Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were traveling from Scottsdale to Denver and decided to stop in Cortez, CO as we were headed to the wild horse management area at Spring Creek Basin near Dove Creek, CO and this was the closest town with good lodging options. This is one of the best Hampton Inns we have stayed in - location is at the edge of town (so quiet), hotel looks brand new; super comfortable bed and pillows and high quality bed linens. Amy at the front desk was very welcoming and the breakfast was delish! We set off early next morning after a restful night and were lucky to see several bands of wild horses at Spring Creek and we also ran into TJ, who was there checking on her sanctuary horses as well as the wild bands. I recommend doing this if you are a horse/nature lover. It is a unique experience!

Hotel's Favourite
This is a great place to stay while visiting Mesa Verde National Park. The staff were friendly and service-oriented. I give the hotel high marks for room cleanliness - that’s really important to me. Furnishings and fixtures were up to date and spotless. Beds and pillows were comfortable. Breakfast was good - standard hotel breakfast with eggs, sausage, waffles, yogurt, coffee, etc. would stay here again.

Hotel looks brand new. Staff is friendly. Everything worked. It was clean. Good location to go to Mesa Verde. No problem with reservations. (Unlike most of the time I use Priceline. Priceline is failing customers) This Hampton Inn is the first of my 3 on the trip. I would recommend the Hampton Inn Cortez, Colorado for your vacation needs. But not Lubbock nor Houston Galleria.

TL:DR – Carlos (front desk) and Janice (general manager) were the most rude and disrespectful hotel employees I’ve ever met. They kicked out our young family with two small children of the hotel for simply requesting a pack n play. Please beware of their ridiculous and shameful behavior before staying at this hotel. We requested a pack n play for our baby from Carlos when we checked in. He informed us that the hotel only had 2, and that they were currently used, but he would try and obtain another one for us and would let us know when he got one. 3 hours later, we followed up to see if he had been able to get a pack n play. He simply said “no”. We asked him if it would be possible for an employee to purchase one for the hotel so that my daughter could have a place to sleep for the night. He laughed and mocked me for suggesting this and sarcastically said, “yes, of course…no!” My wife and I told him that was he was being extremely rude and that we were going to report his behavior to the general manager. We asked for his name, the manager’s business card, and went to our room. Later I went to our car to pick up the pack n play we had purchased that evening in case this happened. When I walked back into the lobby, I said “how sad”, referring to how disappointed we were with the lack of a pack n play that the hotel is supposed to supply and for how he handled the situation. He immediately threatened to call the police if I said one more word to him. I was extremely shocked by his threat since my wife and I had been very calm, reasonable, and well-mannered with our request, while also expressing our displeasure with him. I asked him why he would do that to us as a family with two small children. He said, “that’s it!” accused us of being rude and said we had 10 minutes to leave or the police were going to come and escort us out of the hotel. He also denied my request to speak to his manager, Janice, whom he was on the phone with at that moment. 15 minutes later, the police came to our room. We explained to them what happened. They agreed that we were being mistreated so they called Janice and told her how we should be allowed to stay at the hotel, especially considering how late it was for our children and how we had done nothing wrong. Janice refused and we were forced to leave. Hilton and the Hampton Inn Mesa Verde/Cortez should be ashamed to employ such rude and unprofessional employees like Carlos and Janice Christiansen. Their behavior was extremely repugnant and inexcusable.

This was our third stay here with our dog. The first two times were great. This time was awful. Our room was not clean. The toilet was dirty, the carpet was stained, the desk chair had a huge stain, the sofa smelled, the bed and pillows were lumpy. We were charged $50 extra for our dog. I don’t mind paying a pet fee, but $50 is ridiculous for a dirty room. We reported this to them, and have had zero response. We come thru Cortez often, but will not stay here again.

The good: the location of the hotel is actually better than I thought, about 15 minutes from the entrance to Mesa Verde National Park, and within minutes of a Walmart, Walgreens, and major grocery store. I usually like the Hampton Inns we've stayed in! But this....was not one of the brand's crown jewels, to say the least. Time for an upgrade. Nothing in the hotel worked: wifi was down for the 3 days we were there. The door to our bathroom didn't close. The remote control for the TV didn't work. Staying there for two nights was just very annoying. The breakfast was just plain AWFUL. You'd better like one of kind and flavor of yogurt and one kind of cereal, because that's all there was (the slots for two other cereal types were just empty). There were little kindergarten juice cups, instead of a real juice dispenser that would let you pour as much as you'd like. There were no containers of milk or a milk dispenser - just a pitcher sitting out on a warm counter. If you wanted to toast your bread, you'd better get in line because there was a single two-slice toaster for all the guests, and that toaster was broken. The handle on the depressor was broken off: you had to reach into the slot with your fingertips to grab the remaining piece of metal if you wanted toast. Hampton Inn is a big brand, and they know how to do it right when they want to. This was a poor excuse for a hotel.

Conveniently located right on the main road into town, and a great night of sleep! Staff was friendly, and the breakfast was typical. Nothing special, but most everything you’d need. The views of the mountains behind the hotel at sunset was a bonus!

Full Disclosure: One night stay, paid with points. Great location after a full day in Mesa Verde. Staff: Check in was fantastic. Clerk was super friendly and offered great advice on dinner and a place for breakfast the next day, which were both excellent. Room: The king room and bathroom were huge and very clean. The bed was comfortable and the shower had great pressure.

Clean rooms. Comfortable beds, etc. Wifi difficult to access but works OK once it connects. No clocks in room- what's up with that? Breakfast was good but no juice. Slightly less value considering the price of the room but not outrageous. Very friendly staff. Continue to defy wishes of most guests with no bar soap, no towel racks (just small hooks),etc. Was quiet.

Thank you for your review. Hilton has moved to wall mounted amenities in larger containers, for easier access for our guests and to reduce waste. We no longer are required to have clocks in our guest rooms, as cell phones have paved a new path for guests. We do offer wake up calls. Wishing you travels full of laughter and happy memories..
