Great location, walking distance to just about everywhere. There's always something to do :) free dinners some nights and free breakfast every morning. Wifi signal is great. Even though the power was out in some rooms over a couple of days I didn't even notice and it was hardly an inconvenience. The shower pressure is fantastic and there are plenty... More

I loved this place and wish I could have stayed longer. The staff were really friendly and can answer all your questions. The free dinners several times a week are insane, massive buffet! There was one night where we had Mexican it was fantastic. The hostel itself has a really social atmosphere. The massive common room/dining room is great to... More

I LOVED staying at the Green Tortoise! The staff are friendly, the decor is awesome and funky, free dinner three nights a week which is lots of fun and a good opportunity to meet others, and the location is great! Easy walk to fishermans wharf, market street, and muni/Bart stations. I was also lucky enough to stay for thanksgiving and... More

We stayed for five nights at the Green Tortoise in a private room. The location is fabulous- next to Columbus Avenue and a short walk to the Embarcadero and Market Street. There are great bars and coffee shops in the adjacent streets. The room wasn't actually in the hostel itself but slightly farther down the street in a self-contained house... More

Thanks Fraz, Yes, parking can be an issue and you do have to account for this extra cost in a gateway city with limited hourly or metered on street parking. We do however have a deal with a local parking garage of approx $20 per night for a compact car. We also suggest if flying into SFO that you rent... More

Hi Chicabuena, Being situated in North Beach (Little Italy) we are close to fantastic cafes, bars and restaurants as well as the famous city Lights bookstore and Beat Museum. This hostel is a great place to stay to experience life in San Francisco! After arriving at the airport, we used public transit to get to the hostel. It's a great location that's close to almost everything - can walk to China town, union square, the wharf - or to catch a streetca to Lombard! Lots of exciting and eclectic... More

I had an absolute fantastic time here! The staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. The free breakfast and dinners are wonderful and really help in saving money. Everyone I met was also very fun and the events that were run were great. The street is very loud though so if you want a quiet place this is not for you.

Thanks Lauren, We really try to make guests feel at home at our hostel! The area can be noisy on the weekends in peak season as we are in an Entertainment District, but having said that we are a very comfortable hostel and guests can request a room at the back of the building off the street if available. Cheers,... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
