Not the worst I have ever stayed in, however the worst were in India. Pros. Price very cheap for NYC. Location was really good. Near subway, buses and short walk to Central Park. Staff worked hard and were helpful. Cons. Bed had a very thin mattress, did sleep reasonably well as made sure I was exhausted by the time we got back every night, we stayed 5!. Bunk bed didn't squeak which was a change from other hostels we stayed in. Cleanliness could be better. Looked like bathroom had been refurbished and some effort was made to keep it clean. Hallways, landings need a deep clean. Lift worked though a bit rickety, only on first floor so walked most of the time. WiFi only available in reception. You pay a refundable deposit for towels which were not really fit for purpose. Hostel buy some new ones. The majority of the residents were single males from all over the world so had a few interesting conversations, there were a couple of young females. I wouldn't stay again, would if it was totally refurbished if only for the location.…
The worst place I’ve ever stayed out. Beds are unbelievably uncomfortable, you have to share a bathroom with everyone else on your floor, door locking system doesn’t really work. Feels very unsafe, unsanitary. Please stay anywhere else.
Avoid this place like the plague. Like seriously, you might catch the plague here. The staff seem nice but they can’t do much to fix this mess. I arrived and was given a key to my door that didn’t work. Then was given two more keys to try and neither of those worked. Sooooo they don’t have control over the keys to their rooms, I guess?? That’s not a safety concern… The guy at the front desk was apologetic and moved me to another room. 4 floors up. The elevator is a nightmare and got stuck and felt like a ride in a haunted house. Hell nooo. The key to this new room also did not work. I jiggled it for a few minutes and the other lady who was already in the room eventually opened it for me. You guys. The rooms are dirty as hell. They look nothing like the listing. My bed did not have any sheets, and I’m glad it didn’t because I was able to plainly see how brown and stained and thin and gross both the mattress and pillow were. Nope, I’m done. Going back to the scary elevator, I passed by the bathroom which was filthy and had just an open shower with a thin shower curtain which just never feels safe as a solo female traveler. I also saw this other room in which the door was wide open and dark. I was curious so I tried to turn the light on and it didn’t work. Cool cool. And there’s a random ladder in there and some padding duct taped to a water pipe. I took a picture but sorry it’s blurry. At this point, I started RUNNING. I called an Uber, there was no way I was staying here. While I waited in the lobby for the Uber, the front desk guy was yelling at some guy to get off the property because he has previously sneaked into the hostel and went around trying different door handles to sleep in an empty bed…. Or do who knows what else. 😒 I slept at the airport instead and felt much safer there than this hostel. Please save yourself a terrible experience and go somewhere else. It’s unsafe, it’s not secure, and it’s not sanitary. I don’t know what else to tell you.…
August 2022. Would never spend another night at this hostel. Felt extremely unsafe; our door did not lock properly and felt like it could be pushed in. There is no security system, with no special access to the building and the ability for anyone to walk straight up the stairs to the rooms. The shared bathroom had a large window in it leading to an outside stair case that would not close making it feel like anyone could jump into the room. There was a whole in the wall of our room hidden by a damaged cabinet, we have no idea where it went too. Cleanliness is also a huge issue - the beds were itchy with bugs biting us (as well as uncomfortable with a metal beam across). Killed a beetle strolling across the floor of our room. Lots of trash from previous guests. Black mould in the corner by the radiator. The room and common area look nothing like the images on the website. I understand we did not pay a large amount for however the lack of safety is a huge concern for female travellers. It honestly felt scary and isolated, especially with people in the corridor shouting ‘open up’ and shouting coming from around the building, leading us to barricade the door. We originally booked and paid for 6 nights, after one sleepless night we are not staying. I would not recommend anyone staying here, yes it’s cheap and the location is ok (we didn’t get to explore fearful of leaving our belongings in the room), but honestly pay extra to know what you’re getting and safety. Don’t risk it.…
The hostel is in a good location, between the Central Park and the Hudson River. Also, there’s a subway station right next door. The downsides are: 1) the beds, which were, by far, the most uncomfortable thing I have lied on. 2) in a 7 days stay, my room was not cleaned once. The bed sheets weren’t changed either. 3) the overall cleaning of the whole place was bad. I spotted 3 little cockroaches in my room. During the first days of my stay I thought “ok, I can handle this.” But tbh by the end I was thanking god I was leaving.
We stayed one night in this hostel. The bed was really uncomfortable and the shower and the bathroom was really dirty. I think you pay too much for what you get. Luckily we were just one night there. The location is not bad.
Uncomfortable beds, dirty bathrooms, poor lightning in the room, extremely expensive for what you get. I’m giving two points because they have good service at the front desk and the location is very convenient.
I was stranded in NYC for a couple of days due to flight cancellations. This place was a perfect, cost effective way to manage the situation. There is a 24-7 front desk so I was able to quickly reserve online and check-in in the middle of the night. This was my first experience not only as a solo traveler, but my first stay at a Hostel so I didn’t know what to expect. I found the place to be clean and safe and the staff was friendly and helpful. There is no AC and no fan. I wish they at least offered a room fan, both for ventilation and to block out the night time construction street noise. It’s actually a relatively peaceful and quiet neighborhood in the upper west side, but the construction at night was noisy. It’s a short walk to Central Park and plenty of nice eateries around with a Dutch flare. If ever I’m in NYC again, I would have no issues with staying here. …
Worst experience of my life, this property is a total scam. The photos are not accurate to the condition of the rooms. When I checked in, I had to be moved 3 times due to other guests in the shared rooms not wanting to have another person. When I got settled into the final room, the heat was turned up so high that it was difficult to breath and there was some kind of burst pipe that caused an extremely loud whistling sound. I spoke with the front desk about it and they refused to look or acknowledge the problem, but offered to refund the money through Expedia which I booked through. I ended up sleeping on a bench in Central Park which was honestly better than staying here. After a week, I contacted Expedia because I was yet to receive the refund. I was told my refund for the nights I did not stay were denied due to the hostels policy. They lied to me and kept my $200. I urge everyone to stay away from this place unless you feel like getting ripped off.…
I booked a stay b/c there was literally no other options for hostel availability. The long flight of stairs at entry was a nightmare for luggage. Nobody at desk would lift a finger. The lobby was filthy with old dirty chairs. The elevator only fit 2 people or 1 w/ luggage. Upon entering elevator a large cockroach ran across the floor. The hallway to the room was both scary and dilapidated. The bedroom door was broken stayed ajar even locked. The bedroom had mold & dirt covered ceilings/walls. The sound of the heater all night was like nails on a chalkboard. I felt like I was in a horror flick. Avoid this place at all costs
