Hotel Riu Madeira earns high marks for its spacious and immaculate rooms that boast stunning views, although the decor may feel a bit outdated to some. The hotel's amenities, including multiple pools and a complimentary shuttle to Funchal, are popular among guests, as is the praised food variety and attentive staff. While the serene atmosphere is a highlight, a few visitors suggest a need for more lively entertainment. The secluded, picturesque setting is appreciated, despite its remote feeling. However, some guests feel improvements could be made in value, noting subpar ingredients and limited activities for children.

We stayed for two weeks and can't really fault anything.
We are in our early sixties although act and feel half that age. We were not the oldest there and must say that there were very few young people there, and I mean teens and twenty odds although that is more of a good thing than a bad one. There was no load music, just very low background at times and there were almost no children there at all, which to us is a very good thing.
The wine gets some poor feedback, and whilst it isn't top quality, it is perfectly adequate and like most average wines, after the first glass or so it gets better. The selection of food is really good and the quality is really high too. Although not vegetarian ourselves it was good to see a section laid out for veggies.
The room was impeccably clean and serviced every day. I did like the fact that the aircon was extremely quiet being a very light sleeper, maybe the wine helped a bit.
The staff were very attentive and truly cared that we were happy at all times.
I personally don't mind having to serve my own beer, in fact I prefer it to asking at the bar every time I fancied a beer, which incidentally is of a pretty good standard. It's called Super Bock if that helps.
My wife's tipple is Vodka and that was ok too. Although she did sample the Gin once and the Cocktails considerably more than once.
The nightly entertainment can be a bit cheesy, but if you want Vegas, go to Vegas and if you want BGT stay at home.
Take the free bus into Funchal, which you must book at reception, go up the mountain in the cable car, but consider it may be raining up there. It was when we went, but you are right in the clouds so we should have been better prepared. The Botanical Gardens are worth a visit but it is very hilly. We didn't ride in the wicker sledges as there was an hour wait and then when you get out you need a taxi either back to the top or to the bottom as they stop half way down.
When you are due to return to the Hotel be aware that the bus is sometimes full and you will need to wait an hour for the next one, so don't be late and don't be at the back of the queue either.
The boat trip we did was amazing. There was no crowding on the boat, lunch was first class and all drinks were included. We stopped for a nice swim, but the best was when a school of Dolphins followed us for about ten minutes.
We also hired a car from the Hotel for a visit to Machico which was nothing special and almost completely not touristy at all aside from the only sandy beach on the island and Santana with it's funny little triangular houses which was more interesting.
Highly recommended Hotel.

We changed hotels from where we usually stay at for this one just 2 weeks prior to departure (other hotel was having work done). It was a great choice. Lovely large room with beautiful views out to sea. Everywhere was lovely and clean. Staff very friendly and helpful and fluent in many languages. You get a table for your evening meal , either 6pm or 8pm sitting, which is yours for your stay but breakfast and lunch you sit anywhere. Waiter service everywhere so you need never move!! There is a free bus into Funchal but we didn’t use it as we’ve been several times before. We enjoyed the quiet location , just 15 mins from airport, there isn’t much in the village but we did lots of walks which suited us.Some roads are extremely steep so not suitable for wheelchairs!! There is a nice little prom and a safe area to swim in the sea. There are three pools at the hotel, one indoors and one of the two outdoors ones is heated. There is a games room, tennis, table tennis, a library to borrow or leave books and pretty decent evening entertainment. The drinks are very good. Loved the beer wine and cocktails. There was plenty of choice for the buffet style food but some was a bit fancy for me! My only issue was that I can’t eat raw onions and on some evenings it seemed that all the vegetables were mixed with onion so I couldn’t eat them, but I never went hungry. One evening the live cooking chef cooked me some meat especially as it was all with onions!! He was very kind. By all means offer onions but maybe in a separate dish for people to help themselves.
There were ample sun beds and places to sit outside for a coffee or drinks and upstairs you can have meals outside. Lots of cats wander around as the hotel feeds and takes care of their health and needs. Not an issue as they certainly don’t pester you at all. There is a very rocky beach but it’s lovely to watch the waves
We certainly enjoyed our week and hope to return some day.
Many thanks to all who work at the Riu Palace Madeira

Just returned from a very pleasant weeks stay at the RIU Palace. It’s a lovely hotel, spotlessly clean. Very pleasant and helpful reception staff. We had arrived early, as our room wouldn’t be available for a couple of hours we told to go and have breakfast, which was welcome after a early start that morning. Breakfast has a vast selection of choices, something to suit all tastes. Help yourself, waiters bring you tea or coffee. When we went to our room, found we had been upgraded to a junior suite! Beautiful room, two massive double beds, sitting room, dressing area and bathroom/toilet. Nice size balcony with table and chairs. Everything spotlessly clean. Although it is a large hotel we never had a problem finding a sun bed or somewhere to sit around the pool area. Dinner in the evening had a choice of two sittings,we chose the 8.00. Again a good variety of food hot and cold. Waiters very attentive and soon remembered each night what you were drinking. There’s entertainment on each night but if you want a quieter evening there were always seats in the bar and outside areas. Special mention to the fantastic violinist on Saturday evening in the bar area. Used the hotel courtesy bus a few times to get into Funchal and also used the local bus which stops right outside the hotel to get around to other areas. The hotel’s location is in a quieter area with a few other hotels around but not much else. Talking to other guests, many were return customers, which says a lot for this hotel. Thank you again to all the great staff for making it a very enjoyable week.

We arrived at noon on Monday 19/7 for 11 nights courtesy of TUI from Birmingham.
The queue at check in was horrendous but dealt with quickly by friendly staff.
As I am disabled and arrived on mobility scooter we were allocated room 1269 0n the same floor as reception, lobby and the main restaurant.
The room location was superb with sun on the balcony from 2pm till sunset.
Unfortunately in respect of the room it finished there!!.
The room was dated with dark furniture and the bath tub was a disgrace with the enamel chipped and painted white!!.
We complained and were offered 2 alternate rooms on the same floor all had the same problems with the bath tub.
Also very difficult for a disabled person to get into the actual bath tub area to use the shower as you could not utilise the bath tub.
The hotel itself was lovely the restaurants excellent the food superb and the staff incredible.
The pool area needed a good jet wash and the mattresses to the sunbeds were old and stained as were the towels supplied.
Covid adhearence was good with masks required in the main hotel and sanitisation available at all entrances and lifts and temperatures taken on entry to the restaurant.
Service and drinks were off a good quality and the staff just could not do enough for you.
A couple of side issues were the
1) Noisy Building work on the promenade outside the hotel.( Whilst acknowledging this is outside the hotels control TUI should advise customers prior to booking).
2) The reservation of Sun beds. This would appear to be a worldwide issue but it is unfair on other guests when you see people getting up at 7am to reserve beds go to breakfast then not return till after lunch!!.
There were signs prohibiting this but no action taken
On complaining the hotel advised that it was due for renovation in January 2020 but had been delayed due to Covid and the hotel was due for a major renovation in January 2022 and would be closed for 4 months.
I have stayed at RIUs in the Dominican and Mexico but this was not of the same standard and unfortunately let down the Riu brand.
The location of the hotel was also rather isolated so the courtesy bus was very welcome and Funchal is a beautiful city, with the cable car and baskets a must for any tourist.

Just returned from a week at this hotel. It has super varied food that should satisfy everyone. Very well presented. At breakfast and lunchtime you can sit where you want and come and go as you please, however the evening meal is very different. Unlike most all inclusive hotels, this one has 2 sittngs for the evening meal. You can choose either 6.00pm or 8.00pm and you will be allocated a numbered table on your first day and you must sit the same table for each evening meal. You do not have to arrive at 6.00pm, but you MUST give yourself enough time to complete your meal before 7.30pm - 7.45pm. This reminded me of being back at school where there were 2 sittings for lunch!! Personally I did not like this approach as it was too regimented. Apparently RIU use this method in their other hotels??
The wifi in the hotel is superb, It is the best I have experienced. Youtube etc, no problem.
If you wish to sunbathe on a beach or paddle in the sea, this is NOT the hotel for you. Firstly there is NO beach!!! There are massive boulders and rocks instead of sand. The North Atlantic crashes against the rocks constantly, and is very dangerous. The photos of the hotel must have been carefully taken to avoid showing the "beach".
There is a free safe in the room and also a large ceiling fan, which was surprisingly effecient. Aircon may be activated in the later months?
There is a free shuttle bus (coach) that can take you to Funchal which is the capital of Madeira. The journey is around 20 mins each way. Funchal is worth a visit for a couple of hours. You can book the shuttle bus at Reception ideally the night before you wish to go. You can go as many times as you want. No charge.
Overall, this was a relaxing break, but please ensure that is what you are after before booking. The regimented evening meal times and lack of sandy beach mean that we will not be visiting again.

We visited in first week of March just before the Corona Virus shut down. Weather was generally pleasant but we noticed some days weather was cloudy at hotel but sunny in Funchal so worth venturing out on the free bus.

We used the free bus about 4 times and worked out if you took the 930am bus and returned on the 230pm bus you got back in time for lunch which was served until 330pm when we were there. Journey takes about 20 mins. Bus was rarely busy so if you booked a set time we found you could return on an earlier bus if you needed.

Room was comfortable but quite dated and in definite need of refurbishment as was the rest of the hotel. I really don't understand people putting their TV on and talking aloud at 6am waking us up which was annoying. Reception did offer us a change of rooms.

We found the food in the buffet to be varied with an excellent choice whether you are a meat or fish eater. Plenty of beef which some AI hotels seem to omit. You are given a set table time which seemed to work well as the buffet never seemed over crowded like some AI hotels.

We would have liked an alternative al a carte option restaurant as the one they have didn't look greatly appealing and the menu seemed focused on meat eaters.

Service from reception and all staff was excellent throughout.

Pool is heated and we used a few times in early March.

Entertainment varied from excellent (The magician/Illusionist and the Dancing Group) to quite poor (the resident singers and band and other acts). Unfortunately we were disappointed the advertised Elton John tribute on Friday was switched so we didn't see it.

Location is a bit remote particularly if you like to go for long walks. We did manage to walk to the hill to the far left of the hotel but it was a bit treacherous walking up on a very windy day. The free bus though gets you in to Funchal quickly so easy to escape.

We enjoyed our stay but don't think we would return mainly due to location and age of clientelle. It did at times feel a little like an old peoples care home. But for a relaxing week away with good food the hotel will meet many peoples requirements.

We arrived at hotel and booking in couldn’t have been easier. We were presented with a glass of Madeira Wine as a welcome drink. Staff were friendly and helpful. We went to our room and cases arrived within seconds. The room was large and very comfortable with large bed and two comfortable chairs. There was a bowl of fresh fruit on the table and also a half bottle of Madeira wine and glasses. The bathroom was large with bath with a shower over and there was also a bidet alongside the toilet. The restaurant was excellent with buffet food for breakfast, lunch and dinner with waiter service for all the drinks. The staff again were friendly and helpful and couldn’t be faulted. All the drinks on the “all inclusive “ deal were good quality too. There were a couple of really nice bar areas as well as a quiet room for card games and reading. The entertainment started around 8pm with main attraction at 9-30 ish and the theatre/dance floor had plenty of seats. We were there in February so it may get more busy in the summer. The pool area was very nice with a heated outdoor pool and an un-heated outdoor pool together with an indoor heated pool and spa which we didn’t get time to use.
The atmosphere in the hotel was amazing, a sort of modern Poirot but in a great way, even down to red roses and strawberry cocktails to all the ladies on Valentines night.....perfect
We will be going back!!

Ok let me begin I like a bargain and value for my buck. I am currently day 7 into an 11 night stay at the RUI. Firstly this hotel has grasped the COVID rules face masks personal serving tongs in the restaurant and ensures all guests are following COVID guidelines. Now to give you a real insight to this really nice hotel. Firstly the renovations have been put on hold due to the world pandemic however it is very friendly comfortable brown furniture may offend the snobs but it is still very comfy and clean. The rooms are very spacious beds very comfy the shower hot and powerful. There is a fridge table and chairs and cleaned squeaky clean daily. The restaurant is very organised the food plentiful and delicious and lots to choose from. The various bars serve food and drink all day and all very good for the AI guest. O need to rush with the Germans at midnight for a Sunbed there’s plenty and the towel man is religious at opening times so no bad reviews there. This hotel is lively and worth the money maybe not for families with young children not a lot for them but the rest of us it’s a relaxing enjoyable hotel. Don’t read the negative reviews the staff here are so friendly helpful and are doing an excellent job. I never thought of Madeira as a holiday destination but.more fool me it’s very nice Funchal a free bus ride away and very picturesque we are off on the cable car ride and basket toboggan ride this week it’s not expensive at all. Please don’t listen to the keyboard monster warriors this holiday has been in COVID a real token and now I know of this gem will return….. happy holidays everyone

We have just come back from four weeks at this outstanding hotel. We were a small group of two couples and we are all agreed we will definitely return (when the situation permits). We booked through Tui and they have been excellent too, at this unusual time.
Our arrival, including the Covid test at the airport, all went very smoothly with no waiting around at all. On arrival at the hotel we had to remain in our rooms until we received a negative test result, but the hotel staff looked after us incredibly well -phoning at regular intervals to check if we would like a meal and/or drinks, We awoke the next morning to the negative results we all hoped for and then were able to explore the hotel for the first time, We were required to wear a mask when walking around the hotel public areas, dining room, bars etc., but that was not a problem at all, The hotel had clearly taken a lot of care to ensure tables in the dining room and bars were well spaced, as were the sun beds. Hand sanitizers were everywhere, and there were one-way systems in place too, It all served to make us feel safe and comfortable without feeling oppressive or restrictive.
The food was really good, with lots of choice, and lots of freshly cooked dishes at the food stations, if you didn't want the standard buffet fare. The drinks were also of good quality and choice (we were all inclusive).
The thing that made the hotel stand out was the staff. From reception to the dining staff, from the bar staff to the pool staff, every single person we came across was so helpful, pleasant, friendly and (despite the fact that they must have been worried about their own future employment) unfailingly cheerful. I don't think we have ever found such exceptional staff anywhere we have been in the world!
The hotel itself was clean, comfortable and well-positioned.

Hi we stayed at the Rui Palace all inclusive for 11 nights in June 2021.

Pros:- beautiful hotel, very relaxing, spotlessly clean and the staff were amazingly friendly and couldn’t do enough to look after you.Food was very good with something for everyone. Very well organised for COVID 19, Sanitiser everywhere and masks always worn whilst walking around so felt very safe.

Cons:- Sadly the hotel is very dated and my bed sheet had holes in it (pic included). They did’nt have Malibu but some of the waiters would make a fake one for me whilst others didn’t have a clue what I was asking for and would just bring me brandy or gin. On the last but one night they offered me real Malibu at a discounted price but sadly run out after 4 drinks.

This hotel is definitely not a platinum 4*hotel It’s more a 3*.
All in all we had a lovely holiday. Beautiful island full of beautiful people.

We went on two all-day TUI excursions, one to the West and the other the East. These were great excursions, showing us pretty well all the island and included great lunches. On two days we took the hotel shuttle to Funchal and the rest of the time we spent in or around the hotel. We had no need for a car.

The hotel is so close to the sea you might as well use the loungers at the hotel. There is a gate from the lounger area to the promenade and sea.
