"Best in Van Horn" isn"t really saying much, but this place is a gem. I stayed there for most of my weeklong day hiking trip to the Guadalupe Mtns last year in May. Did the same thing in April of this year.

This hotel is well done, the manager Ralph is very pleasant. The rooms are quaint and very quiet. The courtyard and lobby are wonderful. Would absolutely stay again. Very reasonably priced. The entire staff were pleasant and professional.

The El Capitan's greatest surprise was the delicious food and delightful service in the hotel restaurant. We ate there all 3 nights of our stay. The rooms are nice and clean but ours was getting a bit frayed. Also the lack of drawers was not great. But back to the restaurant and courtyard! Wonderful

After having stayed in several motels along the highways of Texas, we decided to go for a real hotel. The room was on the small side, but nice. The beds were comfy and the bathroom was clean. The staff, both at reception and in the bar, were friendly. It was a warm night, so we enjoyed beer and wine on...

We were supposed to stay at the Quality Inn. A word to the traveler, don't stay at the Quality Inn. Instead, we found Hotel El Capitan. The courtyard is calm. All the people who work here are human and friendly. The Dining Room/Gopher Hole Bar is an experience. They have a full bar, an excellent wine list and one the...

I passed by this hotel about two years ago, and did not have a chance to stay. I recently had occasion to return to west Texas, and rather than stay in El Paso or Fort Stockton, I stayed at the Hotel El Capitan, It was great. The preservation efforts have resulted in creating a real showplace. The entrance is via...

Our first stop in Van Horn was in 1982 and it was a nightmare that has become a family joke. I specifically chose to give Van Horn another chance and was not disappointed with El Capitan. The front dest check-in was a breeze and the staff were all nice. I reserved room 240, which is a large king patio suite...

We found the Hotel El Capitan a very comfortable and clean place to spend the night in western Texas. Very refreshing to stay in a hotel that is not a chain hotel. They had a very nice breakfast which was included. I especially enjoyed the fresh blueberries and strawberries in February!

This place was almost like an oasis on our whirlwind tour through western Texas. It was set on a somewhat run-down strip of businesses, paralleling a still-used (and busy) railway line and I-10, in a small town that appears to be trying to making a comeback commercially. From the road, it probably has the most warmth and character of any...

The price of an extremely small room with a single queen-size bed, was nearly $140 with tax. For that price, every other hotel/motel I know of includes breakfast, sometimes Continental, sometimes full. The price is attributable mainly to the historic character of the building. It is indeed fascinating, one of three built about the same time, including El Paisano in...
