Hale ‘Ohu Bed & Breakfast is a boutique, adults-only property set on five-acres with botanical gardens and a tropical rainforest. We are located in the quaint hamlet of Volcano Village nestled next to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Our three rooms are modern with all the conveniences and comforts travelers expect. Each room has a private entrance, spa-inspired bathroom, Breakfast Nook with mini-fridge, coffee maker and microwave; patio with garden views and a SMART-TV with Netflix access. Rate includes a generous and healthy continental breakfast, daily housekeeping, high-speed Wi-Fi and parking. Hale 'Ohu (ha-lay oh-who) means the House in the Mist. We are situated at a 4,000-foot elevation and enjoy cooler weather even on days with clear blue skies. In the afternoon, mist often rolls in from the slopes of Mauna Loa. We are a legally permitted B&B by the County of Hawai'i.

The Bed and Breakfast is located very close to the entrance to Volcano National Park and the town of Volcano. The garden setting is unbelievably beautiful and tranquil--anthuriums, ferns, bird of paradise, and other tropical flowers surround the unit. The inn-keepers are good communicators, they provide everything you might need (even a bottle of wine from the local vineyard), and they are accessible, warm and friendly. After we checked out they even allowed us to store our luggage while we went hiking at the National Park. The breakfast was very good, the heater worked well, and we were very satisfied with all aspects of the experience. Highly recommended!

Property's Favourite Review
The B&B is located in Volcano, Hawaii. Five minutes to Volcano National Park. It is set on more than four acres of lush flora and fauna. The grounds are VERY quiet and breathtakingly beautiful. Many species of birds observed. Dozens of species of actively flowering groundcover, bushes, and trees. B&B at approximately 4000' elevation so the nights and days are much more pleasant than at sea level. I sat on the back porch at sunrise our last day there. The tranquility and observed beauty was calming and left an image of beauty on my brain. There are not enough superlatives, or photos, that can do justice to what is observed from the porch in a chair taking it all in. Room is very well stocked with amenities with an appealing look. Queen bed was perfect for my body - firm in nature. Shower is unique; I wanted to take it back home. I may remodel my home based on the photos I took of it. Innkeeper is very friendly and attentive on a daily basis. She had several suggestions of activities. All of her suggestions became an enjoyable outing. Continental breakfast was good; the baked breads phenomenal. Internet speeds were fast. ROKU TV was fine. Exceptionally good experience - I hope to return here in the future.

We stayed in the Bamboo Room. Let me start off with the positives, and there are many. First, the grounds are as beautiful as anywhere I have stayed. Ever! The anthuriums and other flowers are off the charts. Check-in was easy. The room was large, great view. Everything was fresh. Breakfast (Left in the fridge during COVID times) was excellent. The bed was very comfortable. The rainshower was lovely. So what was bad? Just one thing, but it's a biggie. The mold/mildew smell was overpowering on entering. If you can smell it you are breathing in these particles and that isn't good for your health. There was no mildew visible anywhere, but either there is a leak behind the walls or in the ceiling or the water is getting into the floor next to the rain shower in the bathroom. The rainshower is a bit shorter than it should be so even if you are careful as we were the water gets onto the wall and floor right outside the rain shower. I would love to give the unit six stairs, but can't get close to that because of the hidden mold. The unit shouldn't be rented until it is fixed.

Mahalo, Robert for taking the time to share your experience. We are glad you enjoyed the expansive grounds and breakfast, but are terribly sorry if there was a strong mildew odor. Rest assured, there are no leaks in the walls or ceiling. As part of our renovation in 2017, the Bamboo room’s roof and walls, constructed in the 1970’s, were replaced and we closely monitor the structure’s integrity. Since Volcano is in a rainforest with over 100 inches of rain a year, all properties deal with damp conditions especially during the wetter months from November to February. We do provide a dehumidifier and wall heater in that room to help alleviate the issue. We wish you had mentioned this issue during your stay, so that we could assure you there are no underlining structural defects. We put a great deal of emphasis on our high cleaning standards as noted by previous guest reviews.

We took my visiting mother-in-law over to see the volcano, staying two nights at Hale 'Ohu. Gabrielle and Nicole were very helpful when I booked the wrong dates and had to adjust at the last minute. A different and delicious breakfast was delivered to our rooms every afternoon...to be heated up in the in room microwave. There was also a refrigerator and coffee maker, which made things feel homey. Each room has a deck with a view of their amazing tropical garden, including the largest Birds of Paradise I have ever scene. The grounds include a 10 minute rainforest walk, with ferns and flowers everywhere. And it was just 5-10 minutes from Volcano National Park and even less to nearby restaurants. Our only regret is that, due to the pandemic, we did not get to spend time with Gabrielle and Nicole. We will be sending future visitors back to Hale 'Ohu.

We very much enjoyed our stay! We had a great time on the Big Island, and this location was perfect, close to the Volcanos Park. The room was very modern and spacious. The property has a beautiful walking path with a garden. We liked that the breakfast was ready to prepare from the mini fridge each morning. The owners were very helpful and welcoming. We definitely will be back!
