Travellers' Choice
In a quiet place of undisturbed tranquility and almost surreal natural beauty, where the slopes of Ben Cruachan fall into the clear waters of loch Awe, lies a deeply romantic and luxurious old country house called Ardanaiseig. In a 19th-century manor house on 120 acres beside Loch Awe, this luxury hotel is 21 miles from the ruined Kilchurn Castle and 22 miles from Ben Cruachan. Elegant rooms offer loch or garden views and feature antique furnishings. All rooms have free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs with DVD players, tea and coffee making facilities, and designer Scottish toiletries. There is also a separate glass-fronted loch side Boatshed suite and a 2-bedroom cottage. An acclaimed restaurant serves upmarket, seasonal dishes. Full Scottish breakfast and afternoon tea are available, and other amenities include boat rentals, croquet and bikes.

We stayed here for 3 nights, very welcoming staff! Chris and Maxine looked after us very well with recommdations of places to go and places to eat and personalising our stay making it more relaxing!! Lots to see on the grounds with lots of walks and different things to do, the views from both hotel and on the grounds were outstanding! We are making plans for our next visit!!

On the long gravel drive down to the hotel we were filled with excitement to be staying at this grande dame on the Loch. The location does not disappoint, a beautiful imposing building set on the side of Loch Awe. The interior of the hotel (downstairs, in the communal areas) are grand but fraying. There are wonderful views from the drawing room, assuming you get the one sofa that overlooks the loch. As soon as one embarks along the hallway towards the living quarters, the smell envelopes you, a bit like diving into Aunt Maud’s musty handbag. It’s a big place so we still kept hoping, but room was a chintzy overcrowded disappointment, with brown bath water, which is simply to be endured. The food in the restaurant was good, as was the service. Mineral water is a must. Brown is just about manageable to bath in but not to drink. Unless the place gets a major refurb, we wouldn’t return. For the price, we preferred the Kilchrennan Inn.

We came across Ardanaiseig by chance 8 years ago now (through a Groupon deal of all things) and have returned at least once a year since, including having held our wedding there four years ago. The hotel has been through a lot of changes over the years, particularly when it comes to management, and at times its future has looked uncertain as good management couldn’t be found. I’m so glad to say that, in the hands of Christine and David, Ardanaiseig appears to be flourishing, even in these uncertain times. We visited last week to celebrate our fourth wedding anniversary and our daughter’s first birthday and were made as welcome and comfortable as ever, despite all the restrictions that are sadly necessary at the moment. The food both nights was great, as was our breakfast, and nothing was too much to ask of the brilliant staff. Thank you again to Christine, David, Gary, Maxine and Carrie for looking after us. We really consider Ardanaiseig our home from home and we look forward to coming back as soon as restrictions allow.

We are just back from a lovely 2 night break at Ardanaiseig. We had stayed here 4 years ago, and had loved it then. It is quirky and original. Similar to a previous review, we had no hot water, but that was quickly resolved by the friendly and helpful staff. With quite a few of the rooms being empty, because of the covid travel restraints, the water had quite a way to go to get to our room. The 2 dinners that we had were excellent, as were the views from the bar that was set up as a mini dining room for the few guests that were staying. We have already booked for a Spring break, and are really looking forward to it.

We had a voucher for B/B and 3 course dinner and hot cider on arrival, which was good value but I would not pay full price. Staff very friendly and welcoming, room was nice cosy and comfortable but when we went to have shower could not get hot water at 5pm. Not good. All covid rules in place and we felt safe. Dinner was advertised as 2 rosette fine dinning but unfortunately it was far from that and very disappointing as that was the reason we chose to go. Breakfast was fine but still not for a hotel advertising 2 rosettes. Surrounding area lovely. We won’t be back sorry.
