First thing to point out: Realize this is a 2 star hotel and an older building. You won't get modern, or a bunch of amenities. (Note: No A/C here, but small fan provided in room) Here is why it was perfect for us: 1. It's a block from Union Square and short walking distance to transportation 2. In-house pub with great & inexpensive food/drink 3. Great price, continental breakfast included (not Keto friendly though lol) 3. Mini bar in room super affordable 4. Clean 5. Friendly staff Things that could've made it a little better but were very minor to us: Room was next to elevator. Somewhat noisy but not as bad as someone described on here. Pedestal sinks, no vanity/room for toiletries in bathrooms. But nothing that annoyed us to let it affect my overall rating. We felt right at home there after a couple of days. I loved having the White Horse Tavern in the hotel! Super convenient and loved the ambiance overall. I will definitely book this property again when we come back to SF!

Room Tip: Would probably ask for a room not close to elevator or front of building due to traffic noise.

Good size room with soft double beds. Bathroom was basic, conditioner was lovely and toiletries replaced daily. Loads of towels, spare blankets etc. We were able to put our own bits in the fridge. Our room was next to the lift, we could hear it from the bathroom but not the bedroom so not a problem. Not a lot of hanging space but we didn’t use it at all. Hotel was a short walk from Powell station, all uphill. We were able to walk to Fisherman’s Wharf and Oracle Park, Union Square and Macey’s was only a few minutes walk away. The breakfast was a bit hit and miss. The attached bar was very reasonably priced and food portions were enormous. Staff were all very friendly and helpful.

Our stay was for 8 nights so we really got to know the hotel. Location is fantastic. You can walk to Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf and Union Square is only about 2 1/2 blocks away. Rooms are on the small side but the beds were comfortable. No air conditioning but at this time of year, you don’t need it. The hotel was clean although furniture needs recovering in the lobby and in the lounge room. The continental breakfast was adequate. It consisted of mini croissants, jam, butter, muffins, filled pastries, 2 cereals, bananas, apples and grapes, milk and coffee. I think they should offer a toaster, bread and peanut butter which would be more economical for the hotel but a little less sweet for the guests. The mini bar was an honour bar so the hotel relies on its guests to remember what they consumed. Items were very reasonably priced. The Whitehorse Pub opens at 5:00 pm and makes excellent food at a decent price. Overall a great stay.

The room was large. Rooms with odd numbers had a nice view. Very nice hallways and stairs. You can use the refrigerator that has drinks for sale to refrigerate some personal items because it is a regular mini-frig, not one that when you move an item, you get billed for it. The shower had copious hot water - it's an old building and I was on the 6th floor so it could have been abysmal. Valet parking was expensive (about $43/night) but considering that the cost of the room was so reasonable, I did not mind. Location was very good. Hotels right up the street were going for $400 more/night. Rooms with even numbers (mine was 604) had view of a wall. Bathroom offered little privacy, one fluorescent light. I had to borrow a hair dryer from the front desk. There is no in-room coffee/tea; I like to drink chamomile tea at night. About 30% of TV channels had poor reception; very limited channel selection. Continental breakfast was a real let-down - OJ, coffee/tea, two cereals, muffins, apples & grapes. No toast/toaster, no bagels/cream cheese, no bananas/strawberries for cereal, no oatmeal/anything hot. It takes about 30 minutes to get your car from valet.

I stayed here a short time in February 2020. Was very impressed with the cleanliness and how well kept the hotel was. It's has an old fasion appearance and quietness that's very appealing. Staff as a rule is very nice and helpful. One member of the staff, I overheard saying, " I don't know if I'd let that old man stay here", or words to that effect, as I went to my room. The room used proximity key card which was pleasant to use. the room was extremely clean and well kept. That alone for an older hotel was impressive. On the down side, there was no microwave, at least in my room. The somewhat small TV, had grainy / fuzzy picture. You hear people outside a little and doors being slammed, but for the most part it was quiet. They offer a shuttle service, through a private company for about $19 total. Because I didn't have to walk to the BART, I took their service. The shuttle, van, had two people in it, when it arrived no problem. But the van was older and just kind of rickety, didn't offer a smooth ride at all, ride was bumpy and unpleasant. A bit better than riding the BART. Driver was very cordial. You pay him the finished balance of the shuttle ride. Drops you off directly in front of your airline. I would stay here again because of the price, but if a similar hotel with a microwave were available, and as centric, I would move. Its on a slight hill but not steep at all. ''
