Welcome to the Achill Sound Hotel, or in the Irish language, Ostan Gob A'Choire. Peter and Loretta Connaughton, and all of the Connaughton family, assure you a famous warm welcome to the friendly and relaxed Achill Sound Hotel. The hotel is located just over the bridge from the mainland, and in the heart of Achill Sound, the main Achill village. Close to the village shops and amenities, the Achill Sound Hotel is one of the most popular hotels on Achill Island. For nearly a century we've been offering affordable accommodation, great home-cooked food from our bar/restaurant and the ideal location for exploring Achill and the surrounding areas. We are a family hotel and add a personal touch to brighten your stay from all the family and staff. Enjoy a pint in the bar, share a song or a story and feel part of the family and the village. We have a range of double, single, twin and family rooms to choose from. All rooms have TVs, and are en-suite. From here in Achill Sound you can also explore the rest of the beautiful island with its stunning Atlantic vistas, towering mountains, cliffs, unique plants and animals, intriguing and sad history, cosy pubs, safe and scenic bicycle greenway all the way from Westport, and perfect blue-flag beaches. At once windswept, barren, wild, lush, rich and beautiful. An adventure seekers dream, or a quiet Irish paradise to escape the busy world. Come visit Achill. The hotel has plenty of safe and free parking as well as storage for bicycles and packed lunches for exploring the island.

My wife and I stayed for 3 nights during the summer and overall we would say that this hotel reflects the attitude of Achill Tourism as a whole. Achill is a beautiful place to visit but those in the tourism industry have never heard of going the extra mile. Unanimously they whine that their season is short and therefore investment is not worthwhile,. If only they had vision they would find that their season would stretch all year round.

This hotel has seen no investment in what seems like 20 years. It is spotlessly clean but has a very tired appearance. The restaurant was busy each night but the fare was totally uninspiring. A lot of bought in pre-prepared meals, mainly deep fried. Top prices also. Breakfast was adequate and served in a mostly empty ballroom. Our room once again was clean but the shower-head was broken. This is just not acceptable.

The owner was very visibly in control. Dare I say micro-managing. The bar had a total lack of atmosphere and pumps that were not in use. There is absolutely no entertainment in the hotel much to our utter disappointment,

I will be back when the hotel undergoes an upgrade but until then I will be staying elsewhere on my next visit to beautiful Achill. A bit of entertainment might even get me to change my mind.

A final annoyance was the lack of wifi at the hotel. It is only available infrequently in a small area of the reception area and the owner gave me every crappy explanation as to why it was so bad. Naturally it was not his fault

Stayed here after doing the Westport to Achill Greenway cycle. Peter and his family could not have been more welcoming & we were happy with our decision.

We had the steak dinner here which was brilliant value, the breakfast the next morning more than set us up for the cycle home & we had a lovely night in the bar too.

Great place to have as a base to explore this lovely region of Ireland. The price was more than affordable. The rooms are not plush, if thats what you are looking for, but are more than comfortable and with brick walls between rooms at least you have lots of privacy.

Would highly recommend it.

We stayed here for two nights . The ensuite to the room could do with up dating. The room looked out on a dirty run down building with open silage bales spilled around the yard Wouldn't stay here again reception was frostly, got the feeling the owners were very religious a few religious pieces in the hotel. Been a single parent with children would have been fronded upon or they didn't like outsiders. Could be here all nite if I was to guess. The bar was empty on a Saturday nite.. We went down to Joise mcloughlins pub and it was packed . Arrived back to the hotel at 23.00, and the doors were locked. We knocked on the door and was let in. Felt like I had done something wrong, it was like sneaking back home without the parents noticing drink on my breath. Breakfast was just ok, if you call dripping in grease nice!! Checking out I paid. No thank you nothing nice to say. Kids sat in reception until I got the rest of the bags. When I returned there was no one to be seen in reception, no thanks once they got their money they were no where to be seen. Very disappointing!!

Stayed here for 4 days, the breakfast and meals where very poor, hotel cold and very basic. The hotel is very tired which would nt have mattered if it had been warm. I will not stay here again. The couple owning the hotel are very nice.

We ended up eating in alices bar and the beehive.

Can't recommend this place enough. We were staying in Achill and could not find anywhere open for dinner (,2nd WK September). We landed here and on first sight were not confident. Walked in and we were warmly greeted by the owner lady. We had a drink and ordered fish and chips and a baby bowl which arrived quickly.

The male owner arrived and also warmly greeted us and stopped for a chat. The fish came out and it was beautiful. So moist and fresh. The prices were also very reasonable. Would recommend this place to anyone in the area, we will for sure be calling here again.

Food good
Had a separate menu for people with allergies - excellent
Heard us mention it was my mums birthday - 2 big slices chocolate fudge cake with candles provided free of charge
Tea and coffee - no charge as well

We stayed here for one night in May 2016. If your looking for a modern hotel then this most definitely isn't for you. The rooms are like stepping back in time to the seventies, cramped, a bit dingy and a tiny bathroom. A positive is that they are clean and have everything you need.

The hotel is family run and it shows in their friendliness. We ate in the bar and couldn't fault the food. Overall this is a nice hotel, lovely people running it and has an old Irish feel

Dropped by for lunch with an elderly relative after a long drive. It felt a bit cold and dead at first but the owner (Peter) showed us to the lounge where there was a fire (it was chilly despite being June) and took our orders promptly. Menu is traditional with seafood well represented, including a very well priced local seafood platter. Three of us had soup, various sandwiches, garlic mushrooms. Guinness and tea - trad food in a trad setting. Everything was fresh (the ham was particularly good), served in generous portions and simply presented. Bill was just over 30 euros, which seemed fair considering we'd eaten well.
If it's simple old-style hospitality and a well served glass of porter you're after, served by friendly staff who make time for a bit of a chat, then you won't go wrong at this modest but satisfying establishment.

Great views, comfortable rooms and wholesome food. Peter is a welcoming and amusing host and I had no complaints. The room was clean and it's a great location for walking or cycling on the Greenway. Definitely recommended.
