RIU Olivia Beach Sep. 2021 Review. Excellent Value for Money. Summary. I have based my rating on the value for money at this hotel. Anything that looks like criticism is just to warn you what to expect, and is meant as constructive comment. Always bear in mind what you are paying. It is clean, and the staff are friendly and efficient. Compliance with the current COVID regulations by guests apart from mask wearing and hand sanitising was poor. Staff were excellent in compliance in all areas inside and out, but they did not enforce the one way systems, or social distancing aspects of the requirements. A very difficult balancing act for them. Now a No Smoking Hotel. Depends on your disposition, you may be pleased or not that the hotel is now a no smoking hotel including the grounds. This is being observed but there is still smoking on the balconies at night though, and groups dotted around the various entrances to the hotel. I am not sure if this is permanent or just for the duration of the covid restrictions. Cleanliness. Cleanliness throughout the hotel, rooms, bars, and pool areas etc. is excellent. The rooms look a bit outdated but are in good repair and the hotel generally looks like it needs a bit of TLC but that doesn’t bother me. Staff. All staff are very friendly and helpful. Most of the reception staff I spoke to speak excellent English, and they are multi lingual with German, French and some other languages being used as well. Most of the bar staff have a reasonable understanding of English and especially German but do seem to appreciate you trying a bit of Spanish! All Inclusive. The whole hotel is “all-inclusive” and is definitely a bonus as all you see is what you can have, unlike many other hotels where all- inclusive is an added option. The bars have drinks menus but you can ask for most things and they will have it, or a local variant. For example, low/0% alcohol bottles of lager are available if you ask, and so is tomato juice etc. With the exception of the cocktail bar, Amstel lager, red, rose and white wine, plus most mixers/soft drinks and ice are available at self-service stations, including the restaurants. Restaurants. They are buffet style restaurants. The staff are friendly and very alert to guests coming in and attentive. You just walk in and pick a table. There are usually tables laid and ready for use but if a table needs clearing and re-laid, just ask a member of staff and they will do it, but they often notice you and re-set the tables without being asked. There has been some past comment on the lack of variation in the food choice availability from day to day. I can see the point to some extent but there is a reasonable choice each day, especially in the cold meats, hams, cheeses salads fruits etc. but it may be very similar day to day. Don’t expect a full English breakfast but eggs fried and scrambled, beans, and sometimes but more rarely bacon is available. Instead of bacon, there is usually strips of cooked ham or boiled frankfurters. If you expect a full English and a more comprehensive choice remember this is a Spanish hotel that caters for European tastes and bear in mind this is a 3 and not 4 star hotel and excellent value for money. Pool Areas. Due to the Covid restrictions there were less sun loungers than usual in the main building pool area but well spread out, and more tables and chairs than usual. It appears that you can move them around. The pool bar is very close to hand and is open from 10am to 6pm, with snacks available throughout this time, a buffet breakfast from 10 til 12, noon, then lunch, and afternoon cakes etc. from I think from 4 til 6pm. Entertainment. Due to the Covid restrictions there was a limited entertainment programme. During the day there was aqua aerobics in the pool and some other activities, and volley ball in a beach area close by for those of a more energetic disposition. Children’s entertainment was also available. Evening entertainment. There were daily groups/acts of a high standard during the evening outside but under cover. There is also a gym, table tennis etc. but we never got that far. There are two shops open in the hotel complex, where you can get most holiday related products etc. and a supermarket close by. Corralejo the local town is about 2 miles or so away. 1.4 euro’s on the bus (No.6) which runs every half hour during the week, and hourly on Sundays. There is a taxi rank outside the hotel and they cost 7 euros to Corralejo so if there are 4 of you it is about the same price as the bus. Lifts. Rules on lift occupancy was 2 persons per lift. This caused considerable delays, especially as 33% of the lifts were out of action throughout our stay, and I believe have been for the last 2 years. COVID -19 Risk Mitigations. The RIU processes and procedures, marked out one way systems, signage, social distancing requirements, hand sanitiser stations etc. were compliant with the regulations. Staff wore masks in all areas including outside and regular sanitising of surfaces could be seen. Mask wearing by guests was good, and enforced by gentle reminders by staff if some forgot. The use of the many hand sanitiser stations by guests was generally good. However, for the remainder of the requirements most of the one way and social distancing requirements were generally ignored by guests and there was no evidence of staff enforcement. I think it would be safe to say that social distancing in the restaurant was impossible.

Being a fan of RIU hotels I was happy to stay here. As usual with RIU the good out weighs the bad. I'll start with the good: The good: The staff at this hotel are friendly. I always felt welcome whether by restaurant or entertainment staff (especially Isabel in the restaurants whose level of attentiveness was superlative). The food was good, not excellent like high end RIUs but good all the same. I still think the food outmatched the star rating of this hotel and I think this is a good thing. The rooms were spacious and the beds were comfortable. The sea view was stunning and the location in my view is one of the best on the island. There are plenty of areas around the hotel where you can relax, play games, sunbathe, play sports, drink and chill - I really enjoyed the size of the hotel and the 3 main lifts never broke once! (which is a big holiday bugbear for me). The rooms were cleaned to a good standard and the maid staff were very friendly. The bad: The other Speciality restaurant was not available so the whole 2 weeks we had only the one Chinese restaurant available to us. Although the food was good in this one and only available speciality restaurant, it was a shame the other was closed. This was compounded by the fact that although the main buffet food was good, it was not greatly varied night after night. This meant we had 1 speciality restaurant and more or less the same buffet food every night for 2 weeks. Also, the specialty restaurant was a buffet. All the other specialty restaurants I have attended around the world were white cloth at-table service ones - I think the 'at-seat' service is part of what makes them special - so this was a disappointment. The rooms do need a refurb and need to be updated in style but they are spacious enough. The outside of this RIU is now ready for at least a repaint. It's a beautifully designed hotel, it just needs a bit of refurbishment to revive its former glory. Summary: There were several disappointments as detailed above but the service, room space, level of attentiveness, location and certain foods won me over. Although the hotel needs updating as a whole, I would certainly stay here again. I always felt respected and attended to - the staff are friendly without a doubt.

Stayed here many times and the location is unbeatable. The beach rivals any in the Caribbean. Rooms a bit tired but fine for sleeping and getting changed. The food was excellent. Can’t wait to go back .
