#15 of 76 B&Bs / Inns in San Francisco
GreenLeaders Bronze level
Ideally situated in the very heart of San Francisco’s legendary North Beach neighborhood, Washington Square Inn welcomes its guests with all the charm and comfort of a small European Guest House. Whether you are traveling for business or for recreation, you will be offered our breakfast and our afternoon wine & cheese. San Francisco’s North Beach district is the City’s “Little Italy.” The heart of this historic quarter is Washington Square park, an urban oasis surrounded by sidewalk cafes, coffee houses and shops, anchored on the north side by gorgeous Saints Peter and Paul Church. Washington Square Inn faces the park, giving guests a front-row seat to this lively neighborhood with an Italian accent. The Washington Square Inn has 15 inviting rooms, each individually decorated with traditional furnishings, including many antiques. Some rooms have bay windows and window seats, fireplaces, and other architectural features. Several rooms have views of landmark Coit Tower on Telegraph Hill, Saints Peter and Paul Church, downtown or the park. All guests enjoy private baths, bath amenities, high quality bed linens and complimentary WiFi Internet access. In the morning, guests wake to a European-style signature breakfast, with freshly baked pastries, granola, yogurt, fruit, cereals, juices, tea and coffee. After a day exploring “Everybody’s Favorite City,” return to the Washington Square Inn for complimentary wine, tea and hors d’oeuvres.

This was our third visit to the WSI. We love it. It reminds us of a small French family-owned hotel. We are sorry that Covid has eliminated the wine-hour and breakfast buffet, but we felt very safe with all the Covid protocols and cleanliness. The check-in was super-easy and very responsive. We will return!

Room Tip: Don't expect one of the "corporate hotels!" The WSI is intimate but without frills....

Washington Square Inn is a beautiful oasis in one of the best neighborhoods in San Francisco. There are so many amazing restaurants nearby, and the people watching is fantastic! The room we stayed in was incredibly clean and so pretty. My mother and I felt very safe with all the covid-19 protocols the Inn follows! Some people may not like that there is no staff on premise, but we loved the touchless check in. It felt like we had our own little apartment in North Beach. The price is right as well, big discount from usual rates due to reduced services, but communication and response time were not affected. We loved our stay and highly recommend WSI!

Room Tip: The stairs are steep and there is no elevator so select rooms 1-6 if that's an issue.

My husband & I booked a weekend getaway in SF for our anniversary. We both love Washington Square Park & the surrounding North Beach area, so we decided to stay at the Washington Square Inn. We booked the Jr Suite which overlooked Washington Square Park & we could see part of the SF skyline. We weren't sure what to expect while traveling during COVID-19, & the reviews for the Inn from recent travelers were a bit mixed. We decided to take our chances because the neighborhood is safe & walkable. We were not disappointed! The check-in process was a little different -- we had a code to input for both the front door of the Inn & for our room. There was a man working at the Inn, but only between the hours of 9-5, I believe. He was very friendly & straight-forward about when he would or wouldn't be there. Luckily, we had no problems during our stay. There is no breakfast, afternoon tea or happy hour offered during COVID-19, so the front of the Inn was quite quiet. I don't believe there was anyone checked into the room next to us either, so our stay was quiet & relaxing. As stated before, our room overlooked Washington Square Park so opening the windows, catching a nice breeze, & listening to the music & people talking in the park & restaurant below was just what we needed to re-energize our spirits! We were able to have a picnic in the park, walk to various restaurants & bars & just enjoy the City together. As an added bonus, Mama's, an absolutely incredible breakfast & lunch restaurant, is located right across the street. Although the line on Sat morning for brunch was long, the staff at Mama's has their COVID-19 protocols down, so we were seated & served very quickly outside. The food was fantastic!! The only drawback to our Washington Square Inn adventure is they don't offer parking & parking is VERY HARD to come by in the neighborhood. Be aware of streets that require a permit for parking & make sure to read the street signs so you know when street cleaning takes place to avoid a parking ticket.

Centrally located in Little Italy. Tons of delicious restaurants! Charming rooms with an amazing view. Outside dining causes street noise until Park Tavern closes. Thankfully, management has provided ear plugs if needed.

More like a bad airbnb than a hotel. I had to wait 30 minutes in the street with my baggage before check-in. There was simply nobody there. Nobody was responding to the door bell or the phone. Run down room. Finally, I had to leave early and they promise that the will reimburse the last night. They never did. No response to voicemail or email. Just bad people.
