We stayed here on the last leg of our North Coast 500 tour. The building is old and traditional in style and therefore expect the floor boards to creak.... we were given a four poster room which was nice.

The Royal Hotel really is a landmark at the end of the High Street in Tain. It seems unfair to have to rate a hotel, which would really benefit from some upgrading, in a small Highland town, with the same criteria as would be applied...More

Stayed 2 nights. They forgot to make up the room after the first night. Breakfast was adequate but the one waitress on duty seemed overwhelmed. Bed was comfortable, room was clean, room facilities were fine.
We only booked the day before for our one night stay in Tain and were upgraded to a large room with four poster bed on the first floor. The hotel is in an old building and everything creaks a bit, but it all works. The...More

My husband and I are staying at this hotel next month and are concerned (based on the review so far) about this being the best choice for our family with two young children. What are the best rooms for a family that are quiet, clean, & spacious? It sounds like the hotel is really run down and dirty (smells like ciggy smoke, and noisy all hours of the night?!). Thank you for any help you can provide!

Hello there, apologies I did not see your question earlier. I was quite surprised by the hotel as I kind of expected the same, but it was very quiet when we were there, the restaurant was ok, however I'd recommend the restaurant by the station. It is ageing a bit, but the friendly staff and location more than made up for it as it was nice to be central. I believe the place was very busy at one point when the oil was booming, however the the terminal nearby has pretty much all but closed its door and I believe the whole town is quieter due to this. I was just in a single room, which was a bit on the small side, but I'd imagine the family rooms would be a lot larger. There is no smoking in the hotel by law (UK laws now). My room was cleaned daily. I dare say there is better hotels around Tain, however they're a bit of a distance. I was happy, but was only there on business. I hope this is of some help to you guys, and that you enjoy your trip, it is what you make of it that counts :)
