I needed to stay on the upper east side of Manhattan. Normally, I would stay just outside of this area at the Four Seasons on 57th street, however it was closed for restorations, so instead I chose The Carlyle on 76th and Madison. I really enjoy Rosewood hotels, having stayed at the Rosewood Mayakoba last August, which was wonderful. The Carlyle is not up to snuff. It was/is a NY institution, elegant, the choice of royalty. However, this is based on the past. The hotel needs a renovation, to pull it out of the 1980s. I was very surprised that during my entire time, there was only one person at the reception desk. She was lovely, but alone. This is supposed to be Rosewood’s NY hotel, and there is one person running things? Notice, I said reception desk, the concierge NEVER had someone manning the desk, not once. How is that possible? My next gripe, a mouse that we saw scurrying through Dowling’s at lunch! This encounter really upset my kids and we decided to go out for lunch. Positives? The housekeeping was very nice as they changed the sheets daily. Laundry, was another story, as I’m still waiting for laundry sent for same day service, two days later! The hotel needs a renovation and more staff. The place feels sleepy.…
The Carlyle has become our home away from home when visiting the City. The Staff, and the renovated property are outstanding. The level of service and VIP treatment adds a real touch of class. It was nice to see the hotel opening up the restaurant Dowlings and Bemelmans Bar both were amazing as always. Can’t go wrong staying at the Carlyle!
While we didn't stay at the hotel (we will next time), we went to see Tony Danza at the Cafe Carlyle Dinner Club. What a nice night!. Its an intimate setting with old school professional service, excellent food, and they really know how to make a great cocktail. Tony Danza was a special treat and didn't disappoint - what a showman. The Cafe has such a welcoming feeling. NYC used to have a wealth of such venues but they are only a few left. All I can say is the night was worth the price.
We had a great stay in a King Suite at the Carlyle. The hotel is exceptional and the rooms are large by NYC standards. The biggest standout, however, is the staff. Everyone we encountered - from the bellmen to the front desk staff to the housekeepers were exceptional.
As a former New Yorker, I don't relish room and board in NYC on trips back. But at the Carlyle, I feel like I'm coming home to my very chic apartment. The views are fabulous and proxiemty to the park is ideal for my children. Plus, all my friends will travel to see for a drink at Bemelmans. This is one Grande Dame where the service actaully delivers - Director of Front Services Mustafa Sukkar is a complete natural, with a suavenss and ease that carries no pretense or force.
the hotel is a bit tired and service is mediocre. Check in was friendly but no rooming was offered. The bathroom in the room was too small for luxury hotel standards. You can see it is a Hotel that lives from its past grandeur but did not do anything to keep up.
I found The Carlyle to be wonderful in every way--the room was spacious, well-appointed, and comfortable; the staff was attentive to small details (sending up more fresh figs when I mentioned that they were good); the food was excellent; and Bemelmens Bar was a magnificent experience. We enjoyed it so much that we'll be back in a few months.
The carlyle is an institution but is mainly resting on past glory at this stage. Don’t expect much service unless you are a celebrity. Rooms have been recently renovated and had an outstanding shower, tv, and coffee machine. It was a very comfortable room but just had a view of a wall and the other rooms opposite could easily see in which was a bit disturbing. The bar is well worth visiting despite the gruff welcome from the actual barmen.
This vorable hotel has had its ups and downs, with some rooms renovated beautifully and others still untouched, but all in all, with its beautiful bar, its perfect location, its exceptional service, and its great views, plus almost needless to say, its remarkable heritage, this remains my hotel of choice. Prices for everything are steep, but then so are they in many other luxury hotels in New York. And if you can post the feel of a home away from home as does this establishment.
The staff was very personable and lovely, but the room, 2101, needs a serious upgrade! Carpet frayed throughout room, paint cracking and pealing, and furniture and bathroom also in need of renovations. Certainly question the overpricing of my stay, but I guess it’s because of the Carlyle name.
