In a word I would describe Hotel De Fortuna in Edam as idyllic! My wife and I spent 3 nights at Hotel De Fortuna in early October. Even at that point in the fall season we were able to spend time basking in sun on the canal lined hotel patio. Our room looked out over that tree lined canal. It seemed every tour group that passed over the canal bridge stopped to take a photo of the hotel. Yes, Hotel De Fortuna is that picturesque! The dining area used for a very good continental breakfast and evening dining was very pleasant. We ate one dinner in the hotel dining room, and the meal was excellent. Nicholas our host was extremely friendly and helpful in his travel suggestions for the area. The hotel provided a free parking pass at a nearby public lot. Edam proved an excellent base for day trips to the area sites of Marken, Volendam, and Hoorn. Edam itself was a lovely town to visit on foot. With it’s cobblestone streets and tree lined canals Edam was a stroller’s paradise. Hotel De Fortuna will stay long in our memory as very special.…
We stayed for a week and loved it. We were able to rent bikes in Edam and spent the week biking around the area. The breakfasts were plentiful. We ate one night at the hotel's restaurant - the food was amazing. For dinner reservations are needed, but you then have the table for the evening and can have a leisurely meal. As others have said, the rooms aren't big, but that is because they are rooms that were built as part of a home- not as a purpose-build hotel. The room was clean, had everything we needed, had a lovely view of the canal that borders two sides of the hotel. We were able to have the window open to let in the fresh breeze, but the room looked like it would be warm and cozy during cold weather. The staff and owners were warm, friendly, and very gracious. We didn't have a car, but took the local bus from Amsterdam's Central train Station to Edam's bus station which is a few short blocks from the hotel. If you bring a car, there are a few nearby parking options. We saw other travelers with kids and/or pets.…
Having stayed in the busy craziness of Amsterdam previously, I was looking for something quieter and uniquely Dutch. Loved staying at Hotel De Fortuna and eating there for four nights. Our room, location, food and service were splendid. The included breakfast was excellent and plentiful. Mr Dekker, the manager, provides a wonderful experience. For us, Edam was a great way to enjoy a tranquil, idyllic setting, conveniently in the middle of the north Amsterdam area. EBS bus line sells a 24 hour pass for about 12 euros which let us zip out to Alkmarr for the cheese rituals, Zaanse Schans for the windmills, Horn, Marken, etc. and even the 30-40 minutes down to Amsterdam Centraal Train Station whenever we felt like sightseeing without having to pay the high price to sleep in a cubbyhole. I'll stay here again next time!…
I stayed here in january with my husband, and it was amzing. I love the breakfast they had. We also had dinner there one night as well and that was amazing too. I love this place so much and I cant wait to go back. This is the best place I have ever stayed at. staying here was like staying at a loving family members house.
Just a wonderful hotel to use as a base for exploring Edam and environs. Our room was cosy and charming with a pair of comfy chairs and a view of the canals. The restaurant is so good that we ate all of our evening meals there! The chef is a master with each meal bringing happy smiles to our faces and the wine selection...oh my. Very nice indeed. The staff were terrific. We loved the old part of Edam and walked on the dike to Volendam -- to hop a boat to Marken. Just a lovely part of Netherlands and so glad we stayed at De Fortuna.
Lovely hotel with cozy rooms and excellent restaurant. In the middle of the beautiful city of Edam. Staff was great. We were to stay only 1 night, but ended up staying 2 nights just because of the hotel and surroundings. Lots of small shops, restaurants, and canals. We were blown away by the city's inhabitants, very nice and friendly people. I only wish we could have stayed a few more days. The city of Volendam is close by, reachable by bus in around 20 min max, which is also a nice and fun place to visit.
We have just had the pleasure of staying at this quaint hotel for 3 nights for our friends wedding. A group of family & friends traveled from England for the occasion. The staff made the Wedding a very special day for the happy couple with their welcoming, friendly & organised approach. Everybody who attended were all treated to delicious local & international food all prepared by the wonderful chef & his kitchen staff. A special mention to Karan, Nicolas & George for helping us all make wonderful memories. Your staff are a credit to you. Will look forward to our next visit.
Stunning location, very pleasant outside spaces - the gardens are well kept and cleverly designed into several distinct areas that lead you through them. Rooms are clean but felt a bit tired. We felt a little pushed into dining, perhaps that's our lack of Dutch; it's difficult to describe why I didn't feel settled, it's more than (3)average but not quite (4)very good. Breakfast was plentiful and a buffet style, staff were polite, courteous and efficient.
Ee stayed for one night at the Hotel De Fortuna. The location is really nice and a great place for making bike trips in the surroundings. The room was in a typical old Dutch hous which is really original. However the room, bathroom and bed are really small and the interior would definitely need some restoration. Breakfast was good. The restaurant is the real value of this place and dinner is a must if you stay here!
Rooms were small but quaint. The weather was nice so we slept with the windows open. (I didn't notice if they had A/C.) However, the highlights were the beautiful outdoor areas on the water where we could sit and relax, and the restaurant. We had dinner there 2 evenings and both the food and service were fabulous. The town of Edam is gorgeous. It is a nice quiet place to stay for a few days.
