Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

My first time staying at this hotel after really wanting to stay at Pacific Beach but never having the opportunity to do so during several past San Diego vacations. This was a wonderful stay and just what I needed to get away. Now keep in mind this is a traditional style beachfront hotel/motel in that the room will in some way face towards the ocean...with entry from an outside corridor. The bonus is that you're right on the boardwalk when you step out of the hotel. Some rooms if not most will catch a glimpse of the ocean and sunset. Just very relaxing in a central Pacific Beach location. First things first, big props to the wonderful staff - in particular, Stephanie and Mercedes at the front desk were a joy to interact with. As I had a standard King room and it was a little bit of an off-peak time, Stephanie was able to accommodate my request for a non-stop floor room. Just really nice people who have a lot of passion for their jobs - and especially ensuring that guest experience is a great one. I travel quite a bit for leisure, and you notice. As far as the room, keep in mind that it is relatively basic because it fronts a beach. Carpeting, furniture, etc. may not look impressive at first glance, but it's because of the functionality. Everything was very clean and well kept, nice amenities with moderate refrigerator and a cooler fan. The bed was extremely comfortable; only possible negatives were varying hot / cold water and noisy housekeeping carts early. That said, this was a very comfortable stay. As far as the area and restaurants, lots of eateries and options nearby. Of course, attached to the hotel is the World Famous seafood restaurant - with great eats and also a very underrated happy hour menu with exceptional food options. There's also a Ralph's / Krogers nearby. And of course, the sunsets literally right before you every night. For those using public transit, this hotel is extremely easy to get to and from. From the airport, the free shuttle to Old Town will connect you with a bus that takes not even 20 minutes. I did a day trip to La Jolla via bus maybe a block away. Lots of options if you want to venture from Pacific Beach. Loved this hotel and will be back in early April again. Had thought about staying at a slightly north nearby hotel, but the great service and experience makes this one of my favorites.

Entire three nights stay was blissful. Spectacular view of mother nature at its finest. This by far is the best location to stay when coming for the beach. I am a native was born in Long Beach, Calif. $30 ride from the airport. Once checked in, most everything in the role your heart desires is within walking distance. And for those who are money conscious this is the best value. Definitely a place to say if you want to ground and reconnect. Staff was amazing. Hats off to Stephanie, Tim the night guy / maintenance man! They even have their own laundry with the key card for privacy and security 💚🙏🐉

The Surfer Hotel was very clean and well prepared. It wasn’t huge you are paying for the view which is worth the price. The staff was great very helpful and gladly helped us with all our needs. They have a parking lot that you pay to use. The $37 parking pass in the hotel parking lot was a little pricey but it sure was nice being able to come and go and always have a parking spot. There was never any free street parking available. It was a great stay we will stay there again when ever we visit San Diego.

First of all this is a huge 2 bedroom apartment. Full view of the ocean. Clean. Comfortable bed and pillows and couches. Connected to a fantastic restaurant. Full kitchen for cooking. The deck is the absolute best part for sunrise and sunset. Full dining area too. The staff is so friendly and helpful.

We have been coming to the Surfer Beach hotel for over 20 years. We stay about 4 times a year sometimes it’s just my husband and myself and sometimes we bring our family with multiple rooms. No matter who we go with it’s always a wonderful experience. The staff is amazing and you can’t beat the location and views from each room. We often stay in the 2 bedroom apartment with its huge private balcony, full kitchen and living room. Each time we check out we always look ahead to the next trip there! Irene H.

I don’t know what took me so long to book a stay here at Surfer Beach! My family and I have been coming to Mission Beach for over 10 years now. We always seem to stay at Blue Sea Beach, now called The Wayferer, or at a BNB. We are so happy there was availability this time around though, at Surfer Beach! Lillian at the front desk was extremely helpful and kind! She greeted me with a friendly smile as soon as I walked in and went above and beyond to give me the best stay possible! Even got a room upgrade and early check in!! The beds are super soft and the room was nice and clean, all around! Love the vibe of the whole place!! Cannot wait to book enough in advance next time so we can be sure to score another stay at Surfer Beach, maybe in the Sunset Suite!!
