The latest Freehand in NYC’s Flatiron neighborhood opened in 2018. The Freehand takes over the former George Washington Hotel, which has a history as a home for creatives and is listed on the U.S National Register of Historic Places. Freehand New York is designed by Roman and Williams and features custom-commissioned artwork throughout the property as well as one of a kind murals in every guest room by Bard College students and alumni. As with all Freehands, Food and Beverage is of the utmost importance. Comodo opened in Oct 2021 with a Latin American inspired menu serving vibrant & bold flavors that invite you to get comfortable, let your guard down and enjoy. Broken Shaker, our award winning rooftop oasis, serves up specialty cocktails and yummy bites with beautiful skyline views of NYC. In November 2021, our mezzanine spaces were reconceptualized, refreshed and recharged. Enter Georgia Room and Bar Calico, inspired by iconic painter Georgia O’Keeffe-when in doubt dance it out.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Myself and four other British colleagues stayed at the hotel in November 2022 for a week during a work trip. The rooms were all nice and a good size and the beds were very comfortable. We had a good stay but unfortunately we all found the staff at reception at the breakfast counter consistently slow to help with easy to solve issues and sometimes discourteous to the point of being rude. This was very frustrating as we were often just asking for breakfast vouchers or for recommendations on the best way to get to New Jersey. The housekeeping team were very nice and even left me a handwritten happy birthday note one morning. The hotel has several bars and nightclubs attached to it so we found these visitors who were also staying at the hotel were loud late into the night over the weekend which might be an issue for some visitors. The general sullenness of the staff means we won't stay again when we return to NY and will find a nearby hotel with a warmer welcome and helpful attitude.

This is my fourth time staying at the Freehand in NYC and it gets better and better. Hotels in NYC are generally very expensive yet generic catering to either a business traveler with cold/opulent familiarity or a tourist with efficient crowdedness/cheapness. The Freehand is another type of hotel usually found in more creative travel destinations and feels like an artistic boutique. There are the young travelers, the Europeans on a budget and the occasional business type all mingling in a fantastic building in the Flatiron district. The hotel is filled with art from young artists with murals of the walls in the old New York style that no longer survives elsewhere. The best part of the hotel is its staff! One can tell that they have worked together for a while and enjoy being there and helping guests and each other. A particular mention is Javier, a most charming host at the front desk who is both courteous and professional. The type of concierge that has been priced out of all but the most expensive hotels in the world. Bravi!

Hi, Wanted to let you know that hotel tonight only refunded me 2 nights I stayed at the hotel with no hot water. I checked into the hotel at 1:00am on October 26th. I proceeded to go to bed at that time. I woke at 7:30 and took a cold shower before work. I went to work after my cold shower. I returned to the hotel in the evening of the 26th and passed out from an exhaustive day. I woke again this morning (October 27th) at 7:30am. I took my second cold shower and decided to check out if the hotel. According to hoteltonight. I’m receiving a 2 night refund rather than 3. This is so disappointing. I would love to understand how you came to this resolution. At no time during my roughly 36 hour stay was I able to take a hot shower. Looking forward to hearing from you, Dylan

We booked Freehand in Feb for our October stay and requested a quiet room. Twice this was confirmed in a email from them. We arrived at 11pm (it has been a long day as was 4am UK time) to find we had a (very small) triple room on third floor directly above the bar. It was incredibly noisy, hoards of people queuing outside, hanging around outside and in reception/lifts, music blaring until gone 3am. It made for a very stressful night, not what you want on a short break when you'd want to be well rested. They moved us into a much quieter 15th floor room for the rest of our stay but I'd never stay here again as I'd worry I'd get one of the unbearably noisy rooms. A shame as it's in a great location.

We loved staying at the Freehand! Bed was comfortable, location was great and we loved the feel of the place. Cozier than a big chain hotel. Awesome to have a real quality bar and restaurant on the premises too. Javier gave us a complimentary upgrade to a corner king, which was a great surprise. Plenty of space and noise wasn’t bad in the 5th floor. My only constructive feedback was I wish the room had a little more lighting. Overall, definitely recommend and would come back!

Stayed at The Freehand NYC last week while I was there on business for the week. Was my 1st time staying at this boutique hotel chain and was so impressed by the hotel environment, the choices of lounges and restaurants inside but what REALLY IMPRESSED me was the amazing staff that was so friendly, accommodating and professional.. particularly with TJ who assisted me with a room upgrade for when my wife was joining me for the weekend and amazing restaurant recommendation (you must try Isabelle's on Park for amazing Italian cuisine!). We definitely loved our stay there and can't wait to return!

One of the worst stays I’ve had in NYC over the last 2 decades. Location in itself is the only thing we enjoyed. The hotel location is excellent. The hotel rooms are tiny and dark, the bathrooms are stark and microscopic. I’m equating this to an airplane bathroom. Goodluck trying to use the sink. The faucet nozzle is inches from touching the edge of the sink so naturally water goes everywhere—No shelving, no place to put your toiletries as there’s no counter or ledge..horrible for doing makeup/shaving etc. The street noise was so unbearable we didn’t sleep the full night. For $350+ a night for less the. 4 hours of sleep—I would’ve preferred to roll the dice and sleep in the park. Needless to say this was the first and last staying here and highly recommend you choose another spot to lay your head and spend your hard earned money.

While there’s so much do at the hotel, our prime location is a stone’s throw away from basically everything and a great starting point for some real urban exploration. This boutique hotel is located in the Nomad area of lower Manhattan in the the former George Washington hotel. Rooms vary but are on the small side with very small shower rooms. Everything was stylish and hip and very clean. All furnishings were built-in. The hotel has two nice dining establishments and a rooftop nightclub with a great view. The staff was unusually friendly and helpful, but reaching anyone by phone was impossible.
