My husband and I booked "Saffron Presidential Suite" for Dec 7th / 2017 for 1 night. It was the worst experience we have ever had. There is absolutely nothing positive to say about Spice Routes -Saffron. It is nothing like the pictures on the website. Food was terrible and I could tell that it was not fresh.....it was reheated over and over again. We hardly ate. Dining room was upstairs and nothing to hold on to to go up. I had to use both my hands and feet to go up. John, the guy in charge asked us what we wanted for dinner and we asked for fish and he tricked us and pocketed cash for himself. We stopped at a fish place to buy fish and we were charged over 2000+ rupees. John pocked more than half of that 2000 rupees. Furniture, floors, windows and kitchen all very dirty. The white lace curtains around the bed had turned brown from not washing. The guys on board were turning off the A/C repeatedly and it was like 100 degrees outside. Like I said before, please avoid Spice Routes. I did not write a review before because I was very upset and mad but now I feel I should let everyone know - no one deserves this type of experience. Lastly, it was a real challenge to get off at the end of the cruise. I have medical problems with my legs and I was asked to jump to get off and I said "No" !! Finally they moved the boat closer to land and I was able to get off with my husband's help. Also there was no Wifi as promised when booking. PLEASE AVOID SPICE ROUTES, KERELA INDIA

This review is of the Spice Routes company, operated by the name Akkarakalam Memoirs. We were on a boat called Spice Routes, Cardamon and Tamarind look to be of similar quality. We have just returned from a ‘luxury’ houseboat cruise on the ‘backwaters’ with Spice Routes. We booked via Agoda and ALL of the boats on their website were very very different to the huge floating neon monstrosity which we were placed on. The Spice Routes manager insisted we would still access smaller canals as the boat wasn’t too wide. This was false and we had to be transferred to a tiny little motorboat for 5hrs (with no toilet) to actually see any of the backwaters. Spice Routes think they are very savvy and take you on a route which looks like you are going to lots of different places, but as we had WiFi we were keeping track of the route on the map and hardly covered any distance at all, even travelling some of the same canals more than once. The Spice Routes captain on board insisted we would go on backwaters but when we kept asking they stated it would be later. It was only after kicking up a huge fuss did they arrange a small speedboat to take us around. The photographs on Agoda do not represent the neon lights and huge dining area and lack of any open space other than a narrow balcony. My advice to anyone looking at booking a houseboat, do not book through Agoda, nor book the Spice Routes company. Agoda falsely advertise through their images on their website. Spice Routes did not treat us with respect and lied to us throughout the trip. It was a lesson learned for five ladies who wanted some luxury, don’t use Agoda again and do a lot more research before booking. And never use Spice Routes.

My Indian friend surprised me with an overnight on a houseboat here. We were on the one named "Pepper." It was excellent. Two bedrooms and two baths. Hot water and a comfortable bed. Large and well appointed living and dining area all glassed in. The food was good. Being on the water in the houseboat was a fun experience. We saw some nice scenery along our way. We spend the night on the boat and then returned the next morning. It was a great experience that I would surely do again.

We were delighted by our stay on the Saffron houseboat. We stayed one night. We had a very good lunch, tea with some snacks at 5, an excellent dinner, and a nice breakfast the next morning. The rooms were cleaned, the huge bathroom has a big jacuzzi (we did not try it, since we spent the most time on the roof balcony watching the life on the river and its borders). The staff does its most to fulfill every needs and to make your cruise unforgetable. The balcony could be even a better place if an umbrella was provided.
