We have just returned from our second August Bank Holiday visit to the Langstone and we can only say well done and thanks.
The Langstone offers a unique experience, a step back in time with a modern touch. The rooms are comfortable, clean, tidy with the the usual toiletries and drinks tray with biscuits.
The staff, which make the Langstone what is are the heartbeat and soul of the hotel. A couple of minor issues we had were sorted out quickly and efficiently without fuss or excuse. They just get on with it.
From Reception, Bar and Restaurant, Cleaning, Maintenance, Catering and Waiting all do their jobs well and keep everything ticking over. I could mention names but there are too many and unfair on those we did not meet directly.
The Victorian feel of the place from the architecture, decor, furniture and gardens, even creaky floorboards in places give a feel of past-times when the world was a nicer place.
They also have a loyal clientele base of families that return year after year, some of which we now know, I can understand this even though ours have fled the nest many years ago. The safe feel of the grounds where you can keep an eye on the children from the terrace makes for a less stressful parenting experience although the funfair, various shops and bars in the Warren area are 10 minutes away as are nice sea wall walks down to Dawlish and short drives to Exmouth, Shaldon, Torquay etc.
The two pools are a nice distraction and occupy you when you don't want to sit on the terrace or in the lounges or lay on a sunbed as are the various games tables and tennis court.
The car park is extensive and the grounds spread far, the views are wonderful and the walks are not too difficult!

Overall all I have to say that we ( a couple in our 60's ) who holidayed abroad for many years have, over the past couple of years found a little gem of an old English style hotel with exceptionally hard working dedicated staff who will give you a lovely experience.
We enjoyed last year, we loved this year!!
Thank you Langstone, we'll be seeing you again.

We booked this hotel in Sept when our visit to Portugal had to be cancelled. This is a delightful family hotel in an excellent location with spacious grounds and views over the Exe Estuary and Jurassic Coast. The SW Coastal Path passes the bottom of the hotel garden. We booked a balcony room which was large and comfortable - choose first floor if you want a bath. The staff were excellent, helpful and attentive. COVID arrangements were good with all staff wearing face coverings and careful organisation of the restaurant, bar and lounges. The lounges were large and comfortable. Food was good and not expensive. An inside pool and fitness room were in use.

The main issue was the WiFi which was of poor speed in the room (about 4mbps download) and difficult to get on to. Although not cold, the heating in the room was unreliable with little heat in the radiator. The hotel did provide a convector heater which we used occasionally to provide extra heat.

We had a great week overall. A highly recommended hotel and location.

Just returned from an Old Time Dancing holiday at the Langstone Cliff and writing this review as I was so impressed with the hotels safety procedures. I have stayed at this hotel before on dancing holidays so I was aware of how much space there was. On arrival I was reassured by the welcome received and the clear information provided by the hotel to comply with the current restrictions. They only allowed tables of 2 or household bubbles in the dining room and they had a good system in place to keep everyone safe while serving the food. In the rooms there was the same high standards we have found before with extra cleaning and you could choose to not have your room serviced, yet still receive the extras delivered to your door. I would recommend to any group thinking of using the hotel that they would be very safe. The large ball room was rearranged especially for our group to keep household couples 2M apart. The parking was greatly improved because of the new parking system they have introduced and it worked very well. Our room was the usual high standard we always find at this hotel the food superb and the staff could not do enough for us nothing was too much trouble and during what must be a very difficult time for them they never stopped smiling. Looking forward to retuning again next year.

There is very little to do or see in the area. The reception staff were offhand and quite rude. The beach is very good when the tide is out but in order to reach it you have to walk out of the hotel, down the hill, across an unmade car park and up over the railway bridge to access it so would not be easily accessible for people with young children or with a pushchair. There are very few facilities or things to see or once you arrive at the beach. The hotel swimming pool is disappointingly small and in my opinion, not worth getting wet for! Do not be deceived by the photos. It also has no spa facilities. It is not worth the price charged and does not approach good value for money. They are very money grabbing as they want to charge extra for the smallest things: £5 for each tray for room service and £2 extra if you want to take your dog down to breakfast even though they specify they are dog friendly and already charge £8 per night per dog anyway. On the plus side it was very clean and the breakfast was excellent. I can not imagine what there would be to do for any more than one night either as a solo traveller or as a family. I suggest finding a location that does not have an impassible railway line running for miles along the coastline, effectively blocking off both the beach and the view.

The hotel is brilliantly situated with views of the sea and distant shores as well as the coastal railway. It is on the coastal path, so a round walk to Dawlish and Dawlish Warren is a delight on your doorstep.

The hotel itself is very well run and the staff are keen to provide their guests with good service. It was particularly impressive how they had adapted to the Covid 19 situation with a one-way system, hand sanitizer and mask rules posted throughout.

The cost and the rooms are where the hotel could improve. This old, charming hotel has high prices that do not match the quality of the rooms. Our room had a lovely view, but the floorboards were creaky, the shower old-fashioned and with loud noises whenever we or our neighbours used water. If this could be updated, then Langstone will back on top.

This was the first holiday that my husband and I have had with our 8 month old baby and we couldn’t be more happy with the hotel, its grounds and the staff.

From the moment we arrived the staff were friendly and attentive. We were here for 4 nights along with my parents and we all thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The food was delicious and there were plenty of options for us as two of our party are vegetarians. They also provided us additional portions of food so our baby could also enjoy the yummy food! All the staff who dealt with us were great, one lad in particular was very attentive (17 yrs old, sorry I don’t know his name!). He regularly checked in with us to see if we were ok and also picked up our baby’s toys frequently when they fell on the floor! Rachel was also very kind, it seemed that she was run off her feet most evenings but always served us with a smile. All we request is some Devon cider next time! 😂

The room was very clean and comfortable, if a little stuffy. There were some issues with WiFi connection but they were resolved and the tv signal wasn’t the best but we didn’t use it often so didn’t cause us an issue. It was great to be a stone’s throw from the beach and we enjoyed walking into Dawlish on the coastal path. It was also great to have the pool to ourselves for 45 minutes, we used this every day of our stay. The hotel has adapted well to covid and we still were able to enjoy ourselves given the unfortunate circumstances.

It has been a memorable holiday for us and I’m grateful to the hotel for the experience. I hope we will be back again in the near future.

A group of us families and friends (black) visited Langstone cliff Hotel for a double birthday weekend away on the 11-13th of September 2020, and it was clear to the naked eyes that we weren't welcomed by most of the staff. I said good morning to six staff standing together and only 1 responded. The catering manager was blatantly arguing with one person in my group on the top of her voice about seating arrangements. All other guests stopped eating to pay attention. We were never allowed to sit in the same room let alone together for any of the birthdays. My room did not get cleaned and I had to ask my ten year order to ask for clean towels and top up of tea and coffee.

When I spoke to one of the staff members regarding sitting in one room as there were other people having functions, she said they paid for it. We did book as a group and paid full amount per night so did not understand. We asked on several occasions to get a chance to sit together but despite speaking to ROB who was trying very hard and handed over to the day staff we were refused after he left. The receptionist reply was because we only paid for bed and breakfast we are not entitled to choose where we sit.

The only good reception we got was from EMILY at breakfast on Saturday morning. She was extremely pleasant and politely presented herself while serving. She is an asset to your hotel. Thanks Emily you saved us from having a completely bad time!
ROB thanks for your help in trying to allow us to sit together even though it didn't materialise. Such a shame as you put so much effort in.

This level of discrimination should not be happening anywhere!! It's appalling. I hope there will be a staff meeting to cover these issues so that hospitality is displayed across the board.

C. Jay

Response from Mark Rogers, Owner at Langstone Cliff Hotel
Responded 19 Sept 2020
Ms Jay, We became aware of your trip advisor posting and review of our hotel on Wednesday 16th September. Needless to say, we were shocked, saddened, and indeed horrified, at the content, and are anxious to explain or correct many of the anomalies that you allege. First, and most importantly of all, your heading ‘Racism and Discrimination’, we find this totally and utterly unacceptable. It is absolutely untrue regarding any of the family ownership of the hotel or any of our employees. I should now like to respond to the points you make in your review 1. Your phrase “it was clear to the naked eyes that we weren’t welcomed by most of the staff” is meaningless to me – perhaps a little more explanation from you would aid my understanding? 2. The six staff that you addressed would have been part of our housekeeping team taking instructions from their supervisor, on an especially busy day for the hotel and provided their team leader responded to your greeting cordially, I feel that this would have been satisfactory. None the less we have brought your comment to their attention, they send their apologies, and for sure the error will not be repeated. 3. Rob, the duty night-porter did, as you say, convey your wishes for all of your party to be sat as close as possible together for breakfast this was relayed, at handover, just before the restaurant opened for breakfast. Unfortunately, this was not practical for the restaurant team, under the current guidance, without sufficient notice. Up until this point we were unaware that you were a member of a such large party of over 20 guests, as several members of your party had booked individually, under different names, we can only apologise for this. During the current circumstances you would have all been sat separately due to social distancing. We do not normally allocate tables for breakfast unless you are also taking dinner, therefore for a party of your size to sit near each other a private room would be normally be required. This was not booked, and unfortunately, not available at such short notice. We were not made aware that you were celebrating a double birthday. We were contacted by a coach company checking our address and as we were unaware anyone was arriving by coach, we asked for more information. The driver led us to believe you were attending a wedding elsewhere, but due to GDPR regulations he could not provide us with the contact details for the booking. He informed us he would ask the organiser to contact us directly by phone, so we could double check the details. We however, did not receive this phone call. 4. We understand that the housekeeping team had attempted to clean your room (assuming it was yours) but that you or a lady from your party, returned to the room on multiple occasions and this combined with our efforts not to contravene the current Government Coronavirus advice requiring that we make efforts to ensure room cleaners and guests should not occupy bedrooms at the same time prevented the room being cleaned. I do hope that your son’s requests for towels and top-up Tea and Coffee were complied with. 5. Thank you for your acknowledgement of Emily she is most grateful. 6. Your final paragraph “This level of discrimination should not be happening anywhere!! It’s appalling. I hope there will be a staff meeting to cover these issues so that hospitality is displayed across the board.” This statement Is blatantly untrue, and we find it very distressing to be unjustly accused of such behaviour. We have also made all of our team aware of how easily such things can be misconstrued. A gentleman with your party, my son Mark, now managing director of the hotel and myself – now the “old man of the team” had a chat in the hotel office before your departure. Where he outlined his concerns with the seating issues at breakfast, along much the same lines as your review, and we replied with apologies for any misunderstandings. There was no use of the words “racism or discrimination” which most certainly does not emanate from the Langstone Cliff Hotel. I feel sure he will confirm that we parted with smiles and talk of how much better we could have looked after your friends and family with clearer advance information and the hope that we would be given the opportunity to do so on a future occasion. Kind Regards Geoff Rogers Director

We called in at the Langstone Cliff for a cream tea, after booking in at reception we were directed to the lovely lawn area and took a seat. We were served promptly and ordered a cream tea for two. We didnt realise that you got two (large) scones each! so unless you have a big appetite one between two would be plenty. The scones were delicious and there was plenty of clotted cream, jam and tea or coffee if you prefer. All was delicious. The only downside was the wasps, but thats the great British alfresco dining experience for you. We had a bar meal on another evening which was very nice, unfortunately my first and second choice of meal was unavailable but the waitress offered us a drink on the house to make up for the disappointment which was very good of them. We have been coming to Dawlish Warren for a few years and it is the first time we have tried the Langstone Cliff and would definately go again. The lounge is very comfortable for after dinner drinks and the well kept lawns are lovely to sit on when the weather is good. Covid precautions were in place with track and trace and tables /chairs cleaned down before te next customer could sit at them. NB as non residents we had to pay a small fee for a Day pass which was taken off the bill at the end.

We stayed at the Langstone Cliff Hotel this week in order to meet up with friends and explore the surrounding area. The hotel staff were all very helpful, patient and friendly. The hotel management team has clearly put thought into how to provide COVID safe service whilst still making the experience of staying at the hotel a great one.
We had a good-sized room, which fit two twins and a double, saving us from having to book two rooms (although as our children get older we will probably not get away with that for much longer!) The bathroom suited our needs and the shower always had great pressure and lots of hot water!
Our children enjoyed using the indoor pool, which has a booking system to ensure limited numbers in the pool at any one time. Despite the hotel being busy this was never a problem and we found we could use the pool as much as we needed.

We ate in both the hotel restaurant and the bar and enjoyed all of the food we tried - the Langstone Burger is definitely worth trying!

Although we met friends at the hotel we would be very happy to visit again as a family and explore the surrounding area on our own. Our teenage boys found plenty to stay occupied within walking distance.

The hotel is a hidden gem. Only a very short walk from Dawlish Warren. The hotel has lovely grounds overlooking the sea. The hotel is very well appointed and our bedroom was lovely. For the price we paid, we were very impressed. The room servicing was excellent. Fresh towels each day to replace any used, and toiletries were replaced each day if any had been used. There is a large car park with a very short walk to reception. The coastal walk is accessible directly from the hotel grounds. Dawlish Warren is a ten minute walk away and Dawlish is around a forty minute walk away.
The only slight disappointment was the breakfast experience. There is a very extensive menu choice. Prior to Covid, breakfast appeared to be self service. During our stay it was table service and the wait was too long and the food wasn't hot enough. However, within a few days, service (and food temperature) had improved. It is unfair to say this is a criticism as the staff were very polite and appeared to be trying their hardest in these strange times. The food its self was of a high quality and not mass produced.
Would we go back? You bet we would and hope to return in the autumn.
