If you like meeting people as part of your holiday experience then Stromness is a good choice of town and the Hamnavoe Hostel in the centre of Stromness is a good choice of residence. It's a sparklingly bright, clean, white hostel overlooking the sea with a very relaxed atmosphere and low costs. Stromness itself was the home of George Mackay... More

All the other reviews about the hostel are abslutely right. It really is very good, clean, decent, thick matresses (rare for somewhere offering real value for money) and a very pleasant kitchen and sitting room. We arrived late on a Thursday (10pm by the time we got to the hostel) and George the proprietor happily came out, let us in... More

This is one of the best hostels I have ever stayed at...and I've stayed at a lot. The living area and kitchen are bright and spacious, the rooms are private, every single room in the hostel was super clean, plus the wifi actually worked in the rooms which is rare for a hostel. Plus the owner is very accomodating and... More

Orkney is a wonderful place for a holiday, so much to see and do if you like the great outdoors. We were fortunate with the weather and had a very smoothe sail past the Old Man of Hoy, arriving in Stromness with that beautiful Summer twilight. The people are wonderful and George operates a very clean and efficient Hostel and... More

Had a fabulous holiday in Orkney; walking, wild camping and enjoying all the archaology, amazing scenery and wildlife. This fantastic experience was enhanced by the discovery of the haven in Stromness, that is the Hamnavoe Hostel. Spotlessly clean, comfy beds, hot showers and even a hot bath, a great luxury after a days walking. The well equipped, spacious kitchen and... More

George runs a very friendly, clean and comfortable hostel with all facilities. The rooms are new and nicely furnished. The location is great overlooking the foreshore and really close to the ferry. The kitchen and lounge area are separate and very comfortable. All the appliances and facilities in the kitchen are clean and like new. I stayed 6 nights and... More

I spent a month in the Hamnavoe - 1 week in the appartment and 3 in the hostel. Both experiences were excellent. The places are very clean and comfortable and a great location in Stromness. George is very friendly and flexible in terms of arrival/departure times and looks after the guests well. The kitchen in the hostel is great and... More
