Stayed here on Saturday June 9th. Fabulous place, situated right at the Meeting of the Waters. Beautiful room & the best breakfast menu...with home made jams & relishes!Couldn't fault it, Triona & Shane were so welcoming too. Go there, you won't be disappointed!! Trish Fallon 😎😎😎

We were welcomed when we arrived with coffee and cake, then the next day when we returned after a day's outing, we were once again given warm hospitality with the owner even leaving his lawn mowing for us. The house was spotless. Breakfast was also generous with juice, yoghurt, cereals, toast and an individually cooked omelet. We take home many warm memories of Ireland, mainly because of people such as Shane and Catriona.

Shane and Catriona were the sweetest hosts we've ever had, constantly going out of their way to make our one night stay pleasant and personal. They made multiple trips to the bus stop to pick us up (since we got on the wrong bus and failed to be there at the original time planned!). We were showed to our room upon arrival, with a lovely view of the river in the backyard, then left to unpack while Catriona set out coffee/cookies downstairs. She gave us a great run-through of the attractions nearby, and since we were leaving in the morning, her suggestions for our limited amount of time. Shane was on his way through Glendalough that afternoon, so he gave us a ride to the beautiful Glendalough National Park in the Wicklow Mountains (which I loved!), about half an hour away, saving us the cost of a taxi. He picked us up on the way back through a few hours later. That night, when I realized I left my ipod at the restaurant there, they insisted on driving back (an hour round trip) to pick it up for me, rather than me calling a taxi!

Aside from the amazing full irish breakfast, comfy beds, and spotless rooms, the best part about the ashton house was easily its owners! They worked very hard and went out of their way multiple times to ensure we had a wonderful stay, and made the most of our short amount of time in their town. Please check them out!

Found this B&B by chance on the road from Glendalough to Avoca Handweavers, rates posted by roadside appeared attractive, but in truth you get what you pay for. We drove in and there was no one at home and then we saw the neighbour coming racing down the drive and she said she would show us in. The house felt cold but we were assured that the heating would be on later. We decided to stay and we headed to the Avoca Handweavers which we then discovered is a further 3 to 4 miles, we visited the handweavers and had dinner and returned and the house was empty and cold the heating had not been turned on, we searched for the owner and realised we were in the house with only our 2 friends for company, we thought about leaving but our american friends were concerned about the consequences, we decided to walk to the pub nearby but abandoned that idea when we got as far as the entrance and realised it was a fair distance alone a road with no pavement and it was very dark, so we retired to the cold & lonly B&B. Breakfast next morning was served by the owner who told us she was working the previous evening and said the heating had been on, but our radiator never
got hot, breakfast was the average Irish Fry. When checking out I said I had been unable to sleep it was so cold and she replied that she would never leave the heating on all night, I said it had not been on at all and this is the reason it was so cold. We paid for the rooms which whilst appearing cheap, they were not and it was poor value for the evening spent in a lonely unoccupied B&B that was so cold we could not sleep. This B&B does not accept Credit Cards. If you want warmth & ambience with a nice friendly welcome and be made feel at home this B&B is not for you. Cheap but lacked Cheer

Response from ashtonhouse, Owner at Ashton House
Responded 23 Feb 2011
We were very surprised to learn of your complaint so long after your stay with us. This is the first complaint we have received as all our reviews have been excellent. An arrival to Ashton house all guests receive a warm welcome and complimentary tea/coffee in our guest lounge. We also offer an extensive breakfast from the traditional Irish breakfast to a vast selection of cheese, cold meats, salami, yogurts, fruit and home made brown bread. Ashton House is a period house in the Vale of Avoca, it has been completely renovated to a modern luxury bed and breakfast and all rooms are decorated to the highest standard. All rooms are new and meticulously clean. Regarding heating it is class A standard and the house is always warm, I find most guests leave their windows open and ask me to turn the heating off. All rooms have a guest information pack with my phone number available 24 hours a day. Ashton House is set in a beautiful location backing on to the Avonmor River, directly beside the Meeting of the Waters and pub (3 minute walk) which is the second most visited tourist site in Co Wicklow. Regarding the footpath to the Meetings there is a 5 meter wide grass path with street lighting. We are a 4 minute drive to Avoca village and Avoca Hand Weavers. Ashton house is an owner occupied bed and breakfast so there is always someone available to deal with guest queries or to give advice and information. If you were so disappointed and had made a genuine complaint at the time to me in person I would not have charged you for your stay as we like all our guests to leave Ashton house with happy memories.

Our stay was in complete contrast to the other reviews. We arrived and checked in, we were shown to our room which was a double room but very small with only one bedside locker & no chair or dressing table, it was only for one night, because we were hiking in the area with a group, so we were happy enough. We were offered Tea or Coffee which we declined. However it all went dowhill after that, we noticed horse drawn caravans arrive and unyoke and let the horses off into the rear of the house, the people with the horses also walk around the gardens and our bathroom window did not have obscure glass so our privacy was seriously impinged, at least 5 of these caravans had arrived within an hour of our check in and they all had access to the rear of the house and let the horses into the river where some did their toilet, the horses also left heaps of dung in the lawns which made walking almost impossible as you had to pick your steps through the horse dung, at least one of the caravans had a dog and it too used the lawn for a toilet and it was obvious that other dogs were also allowed use the lawn for toileting, it was horrible. As we returned from Dinner, we noticed 2 tents had also been pitched in the garden close to the caravans and some of them had fires lighting, when we went to our bedroom we had to close the window because of the smell of smoke from the camp fire, anyway the room felt cold even though it was a nice evening out, but worst was to come and the "other residents" on the lawn started to have a sing song and play a guitar that continued until after 1am, they were very boisterous and loud and it was obvious some drink had been consumed, the dog barked most of the night. At approx 6.30 the racket started again with the men calling the horses and rattling buckets, children were also running around and in the river. When we took breakfast we menioned it to the owner Shane , but he was not in the least concerned, saying that other guests to the house love the horses, the caravans use this area of their lawn every summer he told us, as they travel around Wicklow, but we did not sleep because of the noise and 2 other guests also had the same problem. The other 2 guests we spoke to at breakfast said they were concerned by the loud shouting and noise, sometimes agruing. Breakfast was good but no compensation for the poor nights sleep and the invasion of privacy by the people from the caravans wandering around and some even had access to the guesthouse.. We would not stay again nor could we recommend to anyone wanting a peaceful stay or restful nights sleep , we would not have reserved to stay had we been aware that they also allow caravans & tents in the garden area, it should either a caravan/camping park or a guesthouse but you cannot be both, one does not compliment the other. Avoid if you want a good nights sleep.

I booked the hotel for one night 5 months ago, only to be contacted by the hotel 4 days in advance that they do not allow dogs. The third party website stated it was dog friendly and once booked I sent a note to that effect 5 months ago. Being stranded in Ireland with a dog and no where to stay was not pleasant.

We stayed here three nights and had a fabulous time. It is in a quiet location near the river and close to the local pub. It's ideal for exploring the surrounding area. Katrina and Shane are perfect hosts. The rooms are well appointed and comfortable. Great breakfast and homemade Jams and cakes!! They even had a spare set of crutches when my wife sprained her ankle on the way to the pub!!

We absolutely loved staying here and we will definitely come again. We felt so welcome and right at home. The place was spotless and the cakes, tea and coffee offered upon arrival was very much appreciated.....especially after a long day of travel. The rooms were cleaned daily and the breakfast was probably the freshest we’d had in our two week tour of Ireland. The owners did some washing for us and gave us lots of information about the highlights of the area. They also provided us with a packed lunch as we left very early on the last morning to fly back home. There were other guests who were travelling with donkeys so we had a few laughs with the backyard visitors. This place is very convenient for those wanting to check out Wicklow National Park and the surrounding areas.

I honestly wanted to give a five star rating. Two small reasons why I didn’t .....
1) the internet didn’t work at all the night before we left so I couldn’t make contact back home 2) the owners only take cash (we thought because we had booked via booking.com and provided CC details via that website that our payment was sorted). After a day of being out all day we had to go out again and find an ATM as we were leaving for the airport early in the morning. It was a bit inconvenient and disappointing. It might have been in the small print on the booking but when the website asks for card details you can understand the confusion.

The house is excellent as well as the host. The breakfast is incredible! Always done for you! the nature sorroundings are astonishing.
The only "cons" is that there's nothing but a pub at walking distance. If you want to have dinner in a restaurant, you need to take your car.

Katrina and Shane have a fine little B&B only steps from the Meeting of the Waters. Upon arrival you are greeted with tea and pastries, before being escorted to your room. Breakfast is cooked to order, and comes with jams made by the owners' family.
