The Royal Oak Hotel is a Grade II listed building which began its life in the 18th century, however parts of it are much older. There is a chimney stack in the hotel which features stone from an abbey that once stood in Pool Quay in Elizabethan times. Originally The hotel lay in the grounds of nearby Powis Castle. During its existence for centuries this grandiose Georgian building has welcomed many travellers through its doors. During our time as a coaching inn on the main route to the welsh coast of Wales, the Hotel saw its current function suite used as a stables with its own Ostler (someone who looks after horses). Notably, in 2010, The Royal Oak Hotel pleasure of welcoming one of the most prestigious guests from anywhere in the world, Her Majesty the Queen, when she visited Welshpool to open its new indoor cattle market and to have lunch at The Royal Oak Hotel.

The hotel felt all Christmassy and cosy when we arrived and the Covid19 protocols in place were good. We had an afternoon tea as part of the deal which was lovely. The room was spacious and had a good view of the high street. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful and made our stay relaxing. The breakfast was fantastic and they catered for our gluten free and vegetarian diets which was great. We were extremely happy with the overall stay and will be back in the future.

I stayed for four nights. Extremely friendly and attentive staff, always willing to assist when required. Lovely room, very comfortable, clean and well stocked with all I required. Only had the breakfast each day. I am still digesting it a day later! Fabulous. Great work all round for the Covid precautions. I felt very comfortable with everything they had put in place.

The service and hotel amenities were very good, room was comfortable. Food overall was good. Location in centre of town was convenient, but the drawback was traffic noise from early morning to late evening.
