My mom and I stayed here as part of our Gate 1 tour of Costa Rica and honestly, like most hotels on the itinerary it was outdated, full of bugs and even a lizard in our shower. The wifi did not work and the staff basically did nothing to remedy the situation despite numerous contact attempts. Would recommend just sticking with a regular updated hotel unless you just have a preference for outdoor stuff.

Having checked into the tilajari resort on the 4th day of our Costa Rican journey - we have been severely disappointed. The rating of the hotel is 4 star, we have come as tourists from the U.K and have been treated poorly with zero hospitality from the check in point. We have been checked into an outdated room with damp rising up the walls, dirty bedsheets and old rusted cupboards, I am not sure how this makes it a 4 star resort. Pictures available. When asking for simple things like towels or basic provisions, the hotel haven’t been able to help us. We asked for a map of the local area and their reply was “we do not have one” when pushed for even local map, again we were met with “no we have no maps of the area”. What 4 star resort in a tourist hub have no maps? Surely this is not the standard for a 4 star resort? We were informed at the check in to ask for the sauna to be switched on at least 20 minutes before use, which we proceeded to do. On arriving to the sauna, it was cold, not switched on and the door left open. We complained once again to the front desk - where Robert the attendant to check us in, just said “ I don’t know”. We informed Robert we are vegetarian in diet, could he ensure the breakfast are informed of this. His reply “you have to tell the restaurant yourself”. What a poor service for the San Carlos and la fortuna area. We would not return here or recommend any international travellers to come through to this hotel. So far we appalled with the service, made to feel uncomfortable as if we are in the way of there extremely non busy season. It has left what was such a great start with a horrid taste of poor hospitality and discomfort to our trip. Perhaps as we are foreign we have been treated differently.

Dear Punn Family: First to of all we want to thank you very much for meeting us at the Front Desk during your visit and giving us personally your feedback. It is much better when we have that type of closeness with our customers and receive all their impressions about what we need to improve to give a better service. During our personal conversation we explained you the different room types we have; Standard, Jr. Suite, Superiors and Classics. You booked the Classic one category and even these are well maintained rooms and considering they are on the most requested issue which is ¨River View ¨ we can understand sometimes it could look dark and humid as we are in the middle of the rainforest and humidity is a characteristic of this kind of forest- However we are going to work with your suggestion about open windows to make them fresher and ventilated. We hope you have enjoyed our Superior rooms for the last two nights that we offered as a free upgrade during your staying. We are happy we could change your mind about those comments. Even we have been opened for 35 years in hospitality industry we have settled our daily goal to fulfill customer needs. We work under that direction every day. We enjoy visits of clients from every part of the world and our values are based on respect. Once, again thank you very for stopping back with us and giving us your feedback. We are working on those issues we agreed in our conversation. They are solved now. Thank you!

Having checked into the 3rd hotel on our Costa Rican journey, the tilajari hotel resort - I cannot speak any positives of this resort. When asking for simple things like towels or basic provisions, the hotel haven’t been able to help us. We asked for a map of the local area and their reply was “we do not have one” when pushed for even local map, again we were met with “no we have no maps of the area”. What 4 star resort in a tourist hub have no maps? From a hospitality perspective we would have accepted a printed map from Google, just something to take in case our electronics died. We are shocked that a basic map cannot be provided. We suspect some racism, or laziness towards us - as surely this is not the standard for a 4 star resort? So far we appalled with the service, made to feel uncomfortable as if we are in the way of there extremely non busy season. It has left what was such a great start with a horrid taste of poor hospitality and discomfort to our trip.

We took a $459 package deal through Gate1 that included this resort and were very pleasantly surprised. Service was great room comfortable and breakfast awesome. We took all of our meals and sightseeing just outside the compound although there were plenty of great encounters on the property. Matiz Cafe about 1/2 mile outside the gate had awesome food at 1/3 the price and the town of Muele San Carlos great to explore. Enjoy the scenery at dusk. We drove up to Arenal Volcano just as the sun was setting for incredible pictures and spared ourselves the $80 tram fee. Careful of the damaged bridge about 5 km north, hole in bridge, instead of fixing it the put 2 huge speed bumps Overall great and super cheap stay

We stayed for 3 nights at this resort in the middle of May, The hotel was superclean and the staff and crew were wonderful. My Spanish is American high school mixed with living in an area where there are many immigrants and they at least understood me and smiled and spoke back in impeccable English. The breakfast that was included was wonderful pinto gallo, plantains, eggs, sausage along with some bakery items. Could use some yogurt and maybe some oatmeal, for those of us that don't eat large breakfast in the am. The one dinner that we ate there was delicious, though a little expensive. We ate mostly at Soda's (Mom and Pop local restaurants) in the area. The last day, the owner stopped and talked with us during breakfast, An ex-pat from the US who was in the Peace Corp 50 years ago and fell in love with the country and moved there, He was very interesting. Would definitely stay here again.

Very nice accommodation next to river with abundant wildlife. Spacious rooms and the shower is among the finest I've experienced. The restaurant serves good quality food though I wish it had some local options instead of catering to international clients only.

Good food and service in the restaurant, visits from bats, cicadas, large lizards and colourful birds. Pleasant grounds to walk around and reasonable gym/exercise facilities (including tennis courts and football pitch).

Stayed here 3 nights as part of a tour. Some rooms had balconies (entry door facing away from the river) others not. I was in 504 with entry facing the river and no balcony. Room had 2 queen beds, air conditioning, and a nice bathroom. Restaurant breakfast and dinner were buffet (they dish out the food). Food service was slow (1 person doing all the dishing), but food was tasty. This hotel had the best bar selection of all of my hotels in CR. The restaurant and bar are covered, open air. One night there was live music in the bar/restaurant. Great bird watching as the staff put out fruit in the morning. Wifi was good, but not fast. Hotel staff working in the restaurant diligently wore masks, but not so on the grounds. We got a great view of Arenal Volcano from the hotel property. Staff at the front desk were spotty with masks. Gift shop is on site, but selection is limited. Given many tourists are avoiding city shopping, this was a missed opportunity for the hotel to upsell.

Rooms arranged in blocks of eight - four rooms up and four down . Upper rooms, accessed by upper sidewalk have balconies, while lower rooms have decks. Balconies and decks face an expanse of grass and the river. The block closest to the restaurant have room numbers in the 600 series. Blocks continue along the walks to rooms in the 100 series. Rooms are basic but clean. AC is a bit hard to adjust, nice toiletries including moisturizing lotion, hand soap and three wall mounted products in the shower. WiFi is fairly reliable. There is a safe in the room however there is a charge of $3 per day to obtain the safe key from reception. Buffet breakfast all served by staff. Nice size pool with loungers, a short walkway near the pool leads to a viewing platform (lots of iguanas below near the river) and a jacuzzi. Throughout the morning, staff puts bananas in the trees at the back of the restaurant which attracts many birds.

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights and really wanted to love it. It fell short in a few areas which was a shame because it could be amazing. On the whole it just seemed dated. Visiting the "butterfly house" on site summed it up. An old netted aviary with tropical plants and peacocks...which I'd have rather seen roam free. No butterflies... On arrival (with 2 large duffle bags, 4 backpacks and camera bags) we were proudly introduced to 4 members of staff on reception then told our room was not far to walk. No offer to help with bags set the tone for our stay... Would only return for one night max! Pros: - River setting - Bird feeding at breakfast - jacuzzi area by pool - sports facilities - iguanas - lake Cons: - dated - felt more suited to one night stays as part of organised tours - slow service - pool area didn't have enough sun loungers for guests - pool area was grey concrete, looked dated - food was very average - no room service Tip for hotel - The lake was nice but it seemed under used. It could have had a decking area with sun beds to take pressure away from the pool.

Thanks Alex! The lake is a project in process yet, delayed by the pandemic. Places to seat, decks and better garden are included to be developed soon. Butterfly garden is not longer working since last year, we are working to make this area a plants and trees nursery to continue our task to help reforestation. We are sorry you had a bad impression of our staff, which normally strives to as much helpfull as possible with our visitors. We have already talked to Front Desk department about the situation you describe in order to be more attentive the next time a guest need something like you did. Restaurant service is also been supervised, so good service has always been important for us and it´s a highlight in many years of operation. Your comments are appreciated as feedback to keep improving.
