We needed one night to stay in Hilo before flying home and this was the only hotel that showed availability. We booked it without seeing it and didn’t end up staying there because of how sketchy it was. There appeared to be transient, homeless, and drug addict type of people living in the hotel and we didn’t feel safe in this part of town. It’s away from the resort area and no air conditioning in the rooms. Only dirty fans were provided. The bathroom looked like something from a truck stop. Just be careful if staying here if you are a family like us. For a little more $ a night go over to the Seaside Inn by the Hilton and get a safer, cleaner and better quality room.
Nothing fancy but a great place to stay in Hilo if you're on a budget. Clean rooms, amazing location right in downtown Hilo with views of Hilo bay from the hotel. Amazing staff , great little breakfast in the morning
Nice Hotel/Hostel, with bargain price, at a convenient location in Hilo. Would fit traveler's taste, and backpacker's, not so much tourists'.The staff is very helpful, we had incident with locking our room, and was conveniently resolved in the late hours. Great breakfast including local fruits - from all hotels during our trip in Hawaii this was the only one offering breakfast.
I was at the 'Wild Ginger' (hotel not the hostel) for a 2-night stay recently when I was in Hilo. As the management makes it clear it's not a high end resort but an old Hawaiian-style guest house. The rooms have your basic amenities. My room didn't have internet service (which I had been told beforehand) but the hotel lobby did so was able to use that. The lobby is nicely decorated with traditional Hawaiian artifacts and photographs (also has a fish tank) and was well-furnished with comfortable chairs and tables. Breakfast was also included in the price. The management takes great care in maintaining a quiet ambiance at night and close the hotel doors at 8.00 pm (they give you a key to the main door as well as the one to your room so you can enter the building at any time after checking-in). You do get a lot of noise at night from the creatures in the forest such as frogs and the hotel had provided ear-plugs (although I didn't have to use them). It is located within walking distance to restaurants in town and not too far from tourist attractions such as 'Rainbow Falls' (about an 8-min drive if I remember right). I really liked the 'family and friends' like atmosphere that the hotel had. Pretty good place to stay for the price that I payed!…
A true hostel in the best sense. And for a private room with tv, fridge, micro, close to town, comfy common sitting areas, view, available kitchen, garden, and Price (!), I will always be there when I’m in Hilo. Don’t Ever Change XO oh, and Josh! (The sweet evening check-in guy) Thanks!
