My husband and I went to Skotel in April 2017 and it was a good experience. The hotel is huge even though the environment is welcoming and warm. The hotel is located in Whakapapa village, right at the beginning of a three hours trekking to the Tongariro crossing and six kilometers away from a ski station. The hotel has so...

We were staying at the Skotel after hiking the Tongariro Crossing. We were in the hostel area with shared bathrooms. The room was musty and the bedding smelled stale. It was very unpleasant. Even after informing staff there were issues in the bathroom, the empty toilet paper rolls and plugged toilets were still there the next day. Had dinner at...

We were very disappointed with what we got for the price. It was a very small dated room. Only half an hour of wifi was provided for our overnight stay. The staff were lovely and the food was excellent. It is very remote with nothing much to do except go on walks. Wont be rushing back here.

The location is great while exploring the Tongariro National Park and has awesome views of Ngauruhoe,Tongariro etc from the decks. We spent one night in Cabin 4 while doing some walking in the area, the Tama Lakes walk starts practically on your door step. Although the Cabin is quite dated, it has a nice feel to it and is clean....

Spent 2 days here recently. The Skotel is well placed to take advantage of the many activities in the area. Staff were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. Our rooms were comfortable and warm. We had 2 young children with our party and they made sure they were catered for. There was no problem with some of us...

This review is only for the restaurant; we were staying elsewhere so I cannot comment on the hotel as a place to stay. Our group of ~25 ate at Skotel twice in January 2016, and the restaurant was very accommodating in terms of arranging tables for us in the upstairs area. However the food was quite poor - heavy, bland,...

First let me start by saying that this is a 3* hotel and I am keeping this in mind while reviewing it. We enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it, but feel that the below info will give one a better idea of what to expect: Location: The accommodation is in Whakapapa Village, close to many trails and walks....

A planned stop over on our way to Auckland. Very relaxed atmosphere and a refreshing mini break that allowed us to unwind. Had a great meal in the restaurant, a relaxed walk around the village in the evening and took advantage of the free spa. Will plan to stop again next time through. Great service from friendly staff.

Arrived here to do the Tongariro Crossing unfortunately rained out. But the hotel is in a terrific spot where you still have access to numerous hikes even on a rainy day. Thought the front desk service was very helpful. Beautiful views from the room even on a rainy day. Cons--paid internet. Felt the room's furnishings were old and dated. Note:...

We stayed there before and after the Tongariro Circuit and were more than satisfied. We got a 3 bed room for the two of us so plenty of space. There is everything: fully equipped kitchen, a sink in the room, hot tub (free), free parking over several days, hot showers and everything is so clean! Special thanks to Sonya at...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Skotel was established in the early 60s by a group of keen skiers who wanted the convenience of accommodation close to the ski-fields but more comfort than the ski lodges of that time. In 1986 it underwent a major expansion with the addition of restaurant, bar and other facilities. The old part of the building became the backpacker’s wing. Skotel has maintained its friendly informal atmosphere but now provides Qualmark three star accommodation and the exciting cuisine experiences of our new dinner menu. ... more   less
