Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This hotel is the worst! No titanium benefits; poor service, horrible check in; lounge closed for season! No pantry. Restaurant closed. Forced all guests into their bar to eat with limited bar type seating, kids included. Kids everywhere running around making noise all day & night. Had to park offsite even tho their parking empty; holes in sheets, room service order wrong, bar food order also wrong. Has a very negative atmosphere in and around the hotel. Had to fight to reduce stay from 3 nights to 1 night, and couldn't get out of there soon enough. This place needs new management asap!!!

Absolutely the most unfriendly and dare I say combative front desk interaction had in my life. I have never written of review before. I have been a Marriott platinum elite member for 25 years. Was asking a simple question about adding an additional night pending inclement weather and their 5 day cancellation policy and was met with the most rude and nasty person who said “obviously you know more than I do” - I don’t know what to tell you “. Not sure if this was just a bad day for her or if this is how she genuinely operates. A very bad look for Marriott. And frankly horrible feeling for Newport.

Before coming here, I was a little hesitant after seeing some less-than-positive reviews. Having completed my stay, I have no idea what those people are talking about. I thoroughly enjoyed the Newport Marriott! The room was immaculately clean, great water pressure, the bed was extraordinarily comfortable… what more could you want? I saw a few people complaining about the nautical lamps at the bed sides. Seriously? They’re lovely and emit a great warm light that made the room really inviting. I also saw others complaining about a view of a parking lot. I suppose my room had the parking lot view as well, but who cares? It’s not JUST a parking lot that you see, and if you’re coming to Newport, you should be outside experiencing the city, not just looking out a hotel room window! The valet and front staff were great, the M Club had a nice breakfast buffet, and the location of this hotel is right where you want it to be to access the marinas, wharfs, and Thames Street. Would definitely recommend this hotel for any trip to Newport!

Reserved a room a week ahead of a stay so I knew I'd pay a premium. Apparently there was a big running race in town and there was some huge wedding that weekend so I ended up paying $640 or so per night (fri-sun) for an 'Guest Room - King' The pictures when viewing the specific room choosen show a street view. I wasn't going to be $900 for a water view and I think the Attrium view was sold out but I don't recall. When entering our room and opening the shades, I had an interior view of the elevators. Litterally 8 feet from our room. As I opened them, people were standing there looking at me:) I quickly closed the blinds. (see the photo) It was late so I wanted to get to bed so I didn't change the room. Problem is you hear the elevator doors ding all night long and you'll hear all of the drunk people coming and going all night. Next day I was like 'no way I'm paying this much for a room like this and I think it's ridiculous that they don't list these rooms separately at a discounted rate. I ended up switching the room the next day (even though it was sold out) and got a parking lot view which was much quieter. So someone who was about to check-in was going to get my terrible room. Also, be aware that there is a $30 destination fee per night that may be included in the price you view. This $30 is a credit towards hotel restaurants and probably the spa I guess. The breakfast buffet is $30 so I guess it works out as long as you have one meal per day at the hotel (or I think the bar too). Now I haven't yet seen this credit applied to my bill (I have to check on that) but just be aware of this fee. Overall the hotel is fine. It's a bit date in terms of the rooms and if there's an event going on in the atrium, it's going to be loud and you'll hear it in your room. I wouldn't call this a 4 star hotel. The main restaurant is OK. The menu is limited but the staff are super nice and the food was descent (went to dinner the night we arrived since it was too late to hunt for a restaurant and we had to use that $30 credit). It's a quick walk to downtown (whatever area that is called with the shops and bars). It was nice being here in mid Oct since it was quieter and could easily get a reservation and bars weren't swamped. Do the Cliff Walk and visit The Breakers. It's worth it.

As part of a wedding block we paid $600+ dollars for a small room with a view of a parking garage and a closet you couldn't hang a dress or suit in. The furniture was cheap and the customer service (except for the valet) was sub par. When I spoke to the front desk about the disparity in rooms for fellow wedding guests for the same price, employee with apathetic. If you are planning a wedding in Newport, do your guests a favor and go somewhere else. This hotel is a rip-off. I'll will try to avoid Marriott hotels in the future.

Overall this stay was a disappointment. We stayed at this hotel for our 20th Wedding Anniversary. From the minute my husband checked we found this facility to be nothing but a “Money Grab”. Positives: Staff was nice and the entrance lobby extremely clean. Negatives: FEES: He was told that they have a $30 “destination fee” but it would be credited if you ate at one of their restaurants. Then a $40 parking fee, you could pay this fee for valet or park it yourself. ROOM: Room was extremely small, we had a luggage cart and once it was in the room there was very little room to move around. Continuing with the room the bathroom was VERY small. I HAVE SEEN BIGGER ROOMS ON A CRUISE SHIP. The room was dated and needed up dates. Carpet was stained as was the couch in the room. Room view was of the parking garage. Wonderful view for a $500+ room! Restaurant: expensive by any standard, coffee $7 and a standard breakfast $22. Very disappointing!

Unfortunately my stay with my daughter at the Newport Marriott began so poorly that it cast a pall over the 2 days/nights that followed. The check-in team was condescending and disrespectful. I understand that early arrival cannot be guaranteed, but in my travels it is often honored and, at the very least, my room is always available at the "regular" check in. On Marriott's app they note that you can choose your check-in time on their dropdown which includes 11AM, so right away that creates a false sense that your checkin may actually be honored. I arrived at 11:30 and totally understood our room wouldn't be ready at that point but I asked to be wait listed. I stopped by the front desk again at 3PM, nothing. By 4PM, when I was told my room was still not ready, I got angry and was met with platitudes and a negative attitude from Christina, the front desk manager, that steamed me up even more. There is no way I was ever wait listed for my room - and a water view one at that, which is quite pricy and I'd so looked forward to enjoying it. Finally at 4:35 I got the key to my room. I also asked for a voucher and received a $50 one, something that should have voluntarily been given to me, I should not have to have asked for it! Where is the courtesy? To add insult to injury, my remote broke and our TV would not shut off the last night, had to have a technician come to our room at 9:30, it would've been funny if it just hadn't been the icing on a very poorly made cake. I will never return to the Newport Marriott and right now I'm not sure when I'll go to any Marriotts, that's how bad this experience was for me.

Overall this stay was a big disappointment: Positives > professional staff > very well maintained (high quality decor and spaces) .>wonderful location > very nice bar with pleasant outside space Negatives > awful air conditioning setup: blows aggressively on one's head while in bed. So bad that it had to be turned off on a hot day...simply awful > The desk had one (dim!) light and no place to plug in (110 volt) unless you crawled under the desk. Even cheap hotels provide lamps with outlets or some type of power strip on the desk. > The desk side of the room was very dark (that one dim desk lamp)..no other lamps and NO overhead lighting in the room whatsoever. > The headboard side of the room also had no easy way to plug in unless one was willing to crawl under the table separating the beds > not a usb port anywhere to be seen in the entire room > EXPENSIVE!..this room was almost $700 a night...if we had a great experience that would have been OK, but...(see above)

Horrible experience. Very unexpected for Marriott. Expensive and overrated. Dinner in a completely empty hotel restaurant. Inflexible system of having to use their valet to park the car is waste of time and money.

Gorgeous hotel! We have a harbor view and it's beautiful. Everything feels fresh and clean. Rooms have all the updates. Valet parking required, but you are right in the middle of everything. Walkable to all of the shopping. This Marriott feels very upscale.
