My husband and I have say that several five star hotels; some of the best in the country. However the customer service here far exceeds anything we have experienced. Lydell At the front desk went out of his way several times to make our stay memorable and easy - whether it was giving a “key” to my three year to prevent a tantrum to waving hello on the street during his break to providing to us with great recommendation. Lydell truly went above and beyond which is why I am writing this review. There are SO many hotels downtown San Diego; we have stayed at many of them. However, the customer service here is what makes this hotel stand out among the rest. I highly recommend booking here as a result of the staff. They go out of their way to make your trip easy and fun for the entire family. (Also the barrier and other front ladies were also very friendly! I feel like this hotel needs to hive other businesses lessons in customer service!)

I keep coming back to this hotel because of its proximity to the Amtrak station in downtown San Diego. (It's only a couple of blocks.) It's very convenient when I take the train to San Diego -- or fly into San Diego. The airport city bus has a stop a couple of blocks from the hotel. It's only about 10 minutes to the airport. The hotel is also within walking distance of Little Italy and about a 20-minute walk from the more touristy Gas Lamp Quarter. It's, otherwise, on a quite street. I've stayed here before the pandemic, when I thought it was very nice--the decor, the club for Elite members, the restaurant--everything was wonderful. It seems to be slipping a bit with nothing open due to the pandemic. I was told there would be complimentary coffee in the lobby for Elite guests such as myself on my last visit there in November 2020. When I went to the bar area to ask for coffee in the morning, there was no one there. I waited and then finally asked the front desk if there was anyone working there. I was told the person had called in sick, and that was it. Like many hotels, they keep cutting down on services while attributing these cuts to the pandemic. I don't see how providing water and a coffee maker in each room, as they previously did, would be a health risk. Another time, in October 2020, I was upgraded to a larger room. I had a separate reservation for the second day due to a booking problem which I sorted out when I checked in. I was forced to switch to a smaller room for the second day. I was wondering if the hotel was really that busy, although it didn't seem that way. I'll never know. It just seemed very bizarre. Overall, it's still a nice property, and it's really convenient to Amtrak and the airport, but don't expect the four-star service, even though the front desk staff is courteous and professional.

I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights following Christmas. I booked 2 rooms for my kids and I because of the 25% off 2nd room promotion and half off the parking. Well the only thing I got was half off the parking, but DID NOT get the 25% off the 2nd room as I was promised. When I first checked in I mentioned this discount and the person said, "Oh yeah, that'll be given when you check out." I went downstairs to check out and mentioned this promotion again but was not given the 25% discount. It took forever to check me out so I thought the discount was being applied. It wasn't until I checked my credit card bill that I saw no discount. This was very frustrating. I also called Marriott Bonvoy customer service but they said they could not help me and to check with the hotel directly. It was too much going around trying to get the promised discount. Also, there are no coffee makers in the rooms, so I was told by the person that checked us in that there would be free coffee at the bar in the mornings ONLY. The 1st morning I went downstairs and was given free coffee, however the 2nd morning when I went down and asked for coffee, I was asked to pay. I told the bartender that I was a guest at the hotel and that I was told that the coffee was free. He told me that I "must've misunderstood." He said the coffee was only free if I was a "gold" member and on their list. Ha! This was sooo embarrassing. Then he asked me again what my method of payment would be. Last but not least, as to the parking, the parking for this hotel is an unguarded and dark ACE parking lot across the street in a very shady part of town. I was NOT comfortable leaving my vehicle there 2 nights in a row. Nonetheless, I DO NOT recommend this hotel. It's member service was horrible. As a Marriott hotel, the only thing charming about it is that it's in a historic building I guess? But there is NOTHING surrounding it except depilated government buildings and homeless people's tents on the sidewalks. Oh, and the rooms....the bedding is old and worn.

Dear Ms. mariavC3323XE, Thank you for choosing Hotel Republic on your recent stay with us. First and foremost I want to sincerely apologize for not exceeding your expectations this stay. We have received all your reviews on multiple review sites and appreciate you taking the time to share your experience as we appreciate all feedback to allow us to make improvements. In regards to your reservations you booked 1 room at the family escape package and another at a Marriott Bonvoy discount rate. To receive the 25% off 1 room both rooms needed to be booked at the family escape rate which is explained in the rate details. Sadly, we do not have coffee in the rooms currently, however, do sell coffee daily in trade. We do have complimentary coffee for our Club Lounge guests as this amenity is currently closed because of our current restrictions. Our amenity updates were emailed to you on 12/23 as well inside the welcome letter you received at check in. We are in the downtown area of San Diego in the financial district and close to many amenities including Little Italy and Gaslamp, however, many businesses remain closed or with limited hours which affects our downtown ambiance. Thank you again for choosing Hotel Republic and we have shared your experience with the hotel team and will be discussing your experience this week to make improvements in our operation to improve our overall guest experience as we did not meet your needs. It is our hope to welcome you back to Hotel Republic on a future visit to San Diego for a more enjoyable stay.

Very nice hotel. Good rooms. Decent common area. Some snafus with giving me the points they were supposed to give me, especially considering that some of the amenities / areas were closed / not operating.

The hotel used to be a W hotel and some pictures show a pool that no longer exists. Bummer! Otherwise the room was very comfortable. All employees and guests wore masks during COVID restrictions. I travelled during Halloween weekend. Close proximity to the USS Midway and any of those activities. Gas Lamp was a fairly quick walk to get to more restaurants and other night life. Little Italy was also walkable as well for me. Hotel bar and restaurant is mediocre and pricey. Unless you are doing it for convenience I would just take a walk and find something more enjoyable. Definitely would stay again as it was far enough away to be quiet but close enough to get to the action.
