It's been a month since my son (20 yrs) and I stayed at Mountain Meadow Ranch as part of a birthday trip for him, and I find myself thinking about Mountain Meadow Ranch nearly every day. We have often stay in B&Bs when we've traveled over the years as a family, so we have pretty high standards. I've been to the Big Island before, and wanted to stay somewhere in the northern part of the island in a rural and, preferably, farm or ranch setting so my son could get a sense of the back country. This B&B a beautiful little oasis, set back off the road in a rural area that is nevertheless close to nearby attractions (the town of Waimea is just down the road, Hilo is about an hour or a bit more away, and Mauna Kea is accessible, too, as a day trip). Gay, the proprietor, is the world's best hostess--friendly, warm, helpful, kind. We arrived late and in the dark (not the best way to navigate your way on these local country roads) and she was up waiting for us and gave us a big, warm welcome when we came up the drive. The accommodations were ideal (we stayed in the lower story of the main house): 2 very comfortable and spacious bedrooms, a large, comfy living room & dining area, and a small kitchen area with a fridge, microwave, and tea/coffee makers. Gay puts breakfast in the fridge for you the day before so you can get up whenever you please. The grounds are beautiful, and there are several big, friendly dogs and three gorgeous and well-cared for horses there, too. Although nestled in groves of trees, word has it the views on a clear day can be wonderful (it was cloudy when we were there). We stayed 2 nights; frankly, we both wish we'd stayed longer. It was the highlight of our stay on the Island (and we had a great trip all around). One hesitates to rave about Mountain Meadow because you want to keep the secret to yourself! Would go back in a heartbeat. Would be an ideal place for a small family with kids who would enjoy being on a family farm with friendly animals and a friendly proprietor, too. A must stay, for sure.

If your really want to experience the charm of Big Island....stay here. My family (4 adults and an infant) visited this cute B&B back in December for 2 nights. We stayed in the suite that is located just below the main house. During our visit to Big Island, we stayed at two other big name resorts...but Moutain Meadow Ranch was our absolute favorite accomodation. When driving up to this location, we were amazed with the beautiful natural lush surroundings. After entering the gate and driving up to the main house, we couldn't help but appreciate how the land looked so pure and untouched. For once....it was nice to see the true beauty of this island.....rather than your typical touristy concrete hotel, resort pool, and modern design. This place really made you feel like you were on a peaceful retreat...and that you were the only ones there. When we stepped out of the car, all we heard was a "peaceful silence." Upon arrival, the super sweet owner and staff greeted us. They gave us a tour of the grounds and we immediatly started to admire the horses, the sheep (and a newborn lamb), and the playful puppies that greeted us. Then the owner took us to show us our suite. A living room, dining area, 2 bedrooms, 1 bath, and an area with a microwave, refrigerator, coffeemaker, and kitchenware. This space was perfect for us. We really didn't need the living room space, but it was nice to have. Some pros: *The breakfast items the owner provided were delicious. She provided us with some great healthy items like yogurt & papaya. She also provided us with milk, cereal, and POG juice (the good brand too!). But the best thing was the coffee cake....it was from a local bakery and it was absolutely delicious. *Super comfortable beds. The king bed in our room must have had some type of thick memory topper....and it was so nice to sink into after a long day of driving around the island. Plus...the sheets felt AMAZING. I wanted to ask the owner where she got the sheets, but I forgot to ask before we left. They were better than any hotel sheets I've slept in. *Free WiFi *Beautiful grounds *Clean & well maintained *You can come and go as you please. This is really a great place if you plan on seeing the sights during the day, and just want a place where you can come back to and rest. No neighbors, no screaming , children, and no construction like you might encounter with hotels. *Peaceful & private place. You feel miles and miles away from everything....like you should feel when you go on vacation. *Hospitable owner....very sweet. *Incredibly affordable

We stayed at Mountain Meadow Ranch during our last days of Big Island adventure. Excellent location – close to both Mauna Kea observatory and beaches. Gay and Bill are very hospitable and charismatic owners – they showed us around the property, introduced us to their beautiful horses, and told us all about the best places to visit in their area. Gay provided breakfast every morning: fresh fruit, milk, cereal and papaya with lemon (best combination). We stayed in a guest house and had the floor all to ourselves – lots of privacy. Bed is very comfortable, a welcome sleep after a long day of exploring the island. Would definitely stay there again.

We stayed in the self-contained cottage well away from the main house so we had little contact with hosts Gay and Bill, but when we did they were pleasant, interesting, and chatty. The 2-bedroom cottage has spacious interconnected kitchen, dining, living room areas opening through large glass doors on to a west-facing deck over-looking horse pastures. The bathroom is a little cramped, but the water is plentiful and hot and the towel supply extremely generous. With all the abundant extra bedding it was easy to keep warm at night with no need for a heater even though early morning temperatures at this elevation (about 600 m) fell to 17C. Honokaa is a few minutes drive away and has a large supermarket that stays open late and an Italian restaurant with tasty pizzas and calzones. Like so much of the north part of the Big Island, most of the native vegetation was long ago replaced by introduced plants. Although the yard has beautiful old trees, especially eucalyptus, sadly that means the few birds around are introduced species like mynas and spotted doves, with no native birds. Luckily the Big Island is in fact small enough that within an hour’s drive we could find ohia and koa forests that did have native apapane, iiwi, amakihi, etc.

This is a most recommendable B & B, set in beautiful, quiet countryside. The room was luxurious and vast and Bill and Gay provided an excellent breakfast in the room, as well as very good advice for local eateries and visits.
