Pro: lot's of sunshine Cons: this is a hostel that call itself as a surfer hostel. I know surf hostels, I've stayed at so many other surf hostels including in Bali and all of the Hawaiian Islands (my second home) and all of them were cleaner than this place. bathroom in the room is super tiny (literally) with dripping (yes, dripping) low water pressure. the other two bathrooms in the common areas are both not so much different. noise all over the hostel, not from people having conversation but from the music by the coworking guys who lives there.

Worst mistake booking a room at this place, highly misleading rate and environment advertised on website, I’ve stayed in hostels around the globe with awesome experiences, but this is not one of them. One big party flop house with absolutely no class but plenty of both loud music and young drunks. Its nothing more than an overpriced, rundown shack on the beach. $200/night is what I paid to step into an episode of Jersey Shore! If you’re looking for a little R&R on beautiful Pacific beach, look elsewhere because you will not find it here. Beach Cottages across the street are your best bet. Same rate for a much better beach atmosphere and relaxing experience.

Me and some friends found this place last minute and booked it same day. The staff and occupants were all very friendly and being located right on the boardwalk there were plenty of options for food, fun and more. Would most definitely stay here again, can’t recommend this place enough.

Just had a wonderful night's stay last Wednesday. Fellow older travelers - they say everyone's entitled to an opinion, but please don't book here for the lower rates and then rage that you didn't find a shiny new Hampton Inn with smart, chirpy business managers lined up for you! Some of the criticisms here may be factually true, but you have to realize the beauty of this place is that it is more of a primitive beach shack than a hotel. I took a private room as I didn't want to foist myself on the college age guests - no TV (you have to visit the TV room they have if you want). Security is really basic - the ceiling is covered with bamboo and a wall fan bolted above the bed if you need - but there was something soothing about the wind blowing through the open windows and the roar of the breakers all night. Late that night, went to the sundeck where someone was playing guitar to a group of guests. The staff are friendly and laid back - and I mean laid back! Again, please don't stay here for the price - there are plenty of places around Pacific Beach and San Diego to get standard hotel service. the Beach Bungalow Surf Hostel - if you can enter the spirit of it - is just a very nice escape - from COVID, from politics, from work or the worry of getting work now. It really felt more like I was in a remote place in Mexico than downtown San Diego. Also, no shortage of fantastic clubs and rooftop restaurants within a very short walking distance!
