Welcome to the Achill Sound Hotel, or in the Irish language, Ostan Gob A'Choire. Peter and Loretta Connaughton, and all of the Connaughton family, assure you a famous warm welcome to the friendly and relaxed Achill Sound Hotel. The hotel is located just over the bridge from the mainland, and in the heart of Achill Sound, the main Achill village. Close to the village shops and amenities, the Achill Sound Hotel is one of the most popular hotels on Achill Island. For nearly a century we've been offering affordable accommodation, great home-cooked food from our bar/restaurant and the ideal location for exploring Achill and the surrounding areas. We are a family hotel and add a personal touch to brighten your stay from all the family and staff. Enjoy a pint in the bar, share a song or a story and feel part of the family and the village. We have a range of double, single, twin and family rooms to choose from. All rooms have TVs, and are en-suite. From here in Achill Sound you can also explore the rest of the beautiful island with its stunning Atlantic vistas, towering mountains, cliffs, unique plants and animals, intriguing and sad history, cosy pubs, safe and scenic bicycle greenway all the way from Westport, and perfect blue-flag beaches. At once windswept, barren, wild, lush, rich and beautiful. An adventure seekers dream, or a quiet Irish paradise to escape the busy world. Come visit Achill. The hotel has plenty of safe and free parking as well as storage for bicycles and packed lunches for exploring the island.

Small family hotel.

Owner would talk for Ireland whether you want to hear hm or not.

A lot of negative signs in toilets. Buy something if you are not a resident. “We are a small family hotel & help us pay our bills etc.

Toilet Report: Very dated and terrible signage
Pricing: fair
Recomendations to Owner: stop annoying customers.
Recomendations to Chef:

Had lunch here today and the food was absolutely gorgeous, very reasonably priced. Staff very friendly and couldn't do enough for us. I would highly recommend a visit to the Achill Sound Hotel for a bite to eat if your passing through Achill.

We popped in for lunch along the greenway cycle - 1st week after covid re-openings.
Lovey soup and a toastie.. the owner was a lovely friendly man!
Very old school Irish hotel - took me back to my childhood..
Nearly wanted to order red lemonade and a packet of Taytos..
Would recommend for the genuine warm welcome! Lunch was good too..

Shocking to see the manager wear his visor up on his forhead as he came to take the order. Only one waitress wearing a mask complete lack of customer protection. Food average. I can only say I will never return

Great location for visiting Achill Island. Very good value for money. We had dinner which was very good and it was very busy on the night. Beautiful food both dinner and breakfast, friendly staff. Would highly recommend.

Stayed here at the weekend. Arrived wet and tired with my 5 friends (all male) after doing the Greenway cycle, horrible day for it.

We were met with judgement which was not nice. We were spoken to as if we were children. Peter, the owner, really seemed like he'd prefer we had not been there. We found him nosey and patronising.

I assume he was concerned that we were going to go mad or something! I mean, come on, we were in our mid 30's to early 40's! Peter was wondering how long we'd be out for that night and told us "no parties in the rooms" about 4 to 5 times.

We were not made feel welcome at all. The next morning he was in great form and could not do enough for us, glad to see the back of us I guess or felt bad for being so judgmental.

We also ate in the bar. My cod was nice, fresh but the vegetables were far from fresh. Some of the guys had the lamb and thought that it was very middle of the road. The young waiter was quiet sarcastic - not impressed at all.

The rooms were quiet old with a smell in one and damp sheets in mine.

We certainly did not expect 5 star accommodation but a friendly welcome and being made feel welcome costs nothing.

This family run hotel needs updating and a younger, fresher approach. It needs to be dragged into at least the 20th century.

Seen some good reviews on this which is a massive surprise to the experience we got. There was 15 of us that stopped off here for something to eat. We all were in the lounge waiting for someone to appear to take our order at least. As waiting we were all hungry and getting quite frustrated so I went to look for someone to find no one. Then a waitress walked right past all of us and said nothing and headed straight in to the bar so I got up and started ringing the bell. For her to arrive back out and was like ''Hello'' as if we were just sitting in there for nothing. I felt kind of awkward and said do you's do food? and got a blunt reply ''Yes''. I replied well were ready to order but could we have 3 jugs of orange first please.
So she had walked back into the bar and we waited 10 minutes and still no jug or no sight of the waitress, but there is a window that you can see into the bar and we could see her over at other peoples tables.
We all decided to leave! it was beyond a joke.
I didn't see any other staff but like all she had to say is that the foods finished or something. We would of sat there all day waiting and getting nothing.
Can't imagine how long it would take the food to come out. So I am glad we left.
We all just felt like they didn't want a consume.

going on the previous comments about the friendly owner, I can only assume I got him on a bad day. It really left a bad taste. A group of 5 of us went in there to have a drink/bite to eat and there was no sign of anyone to serve us. I went to the bathroom while the others waited for service. Bathroom was smelly and according to the cleaning sheet, it hadn't been cleaned that day yet (it was about lunchtime). When I emerged, my friends had gone! Turns out they got fed up waiting and the place was a bit grubby anyway so they weren't sure about eating/drinking there. What happened next was shocking. As I was leaving, the owner guy appeared and was really sarcastic - sneering "thanks for your custom" etc. It really bothered me so I went back in and said "that's not nice". The childish sarcasm continued (I think he mimiced me or something). He even followed me out the door and continued bad-mouthing. I have to admit I then used bad language back to him which I now regret because that's not very good of me (so I apologise if you're reading this). Look, I understand it's frustrating when someone comes in and then leaves your premises. Maybe he thought we just came in to use the bathroom (although the 5 of us wouldn't come in for just 1 to use the bathroom - so if that's what he thought then he was wrong and ill-advised to react that way anyway). We intended to give our custom but the joint wasn't up to standard, nor was the service - so we left. That was our experience - others may have a different (and better) experience and good luck to them. That's life. However, because of the chip-on-the-shoulder, world-owes-me-a-living, disrespectful and arrogant attitude (that thankfully is disappearing in Irish tourism), I will never return.

Stayed here 2 nights. Rooms in very bad need of updating. Very small basic rooms & ensuite with dampness patches that were painted over & musty smell. Teeny Tiny TV with one fuzzy channel. Good location, suitable for exploring the island. Asked million questions on where we were going & what time we would be back at. One of the owners was always around & would just appear, the minute we came out our room in the morning one of them would be there asking if we were going for breakfast & if we came back in the evenings, one of them would follow us to our room asking us if we were going to be having something to eat & drink downstairs in the bar. They also insisted on leaving our keys at the desk every time we went out & wanted to know what time we would be back at, at night. It was like living at home. We found it very odd behavior to be honest.

Excellent location, good food, nice people serving (is a family place) and ambience. Just passing the bridge you'll find the hotel, is a perfect place to explore the island. You can stay there or stop for food or a drink. With a car park in front of the premises. I highly recommend this place, you'll feel there among friends, better than home!
