Gokulam Homestay Kerala, a history in itself having a past of over three centuries of unaltered antiquity handed down generations who have made painstaking efforts to retain its regality. One can see century old panelings, murals and discreet modernisations without losing out on the ancient connotations. Located on a secluded island one gets the divine experience to tune in with nature and the pleasure of dreamy solitude. The calm and serene atmosphere with its panoramic view will leave one extremely mesmerized, being one of our major attractions.

Gokulam Heritage Homestay was referred by a friend, Arunkumar. The place is owned by his Aunt and managed by his Cousin, Anju; very pleasant and kind people. My Aunt and I stayed there for 2 nights and 2 days there. It was a wonderful place to relax, recuperate and reenergize. First of all, the food was amazingly delicious. We had breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the place - homemade food prepared by Aunty. We got the taste of all variety of dishes, including chatney (sauce), and they all have one common ingredient COCONUT. I love coconut so I didn't hesitate trying out every dish. Before going for a boat tour at the backwaters, we got a quick tour to their farm where they grow rice, vegetables, and fruits. Second, it was very homey. the yard was decorated with beautiful orchids and many tropical plants. There was a swing where I laid down for a few minutes listening to birds singing, but no other noise, no pollution, no tension, no worries. We did enjoy our stay very much and would love to visit again when opportunity presents.

The homestay arranged us a boat pick up when we went to the homestay from Alleppey and took the government ferry to Nedumudy – the trip took almost 2 hours but it was worth as the boat went on an exciting route: on small canals and lakes along small villages. Anjana and her family, the family running the homestay is very hospitable and sociable, we had exciting conversations about India, Kerala and the life of the family, during dinner in the evenings. One evening we also had the chance to join the family in the kitchen when all the 3 generations of the ladies in the family were cooking dinner for us. We tasted the delicious home made grape drink of the family that evening, too. Once the family also explained and showed us how to put on the sari. We were also shown around in the beautiful garden of the homestay by the family. When we were leaving, each of us was provided a fresh “goodbye” coconut. The whole family is really passionate about food, Anjana’s mom is a great cook, we had really delicious and authentic Keralan breakfasts, lunches and dinners; there was a big variety of food, we haven’t had the same dish twice during our stay; portions were more than enough; the meals consisted of several courses, at least from a European point view. Our favorite were the idly with coconut chutney for breakfast and the dish that was made from tapioca. Many ingredients of the food we got, such as fruits, vegetables and spices were grown in the garden of the homestay. The homestay is in an idyllic location, on the “corner” of River Manimala and a smaller canal in a village called Chathurthyakari. The building of the homestay is a traditional one and is 80 years old. The room we had (the homestay has 2 guest rooms) is huge and was clean with an attached bathroom – including an open-air shower. The homestay has a wonderful garden with flowers in front of the building and palm trees, coffee plants and different fruits (e.g. guava, chikoo, etc.), spices (e.g. cinnamon, pepper, etc.) and vegetables (e.g. lady finger) in the back. The homestay has its own rice paddy right behind the garden, too. Though Alleppey is around 12 kms away, transportation to and from the town is not an issue, the homestay arranged us a boat ride to cross the river and an autorickshaw ride to Alleppey from there, when we went for a punting canoe tour that started in Alleppey early in the morning. The area around the homestay is easy to explore on foot, you can walk along the river, the small canals and between the rice paddies and meet and talk to the local people living there, see e.g. how they go on the river and canals in their boats, wash their clothes and dishes in the water, etc. People are really friendly, they invited us to join their Hindu worship when we were passing by one of the temples of the village. We went also to the clothes shop of the village to do some shopping, twice, where we were treated really kindly. The homestay rented us bicycles – and can arrange motorbikes, too, if required. The day we rented the bicycles, we crossed the river on the government ferry to one of the neighboring islands and explored the southern part of the island called Chennamkery by bicycle, e.g. visited several churches and schools on the way. The homestay provides unlimited drinking water free of charge. To sum up, we truly recommend the homestay and the area for all those who want to get to know the authentic backwaters lifestyle, Keralan cuisine and culture.

The family were really welcoming and the food was the best we had in Kerala - beautiful home grown home cooked food, and very plentiful. The room was clean and spacious. We would definitely return here.

We've been Kerala to couple of times but this stay at a Kuttanad backwaters village will stay with us as a beautiful memory ever. Anjana and her family ensured we had a great stay on every aspect. The amazing food provided by them is the best kerala food we had ever. It's a perfect place for a family or a group of friends or even a solo traveller to unwind and watch the backwaters for hours. Visiting nearby tourist attractions is a waste of time except the Alleppey beach and house boats. Auto drivers usually try to over charge so choose buses wherever possible.

The Gokulam Homestay is a great place to relax, learn to understand Kerala life from its very friendly side - and most of all: you should stay for some time if you like to cook and eat. During our 4 days stay the owner and her mother happily gave introductions to understand the mix of spices, bread baking Alleppey style, the variety of fruits from the own garden - and how to use them for delicious sauces or drinks. As a family with two teenage daughters we had the two nice and clean homestay-rooms, always enjoyed a drink on the terrace with a view to the channel and liked starting and ending our trips with the short boat trip over it. Both generations liked that place enormously. Kerala at its best.
