Travellers' Choice
In a quiet place of undisturbed tranquility and almost surreal natural beauty, where the slopes of Ben Cruachan fall into the clear waters of loch Awe, lies a deeply romantic and luxurious old country house called Ardanaiseig. In a 19th-century manor house on 120 acres beside Loch Awe, this luxury hotel is 21 miles from the ruined Kilchurn Castle and 22 miles from Ben Cruachan. Elegant rooms offer loch or garden views and feature antique furnishings. All rooms have free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with DVD players, tea and coffee making facilities, and designer Scottish toiletries. There is also a separate glass-fronted loch side Boatshed suite and a 2-bedroom cottage. An acclaimed restaurant serves upmarket, seasonal dishes. Full Scottish breakfast and afternoon tea are available, and other amenities include boat rentals, croquet and bikes.

We returned to the hotel after an absence of 12 years really looking forward to a post lockdown stay. We remembered the hotel as charming, quirky, really comfortable and with first class food. Sadly, we were disappointed. The shabby chic interiors are just shabby, our bedding was ripped and the bathroom dilapidated and needing upkeep, the shower was not working so we changed rooms - which the staff were very helpful about - , and the heating in our replacement room could not be turned off as apparently it heats the water for the hotel (goodness knows what they do in the summer). The food was a disappointment - more style than substance, cold as so much time was spent decorating the plate (it felt like we were in a Masterchef competition) and tiny portions that you could

Dear 3wed567, Thank you for taking the time to write a review of your recent stay with us. I'm sorry that we didn't meet you expectations on this occasion. There are a few things that clearly were not right. For example, ripped bedding is not acceptable and certainly not a common occurrence and for that I apologize. We get amazing comments about our food, as you can see from other reviews, but I disagree that we provide small portions. None of our hard working team have time to pretend they are on Masterchef either. What's really disappointing is that you feel the need to comment on things like investment and the upkeep of the hotel when you know nothing about what really goes on behind the scenes. There has been a huge amount of investment - re-modelling and landscaping in the Garden Walk, painting of guttering and drain pipes, clearing invasive foliage from the front of building, a new septic tank in one of the accommodation zones, painting and decorating in the bedrooms, and a new kitchen - all things that you wouldn't really notice - would you? In April we even stripped the wooden floor in the Drawing Room and re-varnished it. Not bad for a hotel that has only been allowed to open for 6 of the last 14 months. Furthermore, future investment is directed at replacing one of the roofs and installing some new eco-friendly boilers. After all, its the same heating and hot water system that was in place when you stayed 12 years ago. Perhaps now you can see how unfair and out of context some of your comments really are. At a time when hospitality businesses across the UK are really struggling, they should be supported instead of having to suffer unnecessary put downs. Ardanaiseig continues to be charming, quirky and comfortable, with great food and a first class team of staff. Best wishes David McGhie General Manager

We loved staying here, and our dog loved it even more than we did. It is a relaxed and welcoming place to stay, despite the restrictions imposed by covid. The staff were really friendly and welcoming, and were very happy to help us with requests for things. We stayed here previously, about 10 years ago, and the rooms remain very similar, but are slightly tired in places, but nothing too significant. It's a great place to come to escape to and to enjoy the grounds and the loch. We'll certainly be back again.

We stayed here for 3 nights, very welcoming staff! Chris and Maxine looked after us very well with recommdations of places to go and places to eat and personalising our stay making it more relaxing!! Lots to see on the grounds with lots of walks and different things to do, the views from both hotel and on the grounds were outstanding! We are making plans for our next visit!!

On the long gravel drive down to the hotel we were filled with excitement to be staying at this grande dame on the Loch. The location does not disappoint, a beautiful imposing building set on the side of Loch Awe. The interior of the hotel (downstairs, in the communal areas) are grand but fraying. There are wonderful views from the drawing room, assuming you get the one sofa that overlooks the loch. As soon as one embarks along the hallway towards the living quarters, the smell envelopes you, a bit like diving into Aunt Maud’s musty handbag. It’s a big place so we still kept hoping, but room was a chintzy overcrowded disappointment, with brown bath water, which is simply to be endured. The food in the restaurant was good, as was the service. Mineral water is a must. Brown is

We came across Ardanaiseig by chance 8 years ago now (through a Groupon deal of all things) and have returned at least once a year since, including having held our wedding there four years ago. The hotel has been through a lot of changes over the years, particularly when it comes to management, and at times its future has looked uncertain as good management couldn’t be found. I’m so glad to say that, in the hands of Christine and David, Ardanaiseig appears to be flourishing, even in these uncertain times. We visited last week to celebrate our fourth wedding anniversary and our daughter’s first birthday and were made as welcome and comfortable as ever, despite all the restrictions that are sadly necessary at the moment. The food both nights was great, as was our breakfast, and
