We stayed as a timeshare exchange and this resort is a typical older condo that's due for an update. Everything works, it's clean and the space is good -- just needs some TLC with carpets, sliding doors and screens. We were in the Wyndham Shearwater...More
We didn't realize when we booked this hotel that the units were basically fully furnished apartments. This was our final leg on a four-island tour in nine days, and it was quite the capstone as far as a resort is concerned.

We were just there in early May, and I suggest that you be careful when you rent a car that you don't fall victim to a "bait and switch" scheme. we had reserved a car from Dollar, was told upon arrival that we were being given a 6 person van rather than the economy car we had reserved, and it would require a $25/day upgrade fee, more than doubling our costs. Luckily we were able to go on line with our phones, and found an available car at another agency (Budget) for what our original cost was, and all we had to do was walk across the street.. Just be aware.

The big nightlife center would likely be Kona about 40 minutes away. There are also some very upscale resorts & condos about 15-30 minutes away in & around the Hilton Waiakoloa so I would expect some great options there. We did not seek out what may be just up the road in terms of various restaurants. After touring or a day at the beach we enjoyed coming back to the peaceful setting.
