I have just noticed a negative review about Peter and the staff at this hotel which I have to say is a load of nonsense. We stayed for two nights with our two young children and were made to feel very welcome. I had left my wallet in reception by mistake and another guest had handed it in when I phoned up from Westport in a panic asking if a wallet had been found he offered to get delivered to me which is a 30 minute drive away which was extremely decent of him. Fair enough the hotel is a bit dated but the room was warm and comfy and breakfast was more than good enough. Also the bar area was great and they welcomed a gang of hyper children running around wild. Also Peter's son who is training to be a teacher gave us a great tutorial about achill and the bog over a few beers.

Stayed here at the weekend. Arrived wet and tired with my 5 friends (all male) after doing the Greenway cycle, horrible day for it. We were met with judgement which was not nice. We were spoken to as if we were children. Peter, the owner, really seemed like he'd prefer we had not been there. We found him nosey and patronising. I assume he was concerned that we were going to go mad or something! I mean, come on, we were in our mid 30's to early 40's! Peter was wondering how long we'd be out for that night and told us "no parties in the rooms" about 4 to 5 times. We were not made feel welcome at all. The next morning he was in great form and could not do enough for us, glad to see the back of us I guess or felt bad for being so judgmental. We also ate in the bar. My cod

Stayed here after doing the Westport to Achill Greenway cycle. Peter and his family could not have been more welcoming & we were happy with our decision. We had the steak dinner here which was brilliant value, the breakfast the next morning more than set us up for the cycle home & we had a lovely night in the bar too. Great place to have as a base to explore this lovely region of Ireland. The price was more than affordable. The rooms are not plush, if thats what you are looking for, but are more than comfortable and with brick walls between rooms at least you have lots of privacy. Would highly recommend it.

Dropped by for lunch with an elderly relative after a long drive. It felt a bit cold and dead at first but the owner (Peter) showed us to the lounge where there was a fire (it was chilly despite being June) and took our orders promptly. Menu is traditional with seafood well represented, including a very well priced local seafood platter. Three of us had soup, various sandwiches, garlic mushrooms. Guinness and tea - trad food in a trad setting. Everything was fresh (the ham was particularly good), served in generous portions and simply presented. Bill was just over 30 euros, which seemed fair considering we'd eaten well. If it's simple old-style hospitality and a well served glass of porter you're after, served by friendly staff who make time for a bit of a chat, then you won't

Seen some good reviews on this which is a massive surprise to the experience we got. There was 15 of us that stopped off here for something to eat. We all were in the lounge waiting for someone to appear to take our order at least. As waiting we were all hungry and getting quite frustrated so I went to look for someone to find no one. Then a waitress walked right past all of us and said nothing and headed straight in to the bar so I got up and started ringing the bell. For her to arrive back out and was like ''Hello'' as if we were just sitting in there for nothing. I felt kind of awkward and said do you's do food? and got a blunt reply ''Yes''. I replied well were ready to order but could we have 3 jugs of orange first please. So she had walked back into the bar and we waited

We stayed here for two nights. The room was small and outdated, (double bed up against the wall), but it was warm, clean and a very comfortable bed, the en suite could seriously do with up dating, I have to say, the hot shower was very nice. The room looked out on a dirty run down building yard, and it was noisy…sounded like a cooking fan going, up until late. Breakfast was just ok, the bacon was very much overcooked, the 1st morning my partner asked for NO black or white pudding, he got white pudding. I asked for full Irish…I got NO sausages. The 2nd morning my partner asked for no pudding again and asked if he could have 2 eggs instead, he got no puddings but still only got only one egg. It was served in a big, cold, outdated ballroom. We had dinner on the 1st evening; it was

Three adults and 9 children fed and watered with no fuss, decent simple food and friendly service. The establishment itself is slightly dated but neat, clean and well kept. Food was of the soup and sandwich variety and pretty good at that. The chap behind the bar, a gentleman by the name of Peader could not have been more helpful or chatty or more welcoming. I wish his establishment every success.

Great views, comfortable rooms and wholesome food. Peter is a welcoming and amusing host and I had no complaints. The room was clean and it's a great location for walking or cycling on the Greenway. Definitely recommended.

My daughter and I found the room comfortable, but the smokers tended to congregate just below, and the smoke rose through the open window, which is not good for my asthma. It might be nady to situate the smoking area away from close to rooms on the first floor. The road passes by for the bridge, which can be noisy; but the service was friendly and the rooms good value. I would add a half mark for GOOD. if there were one.

We popped in for a bite to eat after returning to Achill following a day on the bikes doing the Achill to Newport section of the Great Western Greenway. It was early evening and myself, the wife and three young and very tired children just wanted a good meal and somewhere to relax and feel comfortable for an hour or two. This was our second visit to the Achill Sound Hotel in the last year and Peter was again on hand to take care of everything. Friendly and chatty as before, he made sure the children were welcomed and looked after with colouring books etc.. Food was fabulous (in particular the seafood chowder), served efficiently, with a smile and was good value too. A few friendly locals at the bar also gave you a feeling of being welcome and to basically make yourself at
