The Van Gilder is much more run-down than the site portrays. On the fire exit steps at the rear of the building, I noted active rotting as well as apparent patchwork from previously rotted areas. We were assigned a room with a "shared" bathroom, and...More

There is a big difference between historic and just threadbare and dirty. Sadly, this historic hotel is now just a hostel. Nothing historic but the plaque on the front. The rooms are small and the whole hotel has a musty smell.

Hotel was built in 1916, originally as an office building. Rooms on first floor are not large, but comfortable. Located in central business district. Some rooms have claw-feet bathtubs. Walking distance to the waterfront.

Thank you for appreciating the history of our hotel! We are the oldest still operating hotel in Seward. We will pass on the good feedback to Danny.
