Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We had the worst stay of our lives. The place is disgustingly dirty: bad smells, stained sheets, moldy bathrooms, rodents in the kitchen etc etc. The area is a very unsafe part of San Francisco. There seems to be a whole crowd of people staying here on the long term and essentially living here. On our first night, we were awoken at 1 am by a drunk woman threatening us with violence. The manager reluctantly allowed us to change rooms. We were not given any kind of compensation. Please, please, do yourself a favour and go to another hostel. Some of the nicer (normal) ones include the Green Tortoise Hostel (for maybe $10 extra a night - but totally worth it) and the Pacific Tradewind Hostel. Just don't stay here!

Terrible place, dirty, unsafe, kitchen is a terrible mess ... The photos available on the website are really not accurate !!! During the night you will hear homeless and drugged people yelling (or fight in the corridors of the hostel, but as said the manager "It happens everywhere"). The commun places smell really bad, the shared bathroom has no soap and toilet paper ... Make you a favor, don't stay there ! Maybe you will pay a little bit more but you will surely feel better elsewhere ! For those who don't know San Francisco, you will immediately (but too late) realize that this establishement is located in the most dangerous and unsafe district of San Francisco ! (Tenderloin, Mission street ....) There are even people that are in charge of the safety of people walking down the street ! ( from 7am til 7pm) They clearly said that it is better to just not got out after 7pm ... Meaning that if you stay in this hostel (and this district) you have traveled to Sanf Francisco just to stay in a creepy room after 7pm ... What a nice trip !

So first of all, trip advisor needs a negative rating.Giving a zero to this place would be a disservice. Even if you are broke and can’t afford do NOT come here!!!!! The Asian manager Hassan was arrogant and couldn’t care less about providing us with a room but he was ready to call us an Uber. The whole place reeked of weed and meth and god knows what else. If unhygienic had a standard this would be the the creme of the crop. It ticks off all the unhygienic standards with dirt littered all over the place. Very very small rooms with disgusting bathrooms. I feared I might get an infection or two if I stayed there more than a night. Couldn’t make it past a day even and booked to a nicer place which cost a little more. SAVED MY SANITY!!!

+ good location + comfortable beds -+ quite enough toilets and showers, usually you didn't have to wait for any - 4 person room was quite small - very stuffy & hot because of no air conditioning but there is no air conditioning in San Francisco at all so that's why I forgive them ;P - not very clean showers - some of the showers without doors

I would not recommend this for people whose main priority is comfort. I guess the only thing i like about this hotel is the wifi because it worked perfect when i was there. The place is a bit dirty. There is a strange smell. Not a good neighbourhood but the staff were helpful. The location is near the metro, but a lot of homeless people around. Just be cautious. Only good for an overnight stay. Just a place to sleep.

I stayed at the European guest house in San Francisco last weekend for Metallica’s concert and all I can say is great staff and great location if you’re not a picky traveler you can easily stay here affordable price and you get what you pay for: decent bed and decent bathrooms. Manager helped me a lot during my stayed, it was a busy weekend so was almost completely booked but he found me always a bed for me. It’s not a five star hotel so do not expect that, homeless people around that city area but as all around the world if you don’t mess with them they don’t mess with you. I’ll be back next time in San Fran. Thank you staff!!’

This place is situated in a really dangerous area where tourists are targeted by local homeless. The area is full of homeless people and is very dangerous at night. Plus the local Bart is the Civic Centre and people are followed from the station. That aside this is the worst place I have ever stayed. It is filthy. When I arrived I asked to see the room and he laughed saying you have to pay. Anyway and SFO is full. I thought she was a really oh noxious reply. The showers toilets and kitchen is filthy. The carpets are disgusting. I booked a single room and it was shockingly bad. I have travelled all over the world and this was without a doubt the worst place I have ever stayed. I left the next morning and paid six dollars a night more for an amazing place which is more central. This place needs to be closed down.

The place need to be controlled. It is very dirty from the room to the showers (very few, shower doors missing, cold water in one (I tried 3 to get a shower!!) and so dirty!). At the check in, they gave me a blanket which hasn’t been cleaned, with white stains and hairs all over it! When we came back, our bed was occupied! It was too late we both slept together in 1 bed. Next morning they told us they made a mistake by given us the wrong room! I asked for a pay back of 1 bed and they told us they would come back to me about what they can do, but I never received any information from them again.

Hosts were nice, friendly and helpful, but our double room was not ok... it was really small, bed was small for 2 persons, no A/C (there was a small fridge but not working), mattress and bed lining not at all on par with low-cost motels in the USA and to make things worse walls where transparent to noise... we could ear *everything* in the facilities. On to good side the 24h access, but that was it... it was the least expensive option for us in a central location but we will not stay there a next time for sure.

I've been to a lot Hostels but this is the worst. Before workers are trying to make in sound not that bad. It is & everything I write is the truth. location: Bad.There are many homeless in san fran. But specially there. You see them doing heroin. There are also homeless people IN the hostel (I don't jusge because of the look I actually heard them talking about that) Hygiene: smell is SOOOO BAD & bathrooms are disgusting & weren't cleaned during my stay (6 nights) Just Changed the Garbage.(same dirt on the toilet for a week at the same spot). It's only a clean after yourself. 2 toilets on a floor with at least 3 6-people dorm rooms. Tasty. It would be good to clean the toilet with chemicals at LEAST every 2/3 day. I don't even expect it every day (but it should be tho) First hostel where people ate my food which was labeled. The front desk was just like "yeah that also happened before" oh really. That's great. (Just wanted to let them know because i was furious that night. I bought .. PAID for the perfect package of cream cheese that last my stay. Only had 2 bagels with this and had to eat the others dry. I definitely didn't want to spend another 5$ FOR OTHER PEOPLE. F dorm with a man. Hand soap to clean the dishes. Stains all over the ground in the carpet. No garbage in the room. 3 locker in a room for 6. (And tiny tiny tiny ones in the floor.). Housekeeping that spits on the ground (and literally just vacuums the center of the room lmao.) All in all idk what I've paid for. Making & stripping the beds on my own (which would be fine and i also did it in other hostels), dirty washrooms as it would be a public restroom which never would be cleaned, .. You are probably better with Couchsurfing. Even tho you end up in the worst apartment. It is probably better than the hostel AND free lol. I will never ever ever go to this hostel again. And a friend of mine, who came with me and who planned to come back 2 weeks later, canceled the hostel cause it is SO BAD. And she always goes for the cheapest hostels.
