We arrived at Calamity peak lodge after a long flight from Australia in October 2017. The accommodation was basic yet comfortable and perfect for what we needed. We traveled off season and wanted somewhere to stay for a week while we explored the black hills and surrounding areas just before Winter. Joe was friendly and welcoming and helped us choose hiking trails and gave advice about the area. We had traveled from Australia just to visit the black hills and having Joe provide us with advice and travel ideas was priceless. It felt like staying at home away from home. I didn't want to leave. Our room (the smallest room) had a double bed, fold out bed, shower and small bath. It was toasty warm and night and comfortable. Thank you for providing such warm and friendly service. We will be staying here again the next time we travel to Custer. I miss this place! It felt like staying with family.

Joe and Lori, can't thank you enough for a memorable stay! Our stay in #10 was perfect, warm & cozy (19 degrees outside) spotless, so scenic and a perfect location! Your suggestions were always spot on, even about the buffalo licking salt from the road...and cars! From eagle sightings, antelope, Dahl sheep and the buffalo round up pens, experiences we loved and will never forget, thanks to you. We're planning our trip next fall (perfect season) and will book #10 as soon as we have our dates.

Thank you ever so much for a memorable stay!

Just had a very pleasant stay at Calamity Peak Lodge in September. Our unit was incredibly clean and comfortable. You can park at your door. The location is very convenient to the town of Custer and local attractions. We used it as our home base for 4 days. Be aware that some of the dining options in Custer either close kind of early or have altered hours (or are not even open) after Labor Day. The local grocery store should have all or most of what you need. This is a reasonably priced, beautiful location for your travels around Custer, Mt. Rushmore, etc. The owner was very helpful at check-in with directions and suggestions.
Thank Lynn B

Although it was an older building the room had everything we needed and was very clean and comfortable. The only reason I did not give it a 5 was because the bathroom door stuck and I could not figure out how to make the shower work.

With a dog and on a budget sometimes it’s hard to find a place that is clean, friendly and close to where you want to be. Calamity Peak fits the bill. It’s next to a stream with big boulders on one side and a pasture on the other. There is a paved walking path towards town. Beautiful setting, squeaky clean and a wonderful host. Close to Crazy Horse,Rushmore, Custer Wildlife Loop and THE NEEDLES Highway. Don’t miss the Needles in my opinion the most spectacular of all the above.
Would return in a heart beat!
