We enjoyed our two nights at Hale Makamae Bed and Breakfast. Petra was a wonderful hostess and she made us feel very comfortable and at home. The breakfast was a wonderful way to start our day. My son has stayed here a couple of times and recommended it to us. My husband's cousin and his wife have also spent time...

Excellent room, great breakfasts, incredible local knowledge. Refreshing compared to the commercialized books and pamphlets that litter Hawaiian hotels and tourist areas. Out of the way, but in a good way. But are the birds ever noisy!

This is as quaint and peaceful as you can get. John and Petra are fantastic hosts and take very good care of their property and guests. The nightime sounds of the jungle were hipnotic I could not have wished for anything better. Breakfast was awsome and there is a town not far and easy to find with cool small shops...

We stayed in Hale Makamae for 3 nights during our honey moon trip on the Big Island. We were happy with John's and Petra's hospitality, their attentivness to guests (maps, directions, recommendations, advice), big, clean, cosy and nice room (Garden Suite room), charming surroundings (beatiful coast line, lava entering the ocean, alternative black sand beach, surfers' beach). So, this place...

Nothing but good things to say about Hale Makamae. It was recommended to us by the operator of the Lava Boat Tours (also a great value!). Our hosts made us feel welcome and were very knowledgeable about their area. I have lived on the Big Island for 25 years and highly recommend this B&B as a home-base for visiting the...

Even better the second time around. The Big Island is unpredictable. Lava flows. Lava doesn't flow. Rain. Sun. Funny tides. But, Hale Makamae is a constant in the midst of all the change....Petra and John are consistently hospitable possessing that rare combination of authentic friendliness and professionalism. Nice. Stay! You'll enjoy it no matter what the island is deciding to...

Hale Makamae is a very welcoming place in the Puna area where there's a lot to do (lava watching, warm spring, tide pools, the Volcanoes National Park, even Hilo is in close distance). Petra, the owner is a great host. She is very friendly and knowledgable about what you can do in the surroundings, and her breakfasts are downright fantastic,...

We weren't expecting much as it was a last minute booking but we had a great time and cannot thank the host enough. She really went out of her way. Lovely gardens, very clean and comfortable. Beautiful breakfast too! Really great place to stay.

We would have to rate this establishment average. We were a little disappointed. Our room was rather small. It looked bigger in the photos. Many bugs in the room (not exluding your average Hawaiian roach!) It was VERY hard to sleep at night as there are thousands (seemed like millions) of these koki (sp?) frogs that scream all night! It...
