This hotel was built 1932 and very little seem to have been done with it since that. On the positive side is that it is centrally located in Honoka'a and that some of the rooms indeed have a nice view on the ocean. On the negative side is that the prices are FAR too high, that the rooms are VERY worn and not very clean and that the "included lite continental breakfast" is a joke. The hotel is run by an elderly couple that seem to run the business themselves (no staff). Please sell the hotel to somebody that can afford to invest in it.

There's two part of the hotel, the hotel itself and the hostel in the basement. I decided to stop in town after a long and rainy day at waipo valley instead of driving straight to hilo. I was by myself so I figure i'll take a bed in the hostel section of the hotel, it was dark and cold in the basement, bed frames made of woods came straight out of home depot, it was raw, cold, no sheet without additional charge, no heat in the hostel room; it was not an old hawaiian charm as some reviewerss mentioned, it's an old. Hawaiian dump! My hostel mate was a homeless woman, so she claimed! the shared shower room is tiny and curtain is filled w mildews,This is my worst hawaiian experience, and I have stayed at plenty of hostels from Europe to Asia, I can only imagine the standard and the level of hospitality of the owner/management of this place! Needless to say, I stormed out at the dawn!

Ugh! Hotel Honoka'a Club, in the Hawaiian sugartown of Honoka'a, makes four-letter words of "quaint" and "charming". Unless you enjoy listening to every guests' conversation, the moans and groans of passion, or the crowing of the Hamakua Coast Rooster Chorus, the slamming of your neighbors' doors and flushing of their toilets, make your lodging reservation at an AirBnB. Built in 1912 and "updated" in 1924 and 1939 don't even earn it an "it's a historic must-see" recommendation. I felt like we were in a firetrap.

We spent in the Hotel one night in January. It was on a day when Judy Collins was playing in town and fans from around the island pilgered to Honoka'a. Upon arrival the owner figured out that she overbooked the place and had a hard time finding room for all guests. Finally after some shuffling we were placed in another room than the one booked. We were happy to get any place to sleep and did not think much of it. But after coming back and looking at our booking as well the hotel rooms descriptions on their homepage it seems like we were downgraded without our knowledge to a smaller room on the first floor with full bed instead of queen bed and poor view on a wall instead of the "beautiful ocean view" that was appraised by the guest at the breakfast table. Generally that would not be a problem if we were informed about the downgrade and also refunded the price difference. The owner however did not disclose any of that and clearly took advantage of "backpackers" relying on her honesty instead of questioning everything. Sad. Also the papaya pieces and lillikoi marmalade were restricted at the breakfast which seems a little weird as this fruit grows like weeds everywhere on the island, including the hotel's backyard. All over: The place has historic character and could be really nice (at least the rooms on other people's pictures) but be careful to get what you are paying for!

Stayed here because it was a logical place to stay on a circular tour of the Big Island. (FYI, I highly recommend a circular tour if you have the time. The island is amazingly diverse from east to west!) Not a whole lot of accommodation choices on this part of the island. This place is like stepping back in time. I stayed in the "new" area, built in 1936 and from what I could tell not updated much since then. Very basic, which means no shampoo, no clock, no TV, no A/C, and even no blinds on the windows, though they were pretty unnecessary. This is truly what it must have felt like to stay in a Hawaiian hotel decades ago. I fully expected to see Ernest Hemingway there. (Yeah, I know he was more of a Cuban than a Hawaiian guy.) Breakfast is also very basic, so if you're looking for something hot or something other than coffee (no juice) then you'll have to look elsewhere. The owners were very helpful. Decent selection of restaurants within a five minute walk. If you like history then you'll probably really like this hotel.
