The Rocomar Hotel in Madeira is in a great location - the ocean views are fantastic, and being able to dive straight into the ocean is something you do not often get the opportunity to do at most hotels. There are also several nice spots to lounge in the sun, either by the pools or as you walk down to the sea. However, there are several aspects which make the hotel seem more like a 3* than the advertised 4*. Although breakfast is standard like most hotels, the options at lunch and dinner are incredibly limited. The salad bar is quite limited with many hotel staples not being available, and the hot dishes were not that varied. There were often no vegan or vegetarian options, and some of the fish options were not very appetising. For a hotel on an island, the over reliance on tinned tuna was disappointing. Most of the staff were very friendly and polite, however, the bar staff in the evening at the main restaurant / bar were quite rude and dismissive. The all inclusive drinks options were limited compared to other hotels (there only served white rum and not dark) and, at times, the bar staff seemed to avoid those who were all inclusive for those who were paying for each round of drinks purchased. The Wi-Fi often was not working (or working very slowly) but allowances can be made for this. The A/C in the room broke on the forth night and when reception were informed, the response was “I cannot do anything about that”. It took a further three days and another visit to reception for it to eventually be fixed. There are many good aspects to the hotel, one being the second bar by the pool, and the rooms are comfy and spacious. A good place to stay for the week, but maybe for bed and breakfast only. There were a number of nice restaurants in the local areas, as well as Funchal itself, which are well worth a visit. Overall, a good base for exploring Funchal and the rest of the island.

I can highly recommend Lurdes Silva the manager who went above & beyond her duty to make my moms stay an absolutely fabulous one. I gave my mom who is 82 years old a guest certificate . Lurdes Silva called my mom & when my mom arrived she came to the reception desk to make sure my mom was in a room that suited her needs. In fact giving her a choice of which room suited her needs the best. The staff , at the restaurant where friendly , took care of all my moms dietary needs at the morning breakfast buffet. I can highly recommend that we will certainly send my mom back there & I will certainly like to visit this resort myself. To Lurdes Silva & her staff thank you for the extra attention you gave my mom in order to make her stay a fabulous one. Thank you

We stayed at the appartments. You can use several swimming pools, although the water was very cold outside. Swimming in the sea (they have an entrace with stairs to the sea) was not possible because of the waves.

Everything in the appartment was very clean.

Very friendly staff at breakfast, lots of food to choose from. Even bacon and eggs etc, The are strict to the corona rules, you even had to put on gloves and the buffet which felt extra save.

The diving centre of the hotel (it are three combined neighbour hotels) was closed unfortunately, also you have to go down a lot of stairs to get there.

You can park at the hotel's parking if you pay extra, we would recommend it if there is space, because the street is very crowded with parked cars.

We arrived, and the first thing was that this resort has 3 hotels, one is closed and being renovated, one is new and nice. The third is where we got a room - old, smelly, but has ocean view... The room service comes at 5 PM, new towels cost 2.50€ even if you have all inclusive option.
The hotel is a bit empty and food is limited. Lunch has 2 / 3 meat options and 5 sides. Diners have same food as for lunch, they usually add extra meat option. All inclusive option is not all inclusive since the menu has what you need to pay additionally even if you have all inclusive option.
The hotel is old and needs renovation, take a look at pictures.
The hotel has access to the ocean and has lots of room for guests to spend time by the ocean or pool. The restaurant and bar staff is really nice and friendly. The reception is not...

This place is advertised as a 4-star establishment. It is very far from it. We stayed here for one night (double room 442) because we were stranded in Madeira (due to technical problems with the airplane).

I'll mention the good things first: The reception staff were very friendly despite the fact that we arrived a full busload of people, tired from waiting at the airport the whole day. The view over the sea is spectacular. The bathroom was modern and functional with a good shower and nice big soft towels (always a big plus in my book).

But that's all for the good parts. Roca Mar is a huge place without any charm whatsoever. It didn't help that the place was under renovation and parts of it looked like a construction site. But even if it had been in tip-top shape, it is just too big and completely lacking in character or charm. The buffet restaurant was unbelievable – it resembled most of all an enormous canteen without any decorations or plants or anything else to add a bit of ambience. The noise level and acoustics were atrocious. The bar area is the only place with a little more ambience but there are not many tables there and so most people have to sit in the very big main "restaurant". The food itself (dinner buffet and breakfast) was OK such as it was – not a big selection but it was edible. The staff did what they could and were friendly, but the place itself is horrible, I'm sorry to say. We only spent one night on account of being stranded after a nice week on Madeira so it was no big deal, but I shudder to think what it would be like to have booked more than a day there.

The room itself was OK but dull and rather nondescript. It was cold and the aircon could not heat the room. There were blankets to put over the covers (we used them). There was no electric kettle and no tissue papers. Nothing available but the mere basics.

The staff tried their best, but I really cannot recommend this hotel to anyone.

Dear Froggy2Denmark, We thank you for your comments, and we are very sorry that your stay did not match your expectations. It was really bad luck that you only stayed one night, and the rooms we used, were closed due to low occupancy and that we only opened at the urgent request of the airport. If you had stayed more days in a normal booking, with good weather, you would have been able to verify and enjoy the beauty of our Resort. We also appreciate the comments made, as they are extremely important to our entire team. However, we hope that you will allow us to regain your confidence on your next stay with the Rocamar Lido Resort, when we shall be entirely at your disposal! Thoroughly enjoyed a recent stay in Rocomar. Hotel staff are extremely polite, friendly and helpful. We stayed in a studio suite, the room was very spacious - separate sitting ròom and galley kitchen, great bathroom with a powerful shower, lovely fluffy towels. We had a spacious balcony, the view is obscured with a firewall but that cannot be helped. Really comfortable bed. The hotel have great and plentiful sunbathing and lounge areas with the most amazing views. The pools are great - I particularly loved the sea pool. Breakfast in the hotel is lovely, particularly the continental breakfast. They have a gorgeous outdoor dining area overlooking the sea.

We had dinner in the hotel one night - we didn't particularly enjoy the food and it was extremely expensive as we were b&b only. The food is buffet style and we didn't think there was a varied menu, disappointed that there was no fish dish.

The hotel spa is very expensive and doesn't use products of a recognised brand.

I would 100% recommend this hotel. It is clean and comfortable, great facilities and a spectacular setting. The staff are wonderful. I would recommend people travel to Funchin and sample some of the wonderful restaurants and hospitality..

The hotel is located in a quiet area of Canico. You can walk to the supermarket in 2 minutes and there are also a couple of places to eat and bars. You can catch the bus to Funchal, the bus stop is about a 5 minute walk away. One service is an express which does not stop often and only takes about 25 minutes. The other service takes about 45 minutes. Easy to get to Funchal and well worth the visit.
The hotel faces the sea and has beautiful views out across the ocean.
The dining room has a lovely outdoor terrace where you can eat and enjoy a drink. I really enjoyed the food with plenty of choice at breakfast and dinner. However the restaurant did feel more like a school canteen rather than a place to enjoy a nice dinner. However I can not fault the food served. I had often nearly finished my meal by the time I was asked if I wanted a drink, so not the quickest of service.
From the hotel it is also possible to walk to the Cristo Rei statue in about 45 minutes. It is very hilly but if you enjoy a walk then this is lovely and the views from the top are great.
There are plenty of places on the terrace of the hotel to sit. There are a lot of steps but plenty of areas with sun beds. There is also direct access into the sea, some days this was not open due to the sea being quite rough, but when it was open it was lovely for a quick dip to cool down.
There is a gym onsite which plays music all day and is open to the public. My room was quite close to the gym so music could often be heard from the room and also when laying on the terrace.
A nice hotel which offered good value for money. A good area to stay in Madeira for your holiday. I would happily stay here again.
At the time of going, masks were required in all indoor spaces and gloves were needed in the restaurant. They were following Covid guidelines to make it safe for all.

We arrived at the Roca Mar after a very early flight, 6.45 and really didn't expect our room to be available until after 2pm, to our surprise it was. Thank you very much for this as it enabled us to get into the holiday spirit straight away.

The superior room was a good size with amazing views of the sea. The room was immaculate and one of the cleanest hotel rooms we have stayed in. The beds and pillows were extremely comfortable with the bedding changed as often as you felt it was needed with good quality sheets.

The restaurant and bar was below our room but at no point did we get disturbed at night even with the doors open. The only issue we had was with the air conditioning which we struggled to get to work effectively, more our fault than the hotel as we didn't raise this as an issue with them.

We stayed on B&B basis the breakfast with plenty of choice for everyone and even Bucks Fizz on a Sunday.

The weather wasn't on our side during our visit but this didn't spoil our experience at the Roca Mar or Madeira.

Thank you Roca Mar, your hotel is a credit to you.

Lovely seaside location, the new rooms are very clean and well equipped. There are shops and restaurants in the surrounding area, and the public bus into Funchal takes about 30 minutes if you are not using a car. There is live entertainment in the evenings, and a plentiful breakfast. However our experience was spoiled after being cheated by Booking.com. We paid for and were promised a sea view room with balcony, however when we arrived the hotel staff informed us that they had only been sent a reservation and the money for a cheaper room. We spent over an hour in reception on the phone to both Booking.com and their "partner company", a Spanish firm called Hotelbeds. Each company just blamed the other and refused to do anything to help. We had to pay the hotel an extra 30 Euros per night upfront in order to be given the room that we had been promised. So you pay top price for the best room, the hotel only gets the money for a cheaper room, and somebody somewhere pockets the difference! After returning, I exchanged many emails and phone calls with Booking.com trying to get my money back, but all they ever do is say they will get back to you and then never do so. They don't care.
So my advice is don't book through Booking.com unless you want to be scammed!!

An amazing Hotel - we were in the beand new refurbed bit, gorgeous views across the ocean, so beautiful sunsets/sunrises
Foodwise Breakfasts amazing, Lunch/Dinner a bit samey each day - we were all inclusive and only found iut on last day that there were sandwiches etc available in the dining room during the afternoon, so a bit more info would be better from staff on arrival
Be warned if you have mobility issues this is really NOT the place for you, lots of uphill and the sea water pool is a very very long way down the cliff steps.
There are two other outdoor poos fairly accessible.
My only real complaint was we weren’t given any fresh towels at all in the week we stayed there, I appreciate the system for pool towels but really think bath towels SHOULD be changed
