memories… Best wishes P & P

I've just come back from diving in the Maldives and I dived perfectly, even though I'd almost given up during my stay at Wakatobi! The dive master (English) had made me lose all confidence in myself. He told me I didn't know how to palm (although I've done over 300 dives), while he systematically made us dive against the current. As he wasn't at all interested in the divers in his group (no help or advice), he didn't see that the reason for my difficulties was a jacket that was much too big for me. I'd said that my usual size was XS, but at the diving center they'd told me I needed an S. As a result, most of my dives were ruined by this problem, which was never remedied by the dive master. I almost gave up diving for good! A word of advice if you go to Wakatobi: make sure you ask for an Indonesian dive master. They're much more focused on their customers than Western dive masters. And be careful when buying the diving package: I was forced to buy the 3-dives-a-day package, and once I was there I couldn't change it... I wrote twice to the customer relations office to report the problems, but they never replied ... so I'm taking advantage of Tripadvisor to report my dissatisfaction once again and alert future customers of this resort (I've seen that I'm not the only one to complain about Western dive masters!).

Attention to detail from the owner and management are superb. Lovely, lovely staff. Outstanding snorkeling, like being in an aquarium. Not the best for pelagics, but they've sewn up everything else! Oh, some of the best lavatory art I've ever seen....

We (husband & wife) have been guests at Wakatobi Dive Resort in early October, 2023. We rarely write reviews but we felt we had to write this one. We are very well traveled all over the world for more than 35 years, and we stayed many times at luxury places, so we have a good idea about high standards and hospitality. In one brief statement: Wakatobi Dive Resort is in a league by itself. Staff & Management: The friendliness, warmth, care and attention to detail is unmatched by any other place we have visited. They will clean your bungalow/villa twice a day. They will fill every day your refrigerator with the soft drinks of your choice. Everybody will call you by your name and will ask you all the time what they can do for you to make you filling great. Whatever you ask for, they will deliver, unless you are asking the impossible. I got an ear infection and I was concerned it will ruin my last 2 days at the resort. Chris, the manager, recommended the right antibiotic drops they had in the store and next day I was back in the water. Food was delicious and great variety from appetizers to desserts and drinks. Everything, including bread is cooked/baked in house. Waitresses and waiters are amazing. So kind and warm! Service is very efficient. Ask for their ice cream at lunch and dinner. Mango and berries flavors are our favorites. Our bungalow was perfect, right near the jetty, a few meters from the water. Everybody is raving about the outside shower, and so are we. Guided Snorkeling/Diving around the resort is fantastic. The variety of coral of many colors is amazing. The guides are very knowledgeable and trying to find most unusual marine creatures for you. The boats they are using are very large and comfortable in comparison with boats used by other resorts. The toilets on these boats are much larger than any toilet on a small cruise ship we have seen and obviously spotlessly clean. Snorkeling/Diving on the House Reef are equally great. This is a place that must be experienced in real life – no words can do it justice. We felt so spoiled during our stay, we did not want to leave… But we will be back!

If you love scuba, comfort, excellent food, and peace from the world Wakatobi is the place to be. The operation is smooth, staff are extremely friendly and facilities are top notch, especially if you keep in mind that this resort is in an extremely remote area. Scuba is amazing with 3 boat dives per day and unlimited dives in the house reef. All dives are 70 min long. If you are an air hog, ensure you get the large tank. Housing is available for different price points. From luxurious villas to simple bungalows. Staff are friendly and housekeeping is superb. The food is fantastic with a mix of local cuisine and international dishes for the less adventurous. Yes, it is expensive, but trust me, it is worth it.

As an avid snorkeler (also a diver but quit diving several years ago), Wakatobi has been on my bucket list for years. Overall it did not disappoint. Let's start with the good. Beautiful island! The ocean bungalows were a great size for 2 people. The a/c worked well and I loved the outdoor shower. It was quiet and peaceful. The grounds were immaculately groomed each day. They even raked designs into the sand all over the island. The staff was incredible. Everyone, and I mean everyone, knows your name by the second day. They went above and beyond with any request. My friend had very little snorkel experience and a disability and they provided us a last minute private guide (at a cost) to get her up to speed. He was so patient and kind working with her to get comfortable. The dive boats were roomy and spacious and Wakatobi was not stingy about letting us space out. They provided snacks and drinks on the boat as well as hot towels as soon as you came out of the water. As snorkelers, we had no more than 4 people in our group and most days it was just 1-2. I was worried as a snorkeler that I would be treated as a second class citizen to the divers and that was not the case at all. They prioritized our comfort and pleasure just as much as everyone else. The snorkeling itself was amazing. I've never seen so much healthy coral and sheer amount of fishlife. I will say that there are no big critters here so if that's your thing, I would bypass it. I was able to see octopus, cuddlefish, turtles, eagle ray, lots of sea snakes, and too many fish to count. We had great visibility but a couple of days the sea was pretty rough. They worked hard to accommodate for that. Now the not so good...the food. This is not a knock on the waitstaff or kitchen staff who was, again, all incredible. The food is buffet style (which is not my favorite to begin with). It was all fine. Nothing terrible, nothing spectacular. Fairly bland. Desserts were the worst. Tasteless and not sweet. Same for the ice cream that so many people seemed to enjoy. Apparently there was pasta that could be specially ordered but it took us over half the week to figure that out. They should be more forthcoming about the options available outside of the buffet. I could deal with the food in exchange for everything else but it's not a reason to go here. I was pretty sick of it after a week. This is a small thing but I also got pretty tired of the barefoot requirement. You are not allowed to wear shoes inside any of the buildings so you have to wear your flip flops to get there, wash your feet, and leave your shoes at the door. I have plantar fascitis and going barefoot is painful for me after a while so I didn't like being forced to do so. Also, one guy there the week we were there had his flip flops stolen and never found (that had to be intentional). I would say the worst thing on our stay at Wakatobi had to do with the owner's son. He looked to be about 8-10 years old. He was on our flight to Wakatobi and was there the whole week. And believe me, you heard him before you saw him. He was constantly yelling, running, pushing guests out of the way at the buffet. He clobbered my friend trying to get her snorkeling bearings on the house reef the first day. His parents were not around and the staff was subjected to taking care of this kid. His nickname was the "pest." Honestly, it almost ruined the whole experience for me as I didn't pay thousands of dollars to be subjected to the owner's unruly kid and I felt sorry for the staff who looked like they were also being tortured dealing with him. Overall, the trip was amazing and Wakatobi is a magical place that I'll always remember. It definitely opened my eyes to an underwater world I want to experience again.

Wakatobi has been an absolutely amazing experience. The diving is mind-blowing…the health of the reefs and the sheer number of species makes for fantastic dives…and the snorkeling right on the house reef is literally the best we have seen in the world. Accommodations and food have been lovely, but the thing that makes wakatobi really stand out (besides diving) is the service. Every single person on the staff is lovely, always smiling, always wanting to help…from the dive guides to food staff to front desk to maintenance. They made us feel at home and welcome every single minute. Can’t wait to come back!

My dive travel experience; Instructor 2247 dives 92.5 weeks of travel outside of the US for diving Not an easy place to get to but a very nice property. We stayed for a total of eleven nights (36 dives) and were travelling with a couple that often travel with us. I would give it a five star rating if it was not for a service issue we had with one of their staff. Starting with the resort. We had a standard non-view room and it was plenty spacious with a good bed. The pillows were just okay, but interestingly the resort has several pillows to choose from. I tried two different kinds but did not like either. The property is very well manicured and very clean. The restaurant was buffet only and a bit odd on the food choices for my taste, but everyone else seemed to like it. The service from the hotel and restaurant staff was amazing. They call you by your name after the second day. Now for the diving. The house reef is a great dive but not very accessible. It is dependent on the currents and the tides. The staff do their best to make the house reef as diveable a possible, but it can be a bit difficult. The boats used to reach the dive spots are very large and roomy with easy entry and exits. The dive guides did their best to find you critters, but unfortunately I felt the diving in the area was a bit boring with mostly poor visibility. We rarely got more than 60 feet of vis and although the reefs and fish life were above average, the critters were lacking. This certainly is no Raja Ampat nor does it have any muck. So, here was my issue. I found the local staff to be very pleasant and accommodating but the white staff (scuba shop) to be mostly uninterested in you or your needs. Our last day of diving it was announced that we would be repeating a dive site for the third time. I strolled over to the two dive guides on the boat, one being an Indonesian who was our guide and the second a white guide, and requested that we go somewhere else as the four in my group had done the dive twice before. The white guy immediately spoke up and said we could not as his dive group had not been there yet. He basically left us with no option or suggestions. By the way there were only two in his group. The good news is our guide worked it out and we were moved to another boat, but it was inconvenient. This was not the only issue with white employees at the hotel as they mostly walked by you without acknowledging your existence. Again, nice place with generally great service, but the diving was not what I expect from Indonesia.

Outstanding experience with every detail carefully thought through! Over 40 plus dive sites, spectacular guides, excellent equipment, attentive and friendly service and world class food. The restaurant focuses on local ingredients and specialities. It will be difficult to go anywhere else and the high percentage of repeat visitors says it all. They take care of you from the very first email enquiry until you return home. What other resort would arrange for land tours with their own guides a week before you step foot on the resort. You will not be disappointed and this organizations gives back to the local community and is helping to protect the local reefs. They are serious about protecting the local area.
