I would have loved to have recommended this stay and to be a review on how great our time together was at La Grande Mare but unfortunately I cannot. It was terrible. In fairness to them they did recognise that they had severely let us down and provided us with complimentary drinks and a voucher, which was appreciated. Let me explain..... Upon arrival we were supposed to each receive a complimentary gin. We got to our room to find the gin and no tonic and glasses but the ice had melted in the ice bucket and leaked out onto the table, and then the carpet. I popped down to reception to advise and another bucket of ice was delivered with the tonic. ... another knock at the door a little time later to be told that all the buckets were leaking and was handed a glass of ice instead! We went down to dinner and had another g&t and had a look at the menu. We were told we could pick from the a la carte or special Christmas menu or mix and match. It all looked good. We selected from both but upon placing the order the waiter said we could only pick from one or the other We went for the a la carte. I ordered scallops followed by a lamb shank. My wife the Castel fam egg (no description as to how it would be cooked), followed by chicken Kiev. My scollop arrived and it was raw. This was not explained when ordering. I say scallop as it was one scallop sliced thinly. My wife’s poached egg was cold! £8 for the scallop and £6 for the egg was far too much. I hoped the lamb shank would be better but that was completely inedible, I sent it back. It was grey and sat in a pool of watery tasteless gravy. My wife said I should try a dessert so I went for the pear tatin. That too did not redeem the chef it was very greasy and appeared to have no actual pear. My wife’s main was passable as was the dessert. Turning to the decor the main dining room was decorated for Christmas and was nicely done however the area we were in was cold had no curtain up but did have a string of white lights along the curtain poles. We sat there shivering in the sad side room. When retiring to the bar it was so full of people for their Christmas parties we decided to go to our room. The heating in our room was off so it was not particularly warm the towel rail was broken and as a result the carpet, which was threadbare was still wet under foot. The room was spacious albeit tired and in need of redecoration. The bed was very comfortable and there were plenty of pillows. We had a good nights sleep. The idea of breakfast the next morning filled us with dread but we tried it and we have to say it was very good. We had no issue at all especially as someone had turned on the heating in that side room! When we checked out the receptionist apologised for our experience and as mentioned already waived the drinks bill and provided us with a complimentary voucher as compensation. I think it may take a while before I return. We did appreciate they were busy but that should have been planned for when accepting the bookings. All in all I will not get that that time back so feel somewhat disappointed with the experience.

Been a customer of La Grande Mare for 30+ years but recent stay in the hotel produced worrying signs that some things are beginning to slip. Breakfast was poor in service and quality, we had to ask for our room to be serviced one afternoon (!), there was no 'A la Carte' menu due to Tennerfest and there was an error on our bill when we came to settle the room account - it only comprised the room cost and one evening meal. Suggest new management not quite 'hands on' enough - definite lack of supervision!

Everything was excellent except the morning staff (evening was excellent) and way they treated our issue with blood we spotted on one of our pillows. The lady who was staff was excellent but when she asked a manager to compensate us for more than just the sundries. He was stone-faced and refused to compensate further. The blood was disgusting to see. All that was needed was a friendly and bend-over-backwards approach to accommodate us, and all would have been excellent. Too bad they missed this opportunity, which I spelled out several times. Also, it's far out of the main towns/city. Make sure that's what you're interested in. All the best.

Just been for the Moules fest menu, I had Asian Moules, lemongrass, coriander, lime, ginger, and coconut with red chili the wife had Moules mariniere, white wine, cream, garlic and parsley. Bread and chips. As this is an eat as much as you can menu they asked twice if we wanted topping up but the first serving was ample. The place was full and service was excellent. This was an excellent way to get locals in during the month of September well done.

La Grande Mare was the ideal location for a wedding and a wonderful place to stay for a very enjoyable weekend. Guernsey in the Summer is a wonderful tranquil sunshine Island. My room was magnificent with a breathtaking view. Golfers will be at home here.

Stayed at the Hotel after a family Wedding and the whole occasion was extremely well organised and the staff were most helpful and efficient. Another part of the family stayed in the self catering part of the hotel and absolutely loved it and the close proximity to the swimming pool . I loved my room and the high level of cleanliness but I did notice that all the rooms I saw were rather dated and in need of updating . The rooms themselves were spotlessly clean and comfortable and large and I would certainly recommend them to others . The hotel is just the right size to be personal and friendly and offer a high level of service . Due to the large number of wedding guests checking in for the night I was unfortunately not able to have my room till after the check in time of 4.00pm and this is the only reason I have not awarded 5 stars . The perfect venue for a Wedding and the perfect backdrop for memorable photos. I look forward to popping in for lunch very soon !

Hotel very clean and welcoming. Room excellent as always. Staff helpful and pleasant, nothing too much trouble. Food in restaurant excellent. Service in restaurant perfect. Unfortunately one member of our family became ill towards the end of the holiday but nothing was too much trouble to call the emergency doctor out and arrange for us to take a little longer to book out of the hotel the next day. I am that person that was ill and I have sent a personal letter to the manager thanking her for all the help I and my family received from certain members of staff that night. Nothing was too much trouble. Thank you.

We have stayed here for over 14 years.First impressions on arrival -scruffy. Ruts in gravel driveway, paintwork needed redoing and main kitchen extractor losing its cladding. We had to wait to get into the Apartment as website wasn’t up to date advising changed entrance times from 3pm to 4pm- subsequently Website brought up to date . Entrance to self catering apartment , paintwork ‘peeling’, rubbish piled up outside lobby- lid on food bin was missing. Seagull mess and cobwebs around lobby entrance door. Also on our first day we encountered 8 problems with cleanliness of appliances and curtains , loose toilet seat ,a bathroom light not working, damp on lounge wall and toaster inadequate and dangerous in that you had to manually push sliced bread into a live appliance. Most of these issues when brought to the attention of the reception staff were promptly sorted although we had to chase the return of bedroom curtains which had been taken away to wash. Unfortunately the rubbish was never cleared adequately throughout our stay & reflected badly on this area of the complex, as did the grass not being cut for 2 weeks. Subsequently we found the food extractor system allowed cooking smells from the flat below to be sucked up into our apartment. We were told this would receive attention in future refurbishments. Food in the ‘Golf club bar’ was acceptable but there were empty sauce bottles & cloudy old/stale vinegar. It is a shame guests are no longer advised of large functions & how this might impact on use of the facilities such as being able to use the main dining room or outdoor pool Positives: Staff very smart in their new ‘Corporate’ attire, friendly and helpful- Reception staff exceptionally so. Golf course looks immaculate.Unrivalled position on Vazon Bay with excellent parking facilities. La Grande Mare had been looking tired over a number of years and despite all the negative comments this is still our go to place on the Island and we hope that after a bedding in year by the new ownership, La Grande Mare regains it’s rightful place as a premier hotel on the Island. We plan to be back there in 2020 for 4 weeks when we expect the basics at the very least to have been permanently sorted. It should be noted that staffing issues do affect the whole Island’s hospitality offering. We met the General Manager on our last day & she seems aware of the challenges ahead and apparently knew of our disappointment at the issues we encountered.

We had a business trip to Guernsey and our client recommended this property. Arrival is a bit confusing and figuring out where to park and find the entrance. The room was very large and clean but very dated decor. No AC and difficult to sleep with the record heat wave. More geared to tourists and golfers than business travelers. Breakfast the next morning was good - pleasant to sit outside on the patio by the pool and service was good.
