Newly renovated with nice new facilities, the service provided was excellent. Parking is complimentary but does fill up. The room was on the smaller size but had everything you need except for a TV as the hotel wants you to switch off (not a bad thing!). The atmosphere/vibe of the hotel was a nice change of pace to a standard hotel. Hilo airport is very close, so there is some aircraft noise at times but not during the middle of the night. Bed was comfortable and the shower was hot.

This was our 2nd time in SCP hotels - not aimed towards as this hotel was on my radar before it "converted" to SCP Hilo :) why I am saying this? Well there is something special about the SCP - it's not the fancy place, it's not the luxurious place, but where it delivers strong is that somehow you as a human being feel very appreciated and people who work at the SCP hotels seem to be very open and willing to help and happy with what they are doing - SCP isn't a hotel, it's an experience... Location: you are literally in the heart of Hilo - right next to ITO airport (didn't bother us though it's a somewhat busy airport), and once you get out of the hotel on the road this same road can take you all the way to the Volcanos National Park :) Hilo isn't this typical place people think of when staying on tropical vacation... it's an older "functioning" town with schools, jobs, infrastructure - it's not super pretty is what I am trying say, with respect to all its inhabitants. The area by the hotel is nice, the river/ocean + the banyan trees on one side make you forget the other main roads near by (no noise issue on that end, just visual aspect). Plenty of stores near by, some restaurants walking distance or driving, no grocery store with beer/alcohol in walking distance though so if you like beer in your room stop somewhere on the way :P Hotel grounds; this one can be a hit or miss, the new stuff renovated by SCP is beautiful, the murals, the greenery, the grounds... and then there are the hallways and the doors to the rooms - I would lie to you if I said some of that looks great, it looks pretty sad and depressing :( yes I said it, and yet somehow the other areas lift you up enough to forget about it - and considering how little we paid for this hotel it all worked out perfectly fine. There is a pool, there is even a laundry/drying machines on the spot for which you pay online (amazing!!!), a lounge room with swings, play rooms, a nice pound with Koi fish - it's a place with a soul for certain - we were first given a different room with 2 beds in one area of the hotel - the further away from the lobby the more "desperate need" of TLC/uplifting the hallways were I must admit Room: so the first room we received had 2 beds and we asked for 1 with just a single bed... I am so glad we did as the rooms were like a night and day... perhaps the first one didn't get its makeover yet... but I couldn't fault the 2nd room - it was perfectly clean, functional, modern - you name it it had it... all except a safe I believe - wifi was great, bed nice, no noise other than the planes - even the chairs outside the room in the morning were lots of fun to have a morning coffee at Swimming pool: lots of fun, especially during the time we set up the laundry :D Hilo is a great base to use for exploration of the Big Island so to return to the hotel after a full day of exploring and take a dip into the nice pool was a great refreshment! They struggles a bit with the towels but I ended up just walking back to the room and taking a shower/using room towel aftewards Things to do: plenty! drive to Mauna Kea Visitor Center. drive to Volcanos National Park - for starters, these 2 are a must and suuuuuuuuuper easy , basically 1 road leading you from the hotel all the way there. Explore the north east and north - Waipiʻo Valley Lookout was one of my fav stops on the Big Island, we visited also Lavaloha for the cocoa tour, Hawaiian Vanilla, Ahualoa Family Farms for some delicious Macadamia Nuts, there are some waterfalls and parks near by as well - Hilo is a base and possibilities are endless from here! Overall: we anticipated this hotel to be our base for exploration and it worked out perfectly, so if you have a similar idea of visiting the east side of the Big Island go for it, it's a perfect price to quality ratio at a great convenient location and the people here will further help you accomplish all your exploration goals :)

We were there 3 nights and we were lucky to time it right as there were fun things to experience all three days, a fun lei making class, a morning fruit sample tray ,and a poolside yoga class! The beds were comfortable and we had a view of the cruise ship pulling in one morning. I appreciated the water stations, the friendly staff, good instructors, and the quaint spots for eating or gathering. The bioreserve was one of my favorite places to visit.

Let me start by saying the staff is AMAZING! The hotel was ok, though. It wasn’t terrible, but I think there were a few things overlooked. From the outside it looks dated, but the lobby looks just like you would expect. Very inviting, looking like the focus is on the environmental impact that it seems is the hotel’s focus, and the rooms are just that as well, minimalistic. The room wasn’t terrible, but the bathroom was very very tiny and a little hard to maneuver around in. I do think it was a little pricey for what you got. The location isn’t really seaside. The hotel kind of borders what looks like an inlet where people were swimming. The back of the hotel makes you feel like you are staying in an industrialized area of Hilo. The rooms are updated, but the pictures on the website are a little misleading. We stayed in a peaceful king, and I thought that the door was to a private patio, but it wasn’t. My mistake probably, but it was a little disappointing. Instead, it was to the inner walkway of the hotel which happens to be outdoors kinda like a one level motel with gardens. The windows don’t keep light out, and our room happen to be flooded from the lights behind the hotel from the parking lot, so no sleep. On the outside and on the web it looks very inviting and comfortable, but not so much in reality.

Lovely stay in great location. Check in process was strange, we arrived prior to the 4pm check in & after travelling 16 hours were told we would have to pay USD75 for early check in. We went for a drive & returned to use wifi & bathroom & was told room would be ready in 20 mins. We went & got lunch & came back an hour later to a different check in agent telling us we’d have to pay extra, even though the previous one said we could check in after 20 mins. Appreciated the free parking, pool facilities & free coffee & tea. Really lovely spot by the water, resident turtles are straight across the road.

Aloha mkT3692PV, Thank you for such a fun review! We're so happy you were able to indulge in our amenities while you were here. Our team does their best daily to provide a memorable experience for you all. Rooms without a TV encourage us to reconnect with the 'aina (land) and kai (sea). Thank you for appreciating that. Hope to see you again! A hui hou, SCP Hilo Hotel 'Ohana

This hotel exceeded our expectations from the moment we arrived. The two young gals at the front desk couldn’t wait to share the SCP philosophy, tell us about the fantastic hotel amenities and area activities, make recommendations. I had to run out and get my friend in the middle of checkin so she could hear all of the wonderful information. Bicycles and paddle boards to use, coffee, tea, gams and welcome drink of fresh brewed Kombucha. The rooms and bathrooms are small but modern and the room amenities including hair dryer, clothes steamer and refrigerator. The A/C worked great, lots of windows. Could have used more outlets for charging electronics near the bed. Loved the pool- zen vibe. Hotel is great location- looked at several other hotels while we were here that we didn’t choose to solidify our decision and we made the best decision!

Overall, my partner and I had a pleasant stay at SCP Hilo. However, in retrospect, we wish we had spent more time in Kona as there are more resorts and restaurants on that side of the island, and less choice in Hilo. Hilo also felt a bit run down (lots of stores boarded up/permanently closed, restaurants that closed early, large homeless population). So overall, if we visited again we would probably choose to stay in Kona. Having said that, if you’re looking for somewhere to stay to be close to the Volcanoes National Park, then this is a good option in Hilo. However, for the price, the rooms are only so-so. The building and infrastructure is quite old/dated, and the room was very small, particularly the bathroom (King Bed Bay View room). But the room was clean and they have modernized the decor. The view from the room was also very nice (photos attached). However, worth noting that there was no safe in our room to store valuables while you’re out and about. In terms of the facilities, the hotel have beautiful gardens and a huge pool with plenty of poolside seating, as well as tables and chairs in a covered area just off to the side of the pool. There is also a communal office space and laundry facilities ($3 per wash or dry cycle, just under $2 for laundry detergent). There’s also coffee, tea, filtered water and kombucha on tap at reception. SCP have a great focus on environmental sustainability, so there are mugs/cups that get washed and no single use plastic (which is awesome!). The staff were also super friendly and accommodating. There was also free parking onsite and we never had an issue finding a park. Bottom line: a good option if staying in Hilo with great amenities, but the hotel itself is quite old and the rooms small.
