InterContinental San Francisco is the Bay Area's upscale landmark hotel destination. The 32-story glass tower sparkles high above the city, standing sentry over the South of Market (SoMa) area. The smoke-free hotel is convenient to everything, including the Moscone Convention Center, Union Square, Chinatown and the Powell Street Cable Car Turnaround.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

When we arrived, the room was not yet available. During check-in, we had to wait over an hour before we got a room, even though they knew the previous guest hadn't even left yet. Eventually we got an "upgrade". In this case, the upgrade was basically a worse room. The room was actually a handicapped room, only just a little more spacious than a regular room. However, the room (#602) was located in such a way that the curtains could not be kept open because there was a public balcony right behind the window. There was also noise and smoke from the balcony. Do not accept this room if it is offered to you as an upgrade.

Hotel's Favourite
After living in San Francisco for 25 years, it is always a treat to return to visit family and friends. We made our reservations at the InterContinental San Francisco and it did not disappoint. The customer service was 5 star and the staff are exceptional, from the front desk with Bill and David to the bell staff we were treated as if we were the only guest in the hotel. We had drinks at the Bar 888 and the staff could not have been more engaging and nice, not to mention the drinks were delicious. We selected the internet and parking package which we found to be a great value. Our room was on the 19th floor with views of the Bay. Our room had an automatic shade that lowered the blinds and kept the room dark enough for us to sleep in the next morning. The room was spacious and very well appointed. The hotel and our room were very clean and they follow all the recommended Covid guidelines. While San Francisco has been in the news for crime, we felt very safe in the area and walking at night near the hotel. My only negative is they charge for local calls, the instructions for valet parking had a local number to call. They charged us about $2.00 for a local call, when we return we won't make that mistake again. We look forward to our next visit!!

I stay at lots of Intercontinental hotels. And this had been one of my favorites of the bunch. But no more. When I got in bed to go to sleep, I immediately noticed a strong odor of cat urine on the mattress. It was tough to bear, and thought about asking to switch rooms right then, but it was 11 pm. First thing the next morning, I asked to switch rooms, and the front desk people were very accommodating. The following morning, I had breakfast in the restaurant, and when the server put my plate in front of me, I noticed a large hair -- at least 8 inches long -- splayed across my scrambled eggs. When I pointed it out, the server apologized, brought me a replacement. And he comped the meal, which I appreciated. But there were also other indications of neglect: the exterior windows were very dirty, which is a problem since the hotel markets (and charges extra for views) and several machines in the workout room were broken.

We had a really pleasant stay in a king room with a good view out to the city skyline. The room was large, lots of convenient touches like USB charging ports bedside and remote controlled blinds, and the staff were fantastic with little requests like borrowing a pair of scissors. The hotel gym is really well equipped and has modern machines. Will definitely be back on my next stay in San Fran!

We booked this hotel on a whim and it ended up being perfect for us. Very convenient location to Muni stops, shopping, and other attractions. Rooms were pretty small but well appointed and I loved the views (and electric window shades.) The brunch was everything I'd missed from a high-end hotel brunch during covid. Pool was a little too crowded for us to enjoy but there are very few pools in the area so if that's a priority, it will do. Staff was extremely helpful and enhanced our stay. If you are skittish about seeing people living on the street the location might feel a little dicey for you but coming from LA, this is pretty normal for us and for many big cities right now. Trains and public transit stations were disgusting and in far worse condition than my last visit but that is not the fault of the Intercontinental and they do a great job maintaining the property and upholding the brand's excellence. I wish they had queen beds instead of full size but the rooms are on the small side so we made it work.

Our 5 night stay was comfortable and enjoyable. The front desk staff were very accommodating on checkin, ensuring our suite met our needs. And, the room itself was perfectly fine: clean, stocked and comfortable. We enjoyed a few good meals and drinks at the Bar lounge. The food was surprisingly pretty decent for hotel food! Yes, the area seems a little ‘sketchy’ but we actually felt quite safe and went out to several local bars and restaurants in the evenings with no problems.

I recently booked a 3 day stay at the Intercontinental San Francisco from 2 – 5 July. I am a Diamond Ambassador with IHG and was using a complimentary Weekend night rate. I arrived early evening on 2 July after a 13 hour flight from New Zealand. I had to manhandle my baggage through the front door, there were people at the bellhop desk deep in conversation with each other, no help from them even though they couldn’t help seeing me trying to get through the door with my bags. I got in the queue for check in and after a short wait I was attended to by an agent.. Disappointingly there was absolutely no Ambassador experience from the time I arrived till the time I left the hotel. The check inn process was very ho-hum, no explaining the restaurant times, hotel facilities etc. There was no welcome as an Ambassador member, I wasn’t advised of any stay enhancements, no offer of restaurant / bar credit, no room upgrade, no lounge privileges. It’s like they had completely forgotten I was a Diamond Ambassador. But most of all I found the staff to be quite “off”, with never any acknowledgement, smile or greeting apart from a housemaid who was nice one day and grumpy the next. My bill on departing was wrong as the free weekend night had been charged to my account, luckily I did check the bill, although this issue was attended to quickly by the agent with the assistance of her manager. I even noticed homeless people coming in to use the bathroom facilities. I know its not a fault of the hotel but the neighbourhood is now sketcky. I had to zig zag my way down the street from the Powell Street Bart Station avoiding homeless people passed out on the street, poo, the smell of urine and E scooters scattered all over the place. Overall, I am disappointed with my stay at Intercontinental San Francisco, I alternate between this hotel and Mark Hopkins so I know where I will be staying next time in the city. If you are staying as an Ambassador member, make sure you get everything you are entitled to.

I stay here every year during Thanksgiving. The rooms are nice, the staff is pleasant and it is a great location within walking distance of great restaurants and shopping areas. I would recommend though that you park across the street or around the corner as parking at the hotel is $60 a day

The management and service at this hotel is exceptional, even among the IC brand. Raymond and Tyler personally assisted me in making a booking and ensuring I received the room features I was looking for, and the front desk staff were able to accomodate requests that made our stay extra special. The hotel is modern with electronic shades, great views, and friendly staff. Stay here for the service and you won't be disappointed.
