My wife, kids, and I stayed on the 9th floor this past Saturday 6/25. We arrived and were helped with our bags. I self parked underground then went up to the 3rd floor to check in and here’s where things started to go South. I patiently waited for my turn as 3 individuals were being helped. Tired and exhausted retuning from the San Diego Zoo Safari, I didn’t hear when Jacqueline (think she also goes by Jackie) called me up. Instead of waiting she made a comment to the luggage porter and they both had a laugh. I felt humiliated as I walked up to the counter as she proceeded to help me. I wanted to hurry and get to my room at that point. Not the type of service you would expect from this type of establishment. This is a new hotel so the rooms were very nice as expected. We all got ready and as we were leaving the room I noticed the outside door handle was very loose. I called the front desk and was told they would send a service tech to fix it. 2 calls and 30 minutes later a nice gentleman arrived and assured me he would fix the door handle and shut the door. 30 minutes lost that I could’ve spent with my family at the pool on vacation. I got to the pool and immediately ordered drinks for my wife and I. Her Rose was brought from the main bar and my Mule was made in a split second. The Mule was so watered down that I tasted no alcohol and only water. If it had been made right I would’ve tasted the Tito’s Vodka and Ginger Beer. At that point I decided not to order any more drinks although we spent over an hour at the pool. Had the initial drinks been made correctly I would’ve easily spent $150 bucks on drinks. After the pool we got back to our room, changed for the evening, and although we’d prefer to go to Del Friscos at the hotel, the kids wanted ton to go to Carnitas Snack Shack across the street. The food there was good. The location of this hotel is unbeatable. I truly hope my next stay is nothing like this one but I can honestly say my expectations of what the Intercontinental brand experience should’ve been we’re not met. Very unfortunate. I don’t know if we will stay here again. We love San Diego and visit very often.…
We stayed for 4 nights recently at this Intercontinental right on the Bay by USS Midway. We had booked a Club room and were pleasantly surprised to walk in to a one bedroom suite with floor to ceiling windows and excellent views right along the bay. It came with a sitting room and a bedroom, each with its own TV and bathroom. There's a walk-in shower, coffee machine, safe and so on. The Club lounge has indoor and outdoor seating areas and serves up a limited hot breakfast in the morning along with snacks in the evening. There's beer and wine on tap too. The staff were excellent. It's an easy walk to USS Midway and the bay cruise boats while Little Italy and Gaslamp are also walkable. We self parked a rental car for one night in the underground garage although valet parking is available too. During our stay we found staff throughout the hotel to be friendly and cheerful.Couldn't have had a better first visit to San Diego really.…
Great staff, clean, new comfortable rooms. This is the best choice in “downtown” San Diego proper as there are not any “five star” options. This is just on the edge of downtown on the bay and is a really great location. Great General Manager. I’ve stayed here twice and would stay here again.
I stayed here with my husband mid week in May 2022. The location is so convenient with USS Midway across the street and nearby restaurants. The staff was so welcoming at check in, check out, Vistal bar. The guest rooms-one word, amazing. Not your typical small city room. The room was spacious and well-appointed. I look forward to staying again in the future. Would definitely recommend this hotel.
I was here for a conference and decided to extend my stay because it was my birthday weekend. Terrible decision - I wish I’d known what poor service the Intercontinental offered before I spent nearly $1000 adding on two nights. The front desk staff never answered when I called from my room, made numerous mistakes on my reservations that required a significant amount of work on my part to fix, didn’t seem to understand how their own reservation system worked, and didn’t offer nearly as many amenities as they should have for nearly $400 a night. I will be informing everyone I know to stay elsewhere if they’re in San Diego. Disappointing. I was excited to come to San Diego and they made my trip a really negative one.
The difficulty experienced by the hospitality industry during the Covid-19 pandemic is regrettable but no excuse for the drop in standards coupled with aggressive pricing at this hotel. It started at checkin where the staff attitude was nonplussed to say the least. I don’t need the ‘Thanks for being a Spire Ambassador (now Diamond) member’ speech, and it positively embarrasses my wife but it’s the first time I’ve noticed the absence of it, and I’ve been an Ambassador member since 2005. I asked if we’d got my upgrade and was informed that we had but when we got to the upgraded room it was at the city end of the hotel and not a Harbour View room. I’d booked a Premium Harbour View room at extra cost as opposed to Premium City View Room or Premium Room. Why ‘upgrade’ me to a marginally bigger City View room? Clearly I wanted to lookout over the harbour! So I declined the upgrade and was moved back to what they said was Premium Harbour View room but I had to dispute that. Sure we could see a corner of the bay and the Airport, and believe we could hear the airport big time! At checkin we were not offered assistance with our luggage of 2 large cases and 2 smaller cases plus hand luggage. I’m a young looking 72yo and my wife not much younger. We would have declined as that’s what we do, but nevertheless…. Come on IGH!! Having changed our booking from the Holiday Inn Bay View only two weeks before our holiday I had to accept the $625 price tag for the room and from my regular experience of Intercontinental Hotels this should have been OK. Big mistake! I compounded the mistake at checkin by paying an additional $50 each for Lounge Access, now $725 per night. Bigger Mistake! The (Premium) room. The overall feel was sterile,…or was that minimalist? No Ambassador welcome gift/fruit bowl. Chaise Lounge in the window but no table and chairs. No mirror over counter knee hole for making-up. Small TV for a premium room with no streaming facility. Room make-up had to be booked. No problem, we make our own bed and tidy up at home, but we’d just come from the Kimpton Shorebreak at Huntington Beach where they gave us 1000 amenity points for every night we declined room make-up. 3000 points thank you very much! Plastic tumblers in bathroom and paper cups in room for hot drinks, but I’ve seen this at other IHG properties recently. Call it the Covid effect. Must maintain shareholder dividends at the expense of the paying customer! The ($50 per person per day) lounge Breakfast, adequate at best Evening Canapés, meagre at best. Beer on tap - that’s OK. Wine on tap - really? I had to pour off two glasses of white before I got a chilled glass. No Spirits. Glass wine glasses - Yay! Plastic tumblers for fruit juices and soft drinks. At the end of our stay I went to reception and asked to speak to the Duty Manager about our experience. Eventually a young man with questionable communication skills beckoned me over and I invited him to sit down with me so I could feed back our experience. I honestly do not think he was the duty manager. The lady who told me she was the deputy Reception Manager, whose hip worn name badge was covered up, seemed to have far more authority and was not wearing uniform like all other reception staff and the young man sent to meet me. About the room mix-up he admitted that IHG are reviewing the room naming. Pre-covid I regularly stayed at the Intercontinental Grand Stanford in Hong Kong. They have ‘Side Harbour View’ and ‘Full Harbour View’ rooms. Come on IGH, it’s not rocket science! Anyway all he offered to do was feed my comments back, which was possibly all he could do in his position.. About me I’m a company owner of 40 years and globetrotting business man, English by birth and English by nature. I’m always polite as I find that gets the best out of people. I’ve been loyal to IHG for at least 30 years and since I started global travel an IHG Ambassador for 17 years. Therefore I feel I have a qualified opinion. If someone like me makes comments like I have in this review then in my opinion someone at IHG needs to sit up and take note. Oh, and by the way Ms Deputy reception Manager, did I get the promised amenity points you authorised to the receptionist at checkin to compensate for me rejecting the room upgrade?…
We had a 3 night stay here. The room was somewhat disappointing, some maintenance issues in the room and the smoke detector shill having the plastic bag over it. The staff were helpful, but overall the stay felt to be missing something, not having the level of plushness I have always experienced at past IC stays.
We really enjoyed our stay at the InterContinental San Diego. The location is great, within easy walking distance of several really good restaurants. Housekeeping was good, we were able to request how frequently we wanted it and within a 2-hour time frame. Incredible views from the windows. And even though it is a small thing, appreciated the note taped to our door welcoming us to the hotel. There are a lot of options to stay within San Diego and we decided that this is our go-to place.
My wife and I booked a 2 night stay for a quick Romantic getaway. Having previously stayed in the Gaslamp area in the past, we opted to stay over here this time. Since we flew in and it’s close proximity to everything, we opted to not rent a car. The hotel is a very quick 5-10 minute Uber/Lyft ride depending on traffic. The hotel is ideally located across the street from the water, is a 5 minute walk to the USS Midway, and is situated near shops, restaurants, coffee shops, and depending on when you stay, the farmers market in Little Italy (definitely worth a visit). If you want to visit the Gaslamp quarter, it is an easy 20 minute walk to access. At check in my platinum elite status with IHG was recognized and we were given a high floor with partial water views, but that was about it. The room was very nice and modern with all of the convenient options such as outlets and plus for usb at the desk and bed side. The on site restaurant was very good for breakfast as well. Definitely recommend this property and would stay here again.…
Stayed here for 2 nights. The front desk was incredibly helpful and friendly. Damian?, not sure about name, was very nice and a pleasure to work with. The room was very clean and quiet. Had the best night's sleep. The pillows were so comfortable that when we got home we bought some for ourselves!
